  • Patent number: 7010656
Abstract: In some embodiments, an electronic device includes a processor, a physical memory coupled to the processor, and a storage medium coupled to the processor. The storage medium may store instructions which when executed by the processor cause the processor to: survey at least a portion of the physical memory, determine an amount of free memory space and used memory space based on the survey of the physical memory, determine if a consolidation of used memory space should be performed, and, if so determined, consolidate the used memory space, and reduce the power provided to at least a portion of the physical memory following the consolidation of used memory space. Other embodiments are disclosed and claimed.

  • Patent number: 7000077
Abstract: A system including a data requester and a storage system. The storage system determines which prefetch data to include with demand data, without the data requester specifying the prefetch data, and provides information enabling the data requestor to discern the demand data from the prefetch data. The data requestor can be a disk drive driver which copies the demand data in fulfilling an operating system request, and then caches the prefetch data. The storage system can be a disk drive.

  • Patent number: 6952429
Abstract: A method of and apparatus for communicating data using a hub. The method includes determining a first estimated unused capacity left in a first frame in which a second transaction is to be performed between a hub and an agent. The method then includes determining an amount of a first data that can fit into the estimated unused capacity and that is to be sent to the hub during a first transaction and then sent by the hub to the agent during the second transaction. The method also includes sending the first data to the hub during the first transaction.

  • Patent number: 6870762
Abstract: An apparatus includes a low magnetic-coercivity layer of material (LMC layer) having a majority electron-spin-polarization (M-ESP), an energy-gap coupled with the LMC layer, wherein a flow of spin-polarized electrons having an electron-spin-polarization anti-parallel to the LMC layer are injected via the energy-gap, to change the M-ESP of the LMC layer. A non-magnetic material is in electrical communication with the LMC layer and provides a spin-balanced source of current to the LMC layer, responsive to the injection of spin-polarized electrons into the LMC layer.

  • Patent number: 6842840
Abstract: A system for determining whether a memory is connected to a controller in a node of a data network. In order to utilize non-volatile memory elsewhere in the system, it is possible to eliminate the EEPROM which is normally connected to the controller. In order to indicate that the EEPROM is deliberately missing, a pull-up resistor connected to a voltage source is connected to the chip select signal line which normally runs between the controller and the EEPROM. If a high signal is received, the controller knows that the EEPROM is deliberately missing and that non-volatile memory will be provided elsewhere in the system.
