Patent number: 4525557Abstract: A process for the polymerization of ethylene using as the catalyst a novel solid catalytic complex comprising Mg, Si, and either Ti or V. An organoaluminum co-catalyst is also employed. The novel catalytic complex is prepared by a process which comprises:(a) reacting a silanol having the formula ##STR1## where R, R' and R" can be the same or different and are selected from the group consisting of aliphatic hydrocarbons having from 2 to 12 carbon atoms or phenyl or substituted phenyl where such substituents have from one to three alkyl groups, and alkyl group having from one to four carbon atoms and where R" can additionally be selected from --OH, with a magnesium dialkyl where each alkyl group can have from one to 12 carbon atoms to form a first reaction product;(b) reacting said first reaction product with trichlorosilane to form a second reaction product; and(c) reacting said second reaction product with a metal compound having the formula:MeX.sub.Type: GrantFiled: February 27, 1984Date of Patent: June 25, 1985Assignee: Gulf Oil CorporationInventors: William J. Patent number: 4507055Abstract: A system for automatically controlling the intermittent pumping of a well minimizes fluid pound occurrence without reducing well production. The pump is operated in a learn mode until pump-off of the well when the pump is deactivated for a preset period. The pump is then operated in a control mode in which the pump is repeatedly cycled on to pump the well for at least one stroke less than the pumping time of the learn mode and then off for a preset period. Control mode operation is continued for a predetermined number of cycles after which the learn mode operation is repeated to reset the pumping time for the control mode operation.Type: GrantFiled: July 18, 1983Date of Patent: March 26, 1985Assignee: Gulf Oil CorporationInventors: John C. Fair, Kenneth R. Ferguson

Patent number: 4303127Abstract: The present invention provides a multistage process for the removal of tar, water and particulate contaminants from a hot product gas resulting from the in-situ gasification of an underground coal deposit, which comprises passing the hot product gas through a first heat exchange zone in indirect heat exchange relationship with a gasification gas to thereby sufficiently reduce the temperature of the product gas so as to separate the tar present in the product gas and provide a substantially tar-free product gas. Thereafter, the tar-free product gas is withdrawn from the first heat exchange zone and passed through at least one subsequent heat exchange zone in indirect or direct heat exchange relationship with a heat exchange material which has a lower temperature than the product gas. A major portion of the water originally present in the hot product gas is removed in the subsequent heat exchange zone.Type: GrantFiled: February 11, 1980Date of Patent: December 1, 1981Assignee: Gulf Research & Development CompanyInventors: John Freel, John C.
