    Abstract: This invention concerns cationic core-shell particles having an acid-insoluble polymeric core component and an acid-swellable polymeric shell component disposed generally about said core so that upon neutralizing said shell with acid, a portion of said shell remains attached or associated with said core; and wherein said shell contains a stabilizer that is covalently bonded to the polymeric shell component. This invention further concerns polymer latex compositions wherein said polymeric shell component has been neutralized and substantially, but not totally, dissolved so as to form a blend of neutralized core-shell polymer and an aqueous solution of neutralized shell polymer. More particularly, the invention concerns the use of latex compositions produced from these cationic core-shell particles to formulate ink jet receptive coatings.

    Abstract: A new shaped activated carbon and the method of its manufacture are disclosed. The invention resides in the crosslinking of a polymeric cellulose, such as sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), within the carbon bodies after they are shaped, employing the CMC as a binder for the activated carbon. The approach to attain product mechanical strength and water stability by crosslinking rather than high temperature heat treatment is not obvious from the prior art teaching. The crosslinking reaction occurs at temperatures below 270° C. In addition, this new binder technology produces shaped carbon bodies having key properties beyond the best level that has been accomplished with other binders.

    Abstract: In a tall oil refining operating plant, a warm water loop is disclosed for cooling the tall oil heads fraction extracted from the crude tall oil, rather than the conventional use of cold water. This avoids condensation and the subsequent solidification of athraquinone pulping aid remaining in the crude tall oil; thus, avoiding fouling of the cooling towers. The temperature of the warm-water is controlled automatically by tempering the cold water entering the warm water “cooling” loop, while removing excessively warm water from said loop to the cooling tower system, as needed.

In the preparation of the invention sizing composition, the pre-reacting of either neat or solutions of alum and rosin before introducing the mixture into the papermaking furnish, allows the alum to be free to react with the rosin size without any competition from other cations in the furnish.
