  • Patent number: 4017014
Abstract: A device for sensing notches in an edge of a longitudinally transported film strip has a two-armed lever pivoted at a point to one side of the film path to deflect in the film plane. One arm carries at its end a spring biased roller which rotates freely against the moving unnotched film edge but which is biased into engagement with a notch to deflect the lever. The other lever arm is contacted by the actuating button of a microswitch the internal spring of which biases the lever to a quiescent position. A preselected deflection of the lever from this position actuates the microswitch to indicate the presence of a notch. Stops limit the deflection of the lever which is essentially normal to the direction of film movement, deflecting from a just obtuse to a just acute angle when entrained by a notch. The microswitch may be replaced by a photoelectric switching arrangement.

  • Patent number: 4017088
Abstract: A shaft seal comprises a casing having a circumferentially extending T-shaped recess surrounding the shaft and in which are located one or more adjoining rows of seal segments displaceable in the radial direction. Each seal segment includes a radially outer suspension part by which it is supported in the T-shaped recess, a radially inner seal part having axially spaced serrations confronting the surface of the shaft which, in cooperation with axially spaced seal strips on the shaft, establish a labyrinth type seal, and an intermediate part located between the radially outer and inner parts. The construction of at least the last row of segments on the low-pressure side of the seal is such that the median plane of the serrated seal part is axially offset from the median plane of the intermediate part in the direction of the high-pressure side of the seal.

  • Patent number: 4015703
Abstract: A transport system or conveyor for flexible items comprises at least two successive groups of three rollers. Each group has a larger diameter roller with which two smaller driven rollers provide nips which are angled to another. The entry nip of a following group is angled with respect to the exit nip of the preceding group such that an item is conveyed through successive nips along a wavy or zig-path. At least one of the two smaller rollers of a group is adjustable to set the entry or exit angle. The system is used in apparatus including a treatment station located between two successive roller groups, the treatment itself inducing a bend in the flexible items which is allowed for by the relative angling of the nips. A particular application is to the moving of photographic papers through a drying station in photographic developing machine.

  • Patent number: 4016082
Abstract: A device for diffusing substances between two fluids via semi-permeable diaphragms for dialysis apparatus in general and in particular as so-called artificial kidneys. The diaphragms are disposed in pairs between spacer plates and each plate includes an arrangement of flow-through ducts for the respective fluid connected to inlets and outlets respectively. A first fluid is arranged to be ducted between the diaphragms of each pair and a second fluid is arranged to be ducted outside the diaphragms, the diaphragms forming between them a network of ducts for the first fluid. In order to make it possible to prevent such duct networks having a well defined thickness and volume, the diaphragms are joined together by gluing, heat sealing, or the like within a pattern of spots, lines and/or small areas.

  • Patent number: 4012654
Abstract: A resilient structure for mounting the stator component of a synchronous electrical machine on its baseplate includes a plurality of spring brackets interconnecting respective points of attachment on the periphery of the stator component with the baseplate and which extend in radial planes as related to the stator axis. Each spring bracket includes at least one leaf spring the ends of which are held in spring retainers incorporating ribs disposed in the plane of the spring flexure. The ribs at opposite ends of the spring are rigidly fixed respectively to the stator and baseplate and the one or more leaf springs utilized in each mounting bracket are statically stressed only in tension by the weight of the stator component and are subjected to a dynamic bending stress in response to torsional vibrations occurring in the stator and which are absorbed by the springs which are softer in the peripheral direction than in the radial and axial directions.

  • Patent number: 4012539
Abstract: This invention is a new method of applying an arylene sulphide polymer bearing lining to a bearing backing in particular where the polymer is poly phenylene sulphide. In order to get effective cross-linking in the linking and effective bonding to the backing it has been found of importance to include with the uncured polymer an oxidizing agent preferably a metallic oxide powder in the proportion by weight to the polymer of about 5:95. Copper, tin, lead and manganese are preferred metallic oxides because the residue metals left in the bearing lining can have helpful bearing properties in certain applications.

  • Patent number: 4009570
Abstract: A torque converter comprises a vaned rotary impeller shell secured to the flywheel of a motor for driving the same, a vaned rotary turbine component secured to a turbine shaft which constitutes the output of the converter as a result of the torque conversion which takes place between the impeller and turbine vanes, and a vaned stator component located between the impeller and turbine vanes and which is coupled to a stator shaft surrounding the turbine shaft by means of a one-way clutch. In order to permit the one-way clutch to be easily removed, the impeller shell includes a removable hub portion secured by means of a ring of bolts to a flange on the impeller shell and this flange is dimensioned in such manner that its internal diameter is greater than the external diameter of the one-way clutch. Thus when the impeller hub is removed, the one-way clutch can be slid axially from its operating position and removed through the opening created by removal of the hub.

  • Patent number: 4008630
Abstract: A fluid pressure control system for automatic transmission includes a fluid pressure source, a fluid pressure regulating valve for regulating the fluid from the source to a particular line pressure, and a plurality of frictional engaging devices, adapted to be actuated by the line pressure through means of a manual shift valve, for attaining a particular gear ratio within the gear trains of the transmission which are interposed between the input and output shafts. A governor valve generates a governor pressure in response to the rotational speed of the input shaft, a throttle valve generates a throttle pressure in response to the engine throttle valve, shift valve selectively actuates the frictional engaging devices in response to the governor and throttle pressures, and a reducing valve actuates to restrict the throttle pressure to a threshold calibration value when the throttle pressure exceeds the value.

  • Patent number: 4005350
Abstract: A self-controlled polyphase bridge type inverter utilizes controllable valves of the semi-conductor type such as thyristors in the branches of the bridge, the bridge being fed from the output of a rectifier by way of an intermediate d.c. voltage link circuit that includes at least one smoothing condenser and at least one smoothing inductance. In the event of a through-going ignition i.e. a mal-function in the inverter all controllable valves of the inverter including load valves and/or any auxiliary valves are activated simultaneously by an ignition pulse so that the smoothing condenser together with such inductances as are included in the inverter form an oscillating circuit while the valves are simultaneously ignited. In order to protect the inverter structure under such a condition, a diode in series with a resistor is connected electrically in parallel with the smoothing condenser, the diode being wired in the blocking direction relative to the normal polarity of the d.c.
