Patent number: 6679898Abstract: A system, apparatus and method for harvesting from the eye of a mammilian (e.g., cadaveric) donor a disc-shaped graft or lenticle consisting of corneal tissue and a quantity of scleral or pericorneal tissue wherein limbal stem cells are located. This graft or lenticle is then transplanted onto the eye of a human or veterinary patient to treat a disorder caused by the absence or deficiency of limbal stem cells in the patient's eye. The system of the present invention comprises a) an eye-contacting ring and cutter guide apparatus and b) a cutter apparatus. The eye-contacting ring and cutter guide apparatus is initially placed in contact with the donor eye such that a portion of the cornea and adjacent scleral or pericorneal tissue containing limbal stem cells protrudes upwardly through the center of the ring. The cutter is then engaged with guide member(s) formed on the ring and the cutter is advanced, severing the protruding cornea and stem-cell-containing pericorneal tissue.Type: GrantFiled: September 27, 2001Date of Patent: January 20, 2004Assignee: The Regents of the University of CaliforniaInventor: Roy S. Patent number: 6676386Abstract: An oilless air motor assembly useable for driving hydraulic pumps and the like includes a slide valve that moves back and forth relative to a valve sleeve situated about the slide valve. A low friction or lubricious dry seal member is disposed between the slide valve and the valve sleeve, thereby eliminating the need for added oil or lubricant and additionally avoiding the need for precise machining and matching (e.g., honing and lapping) of the slide valve and valve sleeve. Also provided is a kit for converting a previously manufactured air motor assembly that requires oil or added lubricant to an oilless air motor assembly. Such kit comprises the slide valve, valve sleeve and dry seal member as well as other optional parts associated with those elements.Type: GrantFiled: September 18, 2001Date of Patent: January 13, 2004Assignee: Southern California Hydraulic Engineering, Inc.Inventors: Oai Tuan Mach, Hung Dan Chan Mach

Patent number: 6676711Abstract: A cylindrical blade body of a hole cutter includes blades and grooves. Each of the blades is disposed alternately with a corresponding one of the grooves. A cutting edge of each blade includes an outer cutting edge, an inner cutting edge, and a stepped cutting edge. The outer cutting edge of each blade has a point located at a radial outer position of the outer cutting edge. The inner cutting edge of each blade has a point located between the inner cutting edge and the stepped cutting edge. The heights of the points of the inner cutting edges are substantially equal for all blades. The heights of the points of the outer cutting edges are different among the blades. This hole cutter makes it possible to reduce anti-cutting resistance and obtain an optimal cutting state.Type: GrantFiled: June 13, 2002Date of Patent: January 13, 2004Assignee: Omi Kogyo Co., Ltd.Inventor: Shohei Omi

Patent number: 6606760Abstract: A wiper device is located between a rear door and a rear window, which is opened independently from the door. An actuator having an output shaft is attached to the rear door. A power transmission unit includes a shaft holder attached to the rear window and a pivot shaft supported by the shaft holder. Before the shaft holder is attached to the rear window, a positioning mechanism fixes the position of the power transmission unit relative to the actuator such that the axis of the pivot shaft is aligned with the axis of the output shaft. Thus, the axes of the output shaft and the pivot shaft are fixed during the installation process. Therefore, no adjustment of these axis is required during installation.Type: GrantFiled: March 9, 2000Date of Patent: August 19, 2003Assignee: Asmo Co., LtdInventors: Yoshiyuki Koumo, Keisuke Kanazawa

Patent number: 6607517Abstract: A method for treating cardiac failure such as congestive heart failure by application of hypothermia. Hypothermia may be applied by endovascular cooling using a heat exchange catheter circulating heat exchange fluid between an external heat exchanger controlled using temperature feedback from a temperature probe on or in the patient to cool the heart to a sufficiently low temperature for a sufficient length of time to increase cardiac output and improve the vascular condition of the patient. The patient may be maintained in the hypothermic condition for a period of time and is then re-warmed slowly and controllably. The endovascular temperature management may be controlled automatically in response to a temperature probe on the patient, and shivering while the patient is cool may be combated using surface warming and anti-shivering drugs.Type: GrantFiled: August 24, 2001Date of Patent: August 19, 2003Assignee: Radiant Medical, Inc.Inventors: Michael W. Patent number: 6602241Abstract: Methods and apparatus for delivery of substances or apparatus to target sites located outside blood vessels within the body of a human or animal patient. A vessel wall penetrating catheter is inserted into the vasculature, positioned and oriented within a blood vessel near the target extravascular site and a penetrator is advanced from the catheter so as to penetrate outwardly through the wall of the blood vessel in the direction of the target site. Thereafter, a delivery catheter is passed through a lumen of the penetrator to the target site. A desired substance or apparatus is then delivered to or obtained from the target site. In some applications, the penetrator may be retracted into the vessel wall penetrating catheter and the vessel wall penetrating catheter may be removed, leaving the delivery catheter in place for chronic or continuous delivery of substance(s) to and/or obtaining of information or samples from the target site.Type: GrantFiled: January 17, 2001Date of Patent: August 5, 2003Assignee: TransVascular, Inc.Inventors: Joshua Makower, Theodore C.
