  • Patent number: 8342266
Abstract: In one aspect of the present invention, a downhole rotary steerable system comprises a fluid path defined by a bore formed within a drill string component. A valve located within a wall of the bore which hydraulically connects the bore with a fluid cavity. A steering nozzle disposed on the drill string component and in communication with the fluid cavity. The valve is configured to control flow from the bore to the fluid cavity with an azimuthal sensing mechanism configured to determine the azimuth of the steering nozzle and instrumentation configured to control the valve based off of input from the azimuthal sensing mechanism.

  • Patent number: 8314608
Abstract: In one aspect of the present invention a method of determining a distance to a ferrous material comprises providing a plurality of magnetometers spaced at varying distances from a ferrous material, detecting a ferrous material with each of the plurality of magnetometers individually, establishing one of the plurality of magnetometers as a primary magnetometer, obtaining sensor readings from each of the plurality of magnetometers, forming a first ratio of the differences in the sensory readings of the primary magnetometer to the sensory readings of the other magnetometers, forming a second ratio of the differences in inversely cubed distances to the ferrous material from the primary magnetometer to inversely cubed distances to the ferrous material from the other magnetometers, setting the first ratio and the second ratio equal to each other, and calculating the distance to the ferrous material from the plurality of magnetometers.

  • Patent number: 7650951
Abstract: In one embodiment of the invention, a downhole tool string component comprising a through bore running there through formed to accept drilling fluid. At least one mechanical actuation device is also disposed within the through bore. A guide channel is disposed within the through bore and comprises a geometry shaped to conduct the at least one mechanical actuation device. A switch is disposed within the guide channel in an original position and actuatable by the at least one mechanical actuation device to a subsequent position. A resettable mechanism is in contact with the switch wherein the resettable mechanism returns the switch to its original position. A receptacle may also be disposed within the through bore comprising a geometry shaped to accept the at least one mechanical actuation device.
