Abstract: In the production of packs with outer wrappers which have a tear-open strip (12), the latter of continuous material strips (18), for the purpose of severing the tear-open strips (12), are provided with printing, markings (24), etc. Moreover, the film webs (13) from which the outer wrappers are made also are preferably provided with markings, printing or printed marks (25). Sensing elements help to detect the relative positions of the tear-open strip (12) and the film webs (13) on account of the printing and the drive of the film web (13) and/or of the material strip (18) is controlled accordingly.

Abstract: A device for retaining and trussing the hocks of poultry carcass in juxtaposition and proximal to the body during processing, packaging, shipping, storage, and/or cooking. The present invention, including a hock retaining member, may be constructed of a unitary, plate-like member of resilient material and it includes two openings for fitting about and retaining the hocks, an anchor to be affixed to the poultry carcass, and a connecting member between the hock retaining member and the anchor. The connecting member provides a spring force to keep the hocks and thus the legs juxtaposed to the carcass and each other.
Abstract: A method of testing a subject's competence for operating machines by successively presenting a plurality of pages of scattered images to the subject, having the subject establish a path through the scattered images on each of the plurality of pages, recording the absolute time required for the subject to establish the path through the scattered images on each of the plurality of pages, determining the relative time required for the subject to establish the path on at least two of the plurality of pages of scattered images, and classifying the subjects competence for operating machines based on the absolute time and the relative time.
Abstract: To improve the liquid barrier properties of a carpet, a repellency compound, such as a fluorochemical, is applied to the backstitch side or underside of the primary backing layer of a carpet.
Abstract: A combined animal information tag and system comprising a relatively permanent primary information tag attached directly to the animal to provide primary information about the animal and a removable or replaceable supplemental identification or informational tag attached to the primary information tag to provide additional information about the animal.

Abstract: The invention relates to a lantern, preferably for use aboard ships, in particular leisure vessels, which has a housing, at least one illuminant and a light-permeable cover. According to the invention, at least one LED is provided as the illuminant and is associated with a beam baffler.
Abstract: An anchor to inhibit rotation of a device relative to an oil well casing, comprising a tubular mandrel adapted for direct or indirect connection to the device; a rotatable cylindrical housing with a plurality of apertures and able to receive at least a portion of the mandrel concentrically therethrough; a plurality of spaced apart anchoring slips disposed between the housing and the mandrel in registry with respective ones of the apertures in the housing's outer surface; a rotation mechanism associated with the mandrel to engage and then move respective ones of the anchoring slips radially towards and then into temporarily anchoring contact with the casing; and one or more drag blocks disposed in the housing in registry with respective ones of the apertures in the housing's outer surface to extend radially outwardly therefrom, each of the drag blocks being normally biased into frictional contact with the casing.
Abstract: A method to prepare new or unexpected polymorphs of materials which have not been observed, or to obtain a known polymorph under different conditions than those in which it is usually made, by using a laser to cause nucleation and crystal growth to occur in a supersaturated solution in such a way as to obtain a crystal structure which would not normally appear without the use of the laser.
Abstract: A magnetic field modulation system for a cochlear implant: The magnetic field modulation system receives audible tones and processes the tones into radio frequency signals that are received by a radio frequency coil system. The radio frequency coil system has a transmitting coil and a receiving coil wound in a plurality of configurations. The transmitting coil is implanted in the ear canal wherein it receives processed radio frequency signals. The receiving coil is implanted into the middle ear wherein it receives the radio frequency signals from the transmitting coil. The receiving coil is hermetically sealed inside an enclosure wherein it receives and demodulates the radio frequency signal. Audio electrical signals are extracted from the demodulated radio frequency signal and delivered to the cochlea via an electrode. The audio electrical signals are received by the human brain via the nerves from the cochlea.

Abstract: An alarm system (100) to wake sleeping occupants in the event of an emergency has a receiver (105) for detecting a warning signal (130) emitted from an external device (125), such as a smoke or carbon monoxide detector. A processor (11) compares the received warning signal to a predetermined signal and, if they correspond, then a transmitter (115) transmits an alarm (135). The predetermined signal can be preprogrammed or it can be learned by alarm system. The alarm is at least one of an audible, visual, vibratory, and/or olfactory communication. A customized audible communication in a voice familiar to the occupants can be recorded and stored in the alarm system. In addition, the system may provide different alarms before and after motion is detected.

Abstract: A block pavement comprising (concrete) paving blocks (11, 12) is formed in such a way that individual paving strips (21, 22) adjoining one another are delimited from one another by strip joints (23, 24) designed in a wave-like manner. Each paving strip (21, 22) comprises a block unit (10), which is formed along the lines of the contour of a paving strip (21, 22).
Abstract: Compositions useful in treating immune modulated disease comprising an anticytokine antibody or immune active drug capable of modifying cytokine activity or modulating the immune system microencapsulated with a biodegradable nonantigenic material, such as albumin or PLGA. When the composition is introduced into a subject, it is phagocytosed by the target organ, the target organ digests the microsphere, releasing the drug or an active form or fragment thereof intracellularly. The drug then modifies the target organ function, thereby modulating it's activity. A method is disclosed for preparation of the microencapsulated composition.
