Abstract: Alkanes are oxidized by contact with oxygen-containing gas in the presence as catalyst of a metalloporphyrin in which hydrogen atoms in the porphyrin ring have been substituted with one or more cyano groups. Hydrogen atoms in the porphyrin ring may also be substituted with halogen atoms.
Abstract: Hydrocarbons, and particularly lower molecular weight alkanes and cycloalkanes, may readily be oxidized with air or O.sub.2 to form such products as alcohols, ketones, and the like selectively on high yields when there is employed as the catalyst a highly active azide-activated metal coordination complex having the structure ##STR1## where M is a transition metal; " " is a ligand; and X is azide. The invention is also directed to certain novel azide-activated metal coordination complex catalysts per se.

Abstract: A sulfated calcined solid catalyst which comprises (1) oxide or hydroxide of Group III or Group IV, e.g. zirconium, metal, (2) oxide or hydroxide of Group V, Group VI or Group VII, e.g. manganese or molybdenum, metal and (3) oxide or hydroxide of Group VIII, e.g. iron, or cobalt metal, is used to isomerize normal alkanes having 4 to 7 carbon atoms per molecule in the liquid phase to obtain high octane number blending components for motor fuel and/or valuable chemical and fuel intermediates.

Abstract: A process for the preparation of a dispersed Group VIB metal sulfide catalyst which is promoted with a Group VIII metal for use in hydrocarbon oil hydroprocessing comprising dissolving a Group VIB metal compound, such as molybdenum oxide or tungsten oxide, with ammonia to form a water soluble compound such as aqueous ammonium molybdate or ammonium tungstate. The aqueous ammonium molybdate or ammonium tungstate is sulfided in a plurality of sulfiding steps at increasing temperatures. A compound containing a Group VIII metal is added to any sulfiding step in preference to the Group VIB metal dissolving step. The catalyst slurry and feed oil can then be passed to a hydroprocessing reactor.
Abstract: A process for the recovery of a spent molybdenum catalyst from a hydroprocess for the upgrading of a nickel and vanadium containing hydrocarbonaceous mineral oil. The nickel and vanadium contaminated molybdenum catalyst is oxidized to convert the metals to oxides. Aqueous ammonia is added to preferentially dissolve molybdenum from nickel and vanadium. An amount of ammonia is used in excess of the amount required to produce an active catalyst for recycle and the excess ammonia is removed prior to recycle of the catalyst. The selectively of the separation of molybdenum from nickel and vanadium is improved by adding a reducing agent before or during the ammonia dissolving step. Hydrazine is a suitable reducing agent. The recovered molybdenum is sulfided and recycled.

Abstract: A process for the production of transportation fuels from heavy hydrocarbonaceous feedstock is provided comprising a two-stage, close-coupled process, wherein the first stage comprises a hydrothermal zone into which is introduced a mixture comprising a feedstock and finely ground hydroprocessing catalyst having coke-suppressing and demetalizing activity, and hydrogen; and the second, close-coupled stage comprises a hydrocatalytic zone into which substantially all the effluent from the first stage is directly passed and processed under hydrocracking conditions. The first-stage ground catalyst may also be spent catalyst from which most metals have been removed.

Abstract: A process for separating solids from hydrocarbons in a slurry of hydrocarbonaceous solids and solvent is disclosed comprising atomizing the slurry, introducing and mixing the atomized slurry and superheated steam in a stripping zone, vaporizing the hydrocarbons, and separately removing the vapors and the solids. The process is particularly useful in an oil shale recovery process.
Abstract: Bitumen recovered from tar sand by direct solvent extraction followed by washing of the sand tailings with countercurrent solvent flow and a solvent/aqueous phase separation step to recover solvent and residual bitumen.
Abstract: A novel catalyst composition comprising a solid cracking catalyst and a diluent containing substantially catalytically inactive crystalline aluminosilicate.
Abstract: Deposit control additives to maintain cleanliness in internal combustion engines are provided. The additives are hydrocarbyl-terminated poly(oxyalkylene) aminohydrocarbyloxyhydrocarbyl carbamates, also referred to as polyether aminoether carbamates.
Abstract: A liquid level sensing device, particularly useful for apparatus designed to humidify oxygen gas being administered to patients undergoing respiratory therapy is disclosed. The liquid level sensing device detects the liquid level in a canister having an optical probe therein. A bracket, rotatable on a frame of the device, carries a light source and a light sensing member for determining liquid level in the canister in conjunction with the probe. The hinged bracket engaging relation, and it also rotates out of probe-engaging relation and registry with the light probe. When the bracket is out of registry with the light probe, the canister may be removed and replaced. The bracket may be releasably retained out of probe-engaging relation by means of a snap fit structure.
Abstract: A disposable swab for application of medicament and the like to the skin, which comprises a flat, sheetlike strip and a pad member centrally attached to at least one side of the strip. The first inner pair of fold lines is transversely positioned in the strip, with each fold line of the first pair being positioned on opposite sides of, and adjacent opposite ends of, the pad member by generally equal distances, to permit opposed terminal portions of the strip to be folded rearwardly relative to the pad. A second, outer pair of fold lines may be transversely positioned in the strip, each fold line of the second pair being positioned adjacent opposite ends of the strip by generally equal distances to permit end portions of the rearwardly folded terminal portions to be pinched by the fingers together into flat, abutting relation. Accordingly, the strip can form a structure which is generally triangular in cross section, with the base of the triangular cross section carrying the pad member.

Abstract: Quick setting, anionic bitumen emulsion compositions, suitable for road paving, recreational surfaces, etc., are formulated by emulsifying the bitumen in water with an ammonium or alkali metal salt of a hydrocarbon-substituted sulfuric, sulfonic, phosphoric or phosphonic acid emulsifier, mixing the emulsion with a fine aggregate and, prior to spreading the aggregate emulsion mixture, introducing an alkaline earth metal set initiator. The resulting composition rapidly breaks to a hard cohesive structure, so as to permit early use by traffic.
