Abstract: Methyl methacrylate or other .alpha.-.beta. unsaturated esters are prepared by contacting an oxydehydrogenation-esterification catalyst with a feed mixture of a saturated acid (e.g., isobutyric acid), an alkyl alcohol (e.g., methanol), oxygen, with or with H.sub.2 O, preferably with H.sub.2 O for a time sufficient to form an alkyl .alpha.-.beta. unsaturated ester as described herein.
Abstract: Disclosed are antidotal compounds for use with active thiocarbamate and/or chloroacetanilide herbicides to control weeds without affecting crops such as corn and soybeans. Compositions of the antidote and the active thiocarbamates and/or chloroacetanilides are also disclosed.
Abstract: The ultraviolet light transmittance of ethylene glycol containing ultraviolet light absorbing impurities is increased by exposing the ethylene glycol to ultraviolet radiation at a wavelength of at least 220 nanometers from a controllable ultraviolet radiation emission source.
Abstract: Both novel and known S-(substituted-phenyl) N-alkylthiolcarbamates such as 4-fluorophenyl N-methylthiolcarbamate, and S-(substituted-phenyl) N,N-dialkylthiolcarbamates such as 2-chlorophenyl N,N-dimethylthiolcarbamate are disclosed. These are useful to control plant pests such as Phytophthorans infestans (Late Blight of Tomatoes) and Pythium ultimum (Damping Off). Also disclosed are the methods of controlling this plant pest with these compounds.

Abstract: Finely divided silica is used as a flattening agent to reduce gloss in lacquers and varnishes, but untreated silica tends to settle out of certain lacquers and varnishes to form a hard layer that is resistant to redispersion. Treatment of the silica with a reactive organopolysiloxane such as methyl hydrogen polysiloxane reduces the tendency of the silica to settle and renders it more easily redispersible. The treated silica may be incorporated into known lacquers, varnishes, and other coating compositions.
