  • Patent number: 5462880
Abstract: A ratiometric method for using optical sensors is provided to measure dissolved oxygen in a fluid sample. The sensor is formulated so as to contain an oxygen permeable membrane of a cured perfluorinated urethane polymer and, incorporated therein, an oxygen-sensitive indicator component and a reference dye component. The emission spectrum from the indicator component is calibrated by comparison with that of the reference dye, which is substantially less sensitive to oxygen-quenching and which has a photodecomposition rate similar to the indicator component. • Patent number: 5356781
Abstract: Pancreatic disease can be diagnosed by assaying a patient's body fluid such as serum or urine, for pancreatic activation peptides (PAP) released from zymogens by proteolytic activation. Particularly useful are peptides having C-terminal D.sub.4 K sequences. The method uses polyclonal or monoclonal antibodies generated and selected for C-terminal specificity on PAP so that the tests only report free PAP not parent zymogen. Also described are peptides and antibodies labelled with revealing agents and/or immobilised on solid supports and their use in diagnostic assays and kits. In pancreatic disease the tests distinguish necrotising from oedematous acute pancreatitis and permit severity prediction and monitoring as well as diagnosing chronic pancreatitis in exacerbation.

  • Patent number: 5354825
Abstract: A fiber optic sensing device for measuring a chemical or physiological parameter of a body fluid or tissue is provided. To one end of the fiber is attached a polymer including a plurality of photoactive moieties selected from the group consisting of chromophores and lumophores, the photoactive moieties spaced apart so as to minimize chemical or physical interaction therebetween while optimizing the density of photoactive moieties. In one embodiment, a polymer chain is covalently bound to photoactive moieties through functional groups such as esters, amides, or the like. In a second embodiment, a polymer chain is inherently fluorescent and is formed from at least one monomeric unit. These devices are particularly useful as pH and oxygen sensors.

The thermally stable CDase can be isolated from Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The yeast isolated enzyme has a molecular weight of approximately 32 kDa, as determined by gel filtration chromatography, and is composed of two subunits, each with a molecular weight of about 17 kDa. Thermally stable yeast CDase so purified shows no significant sequence homology with other known sequenced proteins.

  • Patent number: 5319121
Abstract: A method is provided for preparing preceramic polymers and and silicious ceramic materials which derive therefrom. The preceramic polymers are polysiloxanes which are synthesized by catalytically activating Si--H bonds in a hydridosiloxane starting material and replacing the activated hydrogen atoms with non-hydrogen substituents. These preceramic polysiloxanes are pyrolyzed in a selected atmosphere to give the desired ceramic product. Ceramic products which may be prepared by this technique include silica, silicon oxynitride, silicon carbide, and metal silicates.
