Abstract: An electronic shelf label system which sends messages to electronic shelf labels based upon priority. The system includes an electronic shelf label, and a computer for assigning a priority to an unsent message to the electronic shelf label, for comparing the priority to other priorities of other messages which are unsent, and for sending the message if the priority is higher than the other priorities. The computer may also determine message priorities of types of messages.

Abstract: A system and method of verifying item placement on a security scale. The system includes a computer for receiving incremental weight signals from a security weight scale, wherein some of the incremental weight signals are unrelated to placement of items on the security weight scale, and an item detector for detecting movement of the item from a scanner following scanning of the item and for generating an item detection signal, wherein the computer ignores the incremental weight signal unless it receives the item detection signal within a predetermined time period preceding receipt of the incremental weight signal.
Abstract: A system for notifying an operator of a result of attempting to read a number of product labels on an item which produces only a single good read indication or bad read indication. The system includes a good read indicator, a bad read indicator, and control circuitry for notifying an operator of a result of attempting to read a number of product labels, including at least one of a barcode label and a radio frequency identification label on an item. The control circuitry activates a bad read indicator to indicate a single bad read indication if the control circuitry fails to receive item identification information from at least one of the barcode label and the radio frequency identification label, and activates a good read indicator to indicate a single good read indication if the control circuitry receives item identification information from at least one of the barcode label and the radio frequency identification label.
Abstract: An optical scanner having a balanced mirrored spinner. The optical scanner includes a laser for producing a laser beam, a mirrored spinner for directing the laser beam to produce scanning light beams, and an apparatus for rotating the mirrored spinner including a motor having a shaft which rotates about a first axis of rotation, a spinner mount coupled to the shaft and having an axle coupled to the mirrored spinner for rotating the mirrored spinner about a second axis of rotation, a drive mechanism for rotating the mirrored spinner about the axle, and a balance for counteracting precession of the mirrored spinner as it rotates.
Abstract: An RFID weight-based security method with container compensation which compares total weights. The security method includes receiving item identification information from RFID labels affixed to items in a container, obtaining a reference container weight, obtaining reference item weights using the item identification information, obtaining a combined weight of the items and the container from a scale, comparing the combined weight with the sum of the reference container weight and the reference item weights, and processing payment for the items if the combined weight is within a predetermined threshold of the sum of the reference container weight and the reference item weights.
Abstract: A system and method of completing a transaction involving goods tagged with radio frequency identification (RFID) labels which uses a portal to read the RFID labels. The system includes a computer for obtaining label information read from radio frequency identification labels on products selected for purchase by a customer by a plurality of radio frequency identification label readers in a portal, for storing the label information with an identifier associating the customer with the label information in a transaction record, and for providing the label information to a transaction terminal so that the transaction terminal can determine prices associated with the products and process customer payment for the products.
Abstract: An electronic shelf label with a modulated backscatter communication system which can actively transmit signals. The electronic shelf label includes a modulated backscatter receiver for receiving a first modulated radio frequency (RF) carrier signal, and a transmitter powered by the first modulated RF carrier signal for transmitting a second modulated RF carrier signal.

Abstract: A method of limiting access to network sites for a network kiosk which controls public operation of the kiosk. The method includes the steps of receiving a request to display the web page by the kiosk, determining an address of the web page, determining a current time, determining an unacceptable period of access to the web page, and preventing access to the web page if current time falls within the unacceptable period.

Abstract: Barcode scanner including a multitasking pattern mirror which allows the size of a scanner to be reduced without decreasing performance. The bar code scanner includes a laser for producing a laser beam, a mirrored spinner for reflecting the laser beam, and a plurality of pattern mirrors for directing the laser beam from the mirrored spinner to produce a scan pattern. The multitasking pattern mirror additionally directs the laser beam from the laser to the mirrored spinner.
Abstract: A shopping system and method which reduces resources necessary for completing transactions. The shopping system includes an item recording computer for recording item identification information associated with an item selected for purchase by a shopper in a store, for recording identifying information about the shopper from an RFID identifier carried by the shopper, and for storing the item identification information in a data file associated with the identifying information of the shopper.
Abstract: A method of identifying items for checkout that improves checkout speed. The method includes obtaining first item identification information from RFID labels on grouped first items, obtaining second item identification information from bar code labels on ungrouped second items, determining prices of the first and second items from the first and second item identification information, and processing payment for the first and second items.
Abstract: A method of printing information by a network kiosk which prints web page information, designed for printing on standard width paper, on narrower receipt paper. The method includes the steps of receiving a command to print information in a displayed web page, obtaining an address of the displayed web page, determining a format for printing the information on receipt paper using the address, creating a script to print the information in the format, and executing the script to print the information on the receipt paper.
