  • Patent number: 6357095
Abstract: The burnishing head for hard disk processing includes a solid body having generally rectangular surfaces, including an upper surface, a burnishing pad surface, a front surface, a rear surface and two side surfaces. A plurality of burnishing pads are disposed upon the burnishing pad surface. The pads are shaped such that each pad has a burnishing edge that is generally parallel to said front surface and therefore orthogonal to the direction of media travel. The burnishing pads are preferably configured such that one frontward leading pad is centrally disposed proximate the front surface of the head, followed by two middle pads that are disposed in a spaced apart relationship. A single centrally disposed rear middle pad is formed behind the two middle pads, and two rear pads are disposed in a spaced apart relationship at the rear surface of the head. In the preferred embodiment the pads are generally triangular in shape and the outer surface of the leading and rearward pads is tapered.

  • Patent number: 6346183
Abstract: A fabrication method using a bottom anti-reflective coating (BARC) eliminating deleterious effects of unwanted reflected light during the photo exposure step of a photolithographic process. The BARC coating comprises a carbon coating having a thickness of 300 angstroms, deposited by a carbon ion beam deposition tool, and an initial silicon BARC coating layer having thickness of 20 angstroms deposited before the carbon coating. Where the BARC layer is utilized in a photolithographic NiFe pole tip fabrication process, a NiFe seed layer is first deposited upon a substrate. The BARC layer is then formed on the NiFe seed layer and the pole tip trench is then photolithographically created. Thereafter, the BARC layer is removed from the bottom of the trench, utilizing a reactive ion etch process, exposing the NiFe seed layer. The NiFe pole tip is then fabricated into the trench, and any remaining photoresist and BARC layer are removed.

  • Patent number: 6330122
Abstract: The hard disk testing and certifying device of the present invention includes a spin stand to rotate a disk to be tested. A single read/write head, including both a write head and a read head is mounted upon an armature which movably supports the read/write head. The device includes a computerized control system and signal processing system that provides write signals to the write head and receives and processes read head signals from the read head. In the preferred embodiment the read/write head simultaneously provides write signals to the disk and receives read signals from the disk. Preferably, the read/write head functions continually and the certification testing is conducted utilizing a spiral path. In the preferred read/write head the read head is disposed behind the write head and an electromagnetic field shield is disposed between them to reduce electromagnetic field interference between the write head and the read head during simultaneous operation.

  • Patent number: 6319102
Abstract: The cryogenic aerosol substrate cleaning system of the present invention includes a substrate support system that is disposed within a cleaning enclosure. A wafer, or other article to be cleaned is disposed upon the substrate support system. A cryogenic aerosol spray cleaning device is disposed within the enclosure to direct a cryogenic aerosol spray upon the surface of the wafer. The substrate support system includes an electrically floating chuck which supports the wafer, such that the chuck is separated from a grounded plane by an insulator. The chuck is capacitance-coupled to the grounded plane, and in alternative embodiments the chuck is also electrically coupled to the grounded plane. The substrate support system of the present invention acts to reduce the creation of tribocharges on the wafer, such that damage to wafers caused by such tribocharges is reduced and a cleaner wafer surface is created.

  • Patent number: 6313964
Abstract: In a disk drive system, a servo controller is operative to perform a process of inhibiting write operations for writing data to tracks of a disk during a head settling period following a track seek operation. During each of a first plurality of sampling intervals transpiring during a first time period, the servo controller determines a present position value indicative of the position of the head during the present sampling interval, and also determines a predicted position value indicative of the position of the head during a subsequent sampling interval. Also during each of the first plurality of sampling intervals, the servo controller determines: whether the present position value is within a first error margin from the center of a target track; and whether the predicted position value is within the first error margin. If the present position value and the predicted position value are both within the first error margin, the servo controller enables write operations.

  • Patent number: 6282046
Abstract: In a disk drive system a servo controller is responsive to a position signal and operative to determine values for servo parameters during each of a plurality of sampling intervals, and is also operative to update a spindle command signal and an actuator command signal during sampling intervals for controlling seeking operations including an acceleration sequence and a deceleration sequence for positioning a head at a target track. The controller is further operative to implement a process of limiting the current drawn by a supply during periods of the deceleration sequence. The spindle command signal is regulated to adjust a spindle current to a reduced value which is less than a nominal value during a spindle energy deferring period while an actuator current exceeds a predetermined threshold value.

  • Patent number: 6281677
Abstract: The present invention is a method for defect locating marking and analysis of thin film hard disks. Initially, the hard disk is disposed in a disk drive and the disk is formatted with sector identification lines and data written into data tracks. During the data writing process a disk surface defect is identified by its sector, track and byte location. The hard disk is then marked such that the defect can be located at a later time. The erased bands aid in later locating the defect. After the defect locating erasures have been completed for each defect found on the disk, the disk is removed from the hard disk drive for further analysis. The disk is then placed on the stage of a microscope and ferromagnetic fluid is applied to the disk in order to make the erased tracks visible. The ferromagnetic fluid is applied out to the end of the track erasure of the track that includes the defect, without application of ferromagnetic fluid to the defect itself.

  • Patent number: 6269400
Abstract: A method for automatic discovery and registration of available agents on a distributed network using universally accepted protocols is disclosed. In particular, the present invention takes advantage of the situation that TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) and HTTP (Hypertext Transport Protocol) are open protocols that have been widely accepted for a variety of applications including the immensely popular and universal Internet as well as intranets. Many devices and/or services from various vendors now conform to TCP/IP and provide an HTTP (web) server with their devices and/or services. The present invention provides a method that generates a list of addresses from a set of given criteria identifying the possible addresses for the available agents, detects for the availability of agents at those addresses, and receives and compiles the returned information (if any) from the agents at the respective addresses.

  • Patent number: 6223287
Abstract: A method for establishing a secured communication channel between a client and a server is disclosed where a program and a set of encryption information for establishing the secured communication channel are delivered from the server to the client. The set of encryption information is compact and can be used to quickly and efficiently encipher and decipher data. In particular, the client requests a program from the server via a first secured communication channel that can be established by a web browser under the HTTPS (Hypertext Transfer Protocol with SSL) protocol. The server in response dynamically generates a set of encryption information and a token identifying this particular set of encryption information. This information is then sent with the requested program. While the program can be written in any language, the language of choice is a platform-independent language such as Java.

  • Patent number: 6173234
Abstract: The method for determining the sufficiency of fluid in a hydrodynamic fluid bearing motor involves making a first determination of a range of fluid bearing fly-heights for motors having a sufficient quantity of fluid within the hydrodynamic fluid bearing, and for motors having an insufficient quantity of fluid within the hydrodynamic fluid bearing. Thereafter, the fly-height of a particular hydrodynamic fluid bearing motors can be determined and compared with the range of hydrodynamic fluid bearing fly-heights to provide a determination of the sufficiency of fluid within the particular hydrodynamic fluid bearing motor. Determining the fly-height of a particular hydrodynamic fluid bearing motor involves the utilization of non-contact displacement probes that generate a first signal indicative of the displacement of a rotating component of the bearing at a time when the component is rotating at a maximum fly-height.
