  • Patent number: 8199281
Abstract: In a backlight of a liquid crystal display device, the screen of a liquid crystal panel is divided into a plurality of rectangular regions, an edge-light type light guide plate is provided corresponding to each of the rectangular regions, and a plurality of LEDs are provided on the end face of each edge-light type light guide plate. The brightness of the image displayed on each of the rectangular regions is obtained based on an image signal, and, based on the brightness, the brightness of the plurality of LEDs corresponding to each of the rectangular regions is controlled. Accordingly, the power consumption can be reduced as compared with the case where the entire liquid crystal panel is illuminated with uniform brightness. Furthermore, the edge-light type light guide plate is used to allow a decrease in number of the LEDs and the wiring arrangements.

  • Patent number: 8195694
Abstract: A mechanism is disclosed for resolving conflicts between actions that target elements of a hierarchical data structure. Actions that are associated with criteria that are satisfied by an element of a target data structure are selected from among a plurality of specified actions. The selected actions are sorted by action type. Actions that conflict with a first-ordered action are determined. If the priority of the first-ordered action is the highest of the priorities of the conflicting actions, then the first-ordered action is performed and the other conflicting actions are canceled such that they are not performed relative to the element. Otherwise, the first-ordered action is canceled and processing continues with the next-ordered element. This conflict resolution technique may be applied to each of the remaining sorted actions in order, and for each element in the target data structure.

  • Patent number: 8195219
Abstract: A user apparatus for use in a mobile communication system includes a reception unit configured to receive a signal transmitted from a base station and obtain a parameter for determining evaluation criteria on cell reselection; a counting unit configured to count a number of cell reselections; and a measurement unit configured to measure a Doppler frequency indicative of a mobility of the user apparatus. The evaluation criteria on cell reselection are that reception signal strength of a signal transmitted from a target base station has been higher than or equal to reception signal strength of a signal transmitted from a source base station by greater than or equal to a hysteresis threshold for longer than or equal to a time to trigger. It is determined whether the evaluation criteria on cell reselection are modified and used depending on whether both first and second conditions are satisfied.

  • Patent number: 8196142
Abstract: A method, apparatus, and system are directed toward managing a system that includes a cluster and an external resource. The external resource may be part of a second cluster that is collocated on the same hardware platforms as the cluster. A proxy resource is used to enforce a dependency relationship between a native resource of the cluster and an external resource, such that a dependency with the proxy resource serves to enforce a dependency with the external resource. The cluster framework may maintain states of the proxy resource, including an offline state, an online-standby state, and an online state. The online-standby indicates that the proxy has been started, but it has not determined that the associated external resource is enabled. The proxy may determine whether the external resource is enabled or disabled and, in response, notify the cluster framework.

  • Patent number: 8187443
Abstract: A cell separating apparatus that can easily separate target cells contained in a fluid is provided. Target cells and a fluid are injected through a storage hole, and ejected to the outside of a rotation disk under the influence of a centrifugal force of the rotation disk. An electric field is applied to the outside of the rotation disk, and the target cells are gathered at a different position from the fluid due to di-electrophoresis. In addition, pivot arms placed at an outer surface of the rotation disk are open, and the open pivot arms collect the target cells. The collected target cell flow in a different storage portion through a fluid flow path. As a result, the target cells can be easily separated.
