  • Patent number: 5361823
Abstract: A decomposable casting core (56a, 56b) is formed in-situ with a sleeve-like liner member (64) and the assembly mounted within the mold cavity (24) of a cylinder block casting mold (22) for lining piston cylinder chambers (62a, 62b) of a cylinder block (26) cast within the mold (22). The liner member (64) is formed with an inner annular recess (80) which receives a corresponding annular projection (76) of the core (56a, 56b) for preventing the liner (64) from sliding axially on the core (56a, 56b) during casting.

  • Patent number: 5361019
Abstract: An illumination level control device (10) is disclosed which sequentially reduces the illumination level of a multi-bulb lamp (12). The illumination level control device (10) incorporates two D flip-flops (38,40) configured in a master-slave relationship wherein the two D flip-flops (38,40) change their respective states when the clock (60) sends a positive-edge of the clock signal thereto. A portion (58) of the device (10) sets the two D flip-flops (38,40) when the wall switch (22) is off for more than a predetermined time. In the case of a three bulb (14,16,18) lamp (12), a zero state preventor (56) prevents all of the bulbs (14,16,18) from being turned off when the wall switch (22) is in the ON position. The zero state preventor (56) effectively eliminates the state wherein the outputs of both of the two D flip-flops (38,40) are low.

  • Patent number: 5358300
Abstract: A modular assembly for separating a passenger compartment from an engine compartment in an automotive vehicle body comprises three structural cross car members that combine to provide sufficient cross car stiffness between the side pillars so as to eliminate any need for an upper cross car beam at the cowl of the vehicle body. The three structural cross car members include a front of dash panel, an intermediate close out panel and an instrument panel carrier that form two rows of ducts for meeting the needs of the heating, ventilating and air conditioning system of the vehicle and the wiring requirements of the instrument panel. The instrument panel carrier is part of a covered instrument panel subassembly that includes a shell and an underlying foam cushion. The foam cushion is foamed in place in a mold that includes a slide and pivot mechanism for manipulating a mold lid and clamp between a closed clamped position and a shaping position where the molded subassembly is accessible for a shaping operation.

  • Patent number: 5357239
Abstract: An actuating device (10) for operating a safety unit (12) mounts on a vehicle (14) and moves between a retracted position adjacent the vehicle and an extended position extending outwardly from the vehicle. A housing (16) is fixedly mounted on the vehicle and a bracket (18) is pivotably mounted on the housing for movement about a predetermined pivot axis between the retracted and the extended positions. The actuating device (10) also includes a drive mechanism (20) for pivoting the bracket (18) about the pivot axis between the retracted position and the extended position. A torsional spring (22) is mounted about the pivot axis and torsionally interconnects the bracket (18) and the drive mechanism (20) for allowing relative movement therebetween when a predetermined force is applied to the bracket.

  • Patent number: 5355933
Abstract: A melt-out zinc core is coated with insulating mica material and a graphite release agent and supported within a die cavity of a high pressure squeeze casting apparatus. Molten casting metal having a melting temperature above that of the core is injected into the die and then pressurized to about 15,000 psi to squeeze form the article in the die and around the core. The resultant article and core are then heated to above the melting temperature of the core and the core extracted from the article through cast-in outlet openings formed by the core. The insulating material and release agent are also extracted from the cast article by rinsing the cored passages of the cast article with water.

  • Patent number: 5356180
Abstract: A ski guard assembly for use with skis of different lengths that have tip and tail end portions, sides, tops with top corners and bottoms with bottom edges includes an outboard and an inboard guard. The outboard guard has a channel that is closed at one end and open at an opposite end for removably receiving an end portion of a ski. The inboard guard has a assembly complimentary channel that is open at each end for removably receiving a portion of the ski adjacent the end portion of the ski. The inboard guard is slideably attached to the outboard guard so that it slides along the length of the ski to adjust to the length of the assembly when the outboard guard member is installed on the end portion of the ski. The ski guard assembly is secured to the ski by clamping the inboard guard onto the ski after the length adjustment is made.

  • Patent number: 5352532
Abstract: A decorative, light transmitting panel including opposite inner and outer faces is formed on a substrate comprising injection molded clear plastic resin having a low level of process induced internal stress and at least one optical quality surface finish underlying the outer panel surface for optimizing light transmission through the resin. A thin, hard, transparent, abrasion and chemical resistant and ultraviolet light resistant protective layer or coating of plastic resin is permanently bonded to the optical quality surface finish of the low stress substrate to form at least one outer surface of the whole panel and the coating provides a hard, tough abrasion resistant outer surface capable of lasting a long time without substantial diminishment of light transmission through the panel. The low internal stress of the molded resin substrate provides superior adhesion for permanently bonding the hard protective coating to prevent micro-cracking and/or delamination during normal thermal cycling between - 40.
