Abstract: There is disclosed a process for preparing sulfonyl acids from mercaptans in a single reactor. The mercaptan is converted to a mercaptide and reacted with an acrylic acid or salt thereof in a basic reaction medium. After formation of the thioether, the reaction medium is treated with chlorine gas to oxidize the thioether to the sulfone. Mild conditions and readily available starting materials render the method capable of preparing such acids efficiently in large scale amounts.

The components curable by condensation comprise amino resins and co-reactants. The components curable by free-radical initiated polymerization comprise acryloyl compounds.
Abstract: A process for the removal of sulfur dioxide from gasses produced by processes resulting in off gases at elevated temperatures as in the combustion of sulfur containing fuels such as coal and fuel oil by contacting the gasses with a composition including a source of calcium, and a catalytically effective amount of a molybdenum containing catalyst for the oxidation of sulfur dioxide to sulfur trioxide which then reacts with the calcium compound to form calcium sulfate.

Abstract: Cobalt is reversibly extracted from cobalt bearing aqueous solutions using solvent extraction techniques by contacting the aqueous solution with a hydrocarbon solvent containing a N-alkylakanohydroxamic acid having at least about 8 carbon atoms. A new class of cobalt complexes is also provided.
