Abstract: A process and apparatus for continuously controlling the crystallization of material systems in particular fat containing substances, such as chocolate masses by a thermal treatment which entails cooling and heating. The cooling process is far stronger than under the traditional procedural method, is in fact so strong that under static conditions it would cause the material system that is to be processed to solidify and harden spontaneously. This solidification is prevented by a heating process which uses mechanical energy resulting from shear stress, in a shear flow, where the introduction of mechanical energy and hence the local temperature are spontaneously and sensitively adjustable. This permits the achievement of particular pre-determinable crystal modifications, and hence of specific desired properties in the final product. The treatment states place within a mechanism consisting of a cylindrical container and a rotor, driven rotationally, whose rotational speed is adjustable.

Abstract: A process for producing 2-aryl-2H-benzotriazole by reducing an o-nitroazobenzene with a saccharide having an aldehyde group as a reducing agent in the presence of fluorenol as a catalyst and a base in solution. The reaction is conducted at a temperature of from about 60.degree. C. to about 80.degree. C. The reaction time and amount of catalyst is significantly reduced compared to the use of an aromatic ketone catalyst. The invention also provides a method for producing 2-aryl-2H-benzotriazole by reducing a 2-aryl-2H-benzotriazole-N-oxide intermediate with a saccharide having an aldehyde group as a reducing agent, in the presence of fluorenol under similar conditions.

Abstract: A photoimaged article having a protected image composed of a colored image on a support; and a thin, transparent, flexible, nonself supporting, protective layer on the surface of the image. The layer is substantially nontacky at room temperature, and has at least a major amount based on the weight of the layer of one or more thermoplastic resins of a vinyl acetal, vinyl chloride, or acrylic polymer or copolymer having a Tg of from about 35.degree. C. to about 110.degree. C. The layer is capable of being adhesively transferred directly to the image when the layer is first applied on the release surface of a temporary support, and the image and protective layer are laminated together under pressure at temperatures of between about 60.degree. C. to about 180.degree. C. with subsequent removal of the temporary support. The side of said layer opposite to the image is free from additional layers. The adhesive layer is one which does not cohesively block at temperatures of about 50.degree. C. or less.

Abstract: A method for preparing 2,2'-methylene-bis-[6-(2H)-benzotriazol-2-yl)-4-hydrocarbyl phenols] is disclosed. According to the process(i) formaldehyde, a dialkylamine and a 4-hydrocarbyl-6-benzotriazolyl phenol as monomer are mixed;(ii) the mixture is heated to a temperature high enough to remove the water produced by the reaction of the mixture;(iii) thereafter an alkaline catalyst is added with heating for several hours;(iv) the phenol compound precipitates when the reaction mixture is neutralized and solvent for the salt product of the neutralization reaction is added in an amount sufficient to permit stirring. The solid product produced is 2,2'-methylene-bis-[6-(2H-benzotriazol-2-yl)-4-hydrocarbyl phenol] having the formula I: ##STR1## in which each R group is an alkyl group of one to twelve carbons or a cycloalkyl group of five to eight carbons and X is chloro or hydrogen.

Abstract: A process for converting a normally positive working photosensitive composition to a negative working composition. One forms a composition containing an alkali soluble resin, a 1,2 quinone diazide-4-sulfonyl compound and an acid catalyzed crosslinker in a solvent mixture. After drying and imagewise exposing, the composition is baked and developed to produce a negative image.

Abstract: This invention provides an improved negative-working or positive-working, single sheet color proofing method which can accurately reproduce images by using colored, photosensitive layers on substrates which are then overcoated with partially developable adhesive layers. The final construction is useful in predicting the image quality from a lithographic printing process. The partial removal of the adhesive layers cleans out any background stain which may remain from the incomplete removal of the photosensitive layer.
Abstract: This invention relates to water developable, negative working photosensitized sheet constructions which, upon exposure to an actinic radiation source through a screened image, can accurately reproduce said image. The construction is useful as a color proofing film which can be employed to predict the image quality from a lithographic printing process. The invention provides both overlay and transfer type proofing sheets which have good fingerprint resistance.
Abstract: A polymeric compound having the formula ##STR1## wherein x ranges from about 0.05 to about 0.5y ranges from about 0.80 to about 0.35z ranges from about 0.10 to about 0.25n ranges from about 50 to about 1500R is selected from the group consisting of phenyl and C.sub.1 to C.sub.4 alkyl substituted phenyl;K is selected from the group consisting of ##STR2## --S--, --O--, and --CH.sub.2 --, or is absent; P and P.sub.1 are selected from the group consisting of C.sub.1 to C.sub.4 alkyl, methoxy, ethoxy, butoxy, and H; andP.sub.1 may be the same as P or different.
