  • Patent number: 4649828
Abstract: An ordnance device includes a submunition having a generally cylindrical case packed with an explosive charge. The rearmost end of the case is capped by a detonator that fires the explosive charge when a target is sensed. The front end of the case is capped by a liner that on detonation of the explosive charge converts to one or more explosively forged penetrators that speed toward the target at supersonic speed. By assembling the liner from a plurality of narrow metal strips arranged in parallel and weakly bonded together, the strips separate on detonation forming a plurality of aerodynamically stable slugs, each of which has undergone plastic deformation to form a projectile that is potentially lethal.

  • Patent number: 4646479
Abstract: A deburring method is presented wherein a cylindrical brush rotationally contacts the workpiece. The brush includes a mandrel having a central axle to provide support during use. To the mandrel is attached a multiplicity of long bristles. Each bristle is flexible and has impregnated therein a plurality of abrasive particles. The population density of the bristles on the brush is such that the outwardly extending ends can readily flex both in the plane of rotation and sidewise along the lengthwise dimension of the brush. Setting the brush so that the bristle ends overlap the surface of the workpiece being deburred, each bristle makes a slapping contact therewith. This results in one to two inches of each bristle being dragged endwise across the surface of the workpiece. The endwise movement of each bristle causes the abrasive particles imbedded therein to abrade the sharp edges of the workpiece. An automatic conveyor may be used to feed workpiece stock past the rotating brush at a predetermined rate.

  • Patent number: 4635553
Abstract: An air dispensed assembly in the form of a submunition cannister is disclosed which has the capability to perform a lateral maneuver during the final 1500 ft. of descent before impact. Maneuvering is accomplished by deploying a samara blade shaped wing from the rear of the submunition cannister after ejection from the casing of the launching shell. The wing is sized and provided with an angle of attack which causes the cylindrical shaped cannister to spin as it descends downward at approximately a constant rate of descent. A passive infrared sensor in the nose of the cannister provides target information to a data processor which generates steering commands to appropriately alter the wing angle of attack so as to bring about a corrective lateral change in direction. When within lethal range of the sensed target, the warhead in the submunition is detonated.

  • Patent number: 4610013
Abstract: An approach is disclosed for accomplishing redundancy in the central processor units of a remote multiplexer terminal (RMT). Through execution of a stored software program the RMT receives data from input/output devices, processes that data and transmits it to external equipment. The system uses two central processor units (CPU's), each with its own input/output (I/O) bus. Both CPU's actively and continuously monitor the status of the I/O subsystems. The software program designates one CPU as the "Master", the other CPU as the "Slave". The CPU designated as "Master" performs active control functions so long as error detection circuitry within each CPU determines that the operational status of the "Master" is good. Error detection is accomplished by incorporation of a "Watch Dog Timer" in each CPU. A failing CPU is redesignated to be a Slave (and is halted) and the previously designated Slave CPU is redesignated as a Master.

  • Patent number: 4603635
Abstract: A base element fuze having dual safing is disclosed. The fuze is useful with an explosive type shell propelled into a ballistic trajectory from the barrel of a gun. The fuze is actuated to move from first safety to the armed condition after experiencing the inertial setback forces of gun firing followed by the drag forces of deceleration during the ballistic flight phase before target impact. The firing circuit contains an inertial magnetic power supply or setback generator which produces a voltage pulse when the gun is fired, a storage capacitor to receive and store the pulse which is later used to initiate a detonator, and switch closure interface circuitry encircuiting the capacitor with the detonator at target impact. The sequence of events within the fuze is programmed by a spring driven rotor which is latched in first safety when assembled, is released when the gun fires, and moves to the armed position in about 18 ms.

  • Patent number: 4533994
Abstract: A priority gating system is disclosed which is useful with a communication subsystem having a multiplicity of parallel input/output lines. To service these lines a priority address determination is made for all channels with 0 designating the highest priority and (n-1), the lowest in an n-channel system. Each signal line to the input/output devices will have a card select buffer serially inserted therein. All of the buffers will be enabled during the data transfer portion of the cycle. At the end of the service cycle for message transfer, the central processing unit initiates a dual pulse interrupt acknowledge command which first disables all buffers, then after a short delay, activates priority decoder circuitry. The priority decoder circuitry determines which of the n-channel input/output lines is to be serviced during the next data cycle.

  • Patent number: 4522296
Abstract: A flail auger assembly is disclosed which is useful for unloading semi-liquid material from a holding tank mounted on a tractor drawn trailer. A rotatably mounted shaft extends lengthwise through the lower portion of the tank. One end of the shaft penetrates the front wall of the tank enabling connection with the power takeoff of the tractor. The second end penetrates the rear wall of the tank where it connects with the impeller of the discharge pump. A plurality of flails extend radially outward at regular intervals along the shaft. The flails are pivotally attached via pins which secure them to brackets welded to the rotatably mounted shaft. The pivotal axis of each flail allows it to aggressively attack the material in the tank while at the same time limiting the power drain on the tractor since the radius of effectiveness decreases as a function of increasing load.

  • Patent number: 4451200
Abstract: A combination air and oil cooled seal housing is provided which also utilizes trapped stagnant air as an insulator. The combination prevents coking of the oil supplied as a lubricant to the bearings and seals in the hot section of a turbine engine. Pressurized air is introduced from the compressor into the inner structure support housing by means of hollow passages. The pressurized air absorbs heat as it traverses the passages in the structure. The oil supply is connected to an annular shape cavity allowing the oil to be circulated therein and cool the seal support structure. Additional insulation is provided by cylindrically shaped trapped air shields surrounding the bearing package. Oil flowing through the structure can then properly lubricate the seals and bearings which support the turbine rotor stages within the housing assembly.
