  • Patent number: 4462845
Abstract: Substantially completely deoxidized, consolidated dispersion-strengthened copper stock of sizable cross section and particulates capable of being thus consolidated into such stock are shown. The stock exhibits ductility substantially greater than that of otherwise corresponding stock which contains about 100-500 ppm of available oxygen. Also shown is a staged powder deoxidation process using hydrogen or like reducing gas followed by the sequestration of remaining available oxygen with a minute proportion of diffusible, normally solid oxygen getter.

  • Patent number: 4442076
Abstract: An entrained flow process for chlorinating fine iron-containing titaniferous powder with chlorine gas and/or organochlorides in the presence of fine porous coal-based reductant powder for obtaining product chlorides of titanium and iron wherein said both of said powders are entrained in and flow downwardly through a chlorination reaction zone at a temperature of at least about 800.degree. C. is improved by: (a) supplying fine titaniferous and reductant powders to said reaction zone at a rate sufficient for establishing and maintaining titanium, iron and carbon reactants therein in substantial excess over those stoichiometric for the complete reaction of the chlorine present; (b) employing as at least the major portion of fresh reductant feed reactive char having surface area of at least about 10 m..sup.2 /g.

  • Patent number: 4440572
Abstract: A process for making a novel alloy of a dispersion strengthened copper by blending dispersion strengthened copper powder and a powdered modifying metal, heat treating the blend to form the alloy, and the compacting and working the compact to densify it.

  • Patent number: 4421923
Abstract: There is provided a new class of crown ethers characterized by an --OH functional group attached to a carbon atom in the heterocyclic ether ring portion and derivatives thereof. A novel process for making such crown ethers is also provided which is characterized by reacting a bisphenol ether with an epihalohydrin to effect ring closure and provide the appendant --OH group. These products are especially useful as complexing agents.

  • Patent number: 4418856
Abstract: An inverting tow plaiter adapted to position tow onto a receiving end of a main conveyor in a series of overlying laps oriented to permit trouble-free removal of tow from the main conveyor discharge end. The plaiter comprises a continuous, moving canvas belt positioned above the main conveyor constrained to follow the downwardly extending semi-circular path, and a stationary housing spaced from the belt to define with the belt a curved chute of narrowing cross-section. The chute has a gap width at the chute upper end which is greater than at the chute lower end. Structure for depositing tow onto the canvas belt at the chute upper end in a series of overlying laps which extend transversely across the belt is provided.
