    Abstract: A marksmanship training system is disclosed as comprising a viewing screen pon which a scenic picture having a predetermined target included therein is projected by a combination motion picture projector and film. A plurality of simulated rifles shoot laser light shots of different colors, respectively, at the target located within the image of said projected motion picture scene. A like plurality of receiver channels respond to the colors of said laser shots respectively, and as a result of being properly synchronized with said projector and film, determine and indicate the number of target "hits" for any given number of shots. A color television camera and video tape recorder monitor training exercises, and a video tape player permits the playback thereof for additional training purposes.

    Abstract: An array of antennas is sequentially sampled by digital commutation means provide a synchronous display of a synthesized antenna array pattern of reception on a cathode ray tube indicator. The commutation means and digital means for generating sine and cosine signals operate from a common oscillator source. Digital means are provided to advance or delay the phase relation of the pattern or of a strobe line with respect to the CRT sweep to effect rotation thereof into azimuthal alignment. Automatic bearing readout is digitally accomplished when alignment is achieved.

    Abstract: A pilot training simulator system is disclosed that simulates a predetermd vehicle and the operational environment pertinent to the vehicle in such manner that the pilot being trained in the system may be responsive to the realistic impressions effected by this combination. Included in the system is a first subsystem for producing a video readout of various terrain and target scenes, a simulated vehicle cockpit second subsystem to which the terrain and target scenes are provided, and a third subsystem for providing a motion picture to the windshield of the simulated vehicle cockpit. A motion generator imparts realistic movements to the first subsystem and simulated vehicle cockpit, and console controls permit the manual operational control of both.

    Abstract: A drugless eye examination system is disclosed that incorporates: an opti system for illuminating the retina of an eye, which has preferably been previously dilated by standard dark room or other drugless procedures, with infrared energy; another optical system for projecting a tiny red spot light on the retina of said eye, for eye-fixation purposes; and still another optical system for permitting an observer to look at and, hence, examine said eye, while it is being held fixed on said red spot light and illuminated by the aforesaid infrared energy. In combination therewith are several other optical systems which permit the taking of color or other photographs of the retina of said eye while it is optionally and timely illuminated with a flash of white light, and for implementing the remote display thereof by television or other projection apparatus.

    Abstract: A surface profile follower and indicator system is disclosed which pneumaally senses and follows the gradients occurring in the surface of a modelboard by means of a pneumatic probe and negative feedback control sub-system which maintains said pneumatic probe at a predetermined distance from the modelboard surface being sensed at any given instant, as the entire profile follower system is moved in such manner as to effect a desired traverse thereof by any suitable carrier vehicle. A probe position pick-off is effectively connected to the aforesaid negative feedback control subsystem and supplies an analog signal to an appropriate readout which, in turn, indicates the position of said pneumatic probe with respect to a predetermined datum, thereby effectively indicating the surface irregularities of the aforesaid modelboard.

    Abstract: An instrument for determining and measuring the "X" and "Y" coordinate dinces a moving vehicle is located from a predetermined reference point at any given instant is disclosed as incorporating a tensioned range measuring wire, an angle sighting arm through which said tensioned range wire operates, range and angle potentiometers effectively connected to said tensioned range wire and angle sighting arm for constantly producing a pair of analog signals that are proportional to range and angular distances to said moving vehicle, respectively. A computer automatically computes the instantaneous "X" and "Y" coordinates of said vehicle with respect to the aforesaid predetermined known reference point from said pair of analog signals. An important and unique brake sub-combination permits the instrument and vehicle whose coordinates are being measured to be held in combined static equilibrium when they are not in use.

    Abstract: A target system is disclosed which is responsive to and indicative of the ts and areas of near miss of laser light pulses that have been shot from a laser weapon aimed at the target system, be it a simulated gun or other device, by a marksman. In addition to the bullseye indicia on the face of the target system, the target system comprises a quadrant arrangement of laser light detectors that are located on the front of the target system in such manner as to permit them to sense the laser light pulses. The detectors are connected in unique combination with data processing channels, programmed timers, a preprogrammed read only memory logic circuit, and an array of lights disposed around and near the perimeter of the target face. The latter mentioned lights light up in accordance with the approximate location of the hits of the laser light pulses relative to the bullseye of the target face, thereby indicating either a hit or the direction of a near miss to the marksman.

    Abstract: A marksman training system is disclosed as including a translucent diffuser arget screen adapted for producing a bright spot on the rear surface of the target screen in response to receiving a laser light beam on the front side of the target screen that was fired from a laser rifle. A television camera scans the rear side of the target screen and produces a composite signal representing the position of the light spot on the rear surface of the target screen, after which the composite signal is broken into its X and Y Cartesian component signals and a video signal by a conventional television signal processor. The X and Y component signals consists of numbers of pulses which are shaped and then uniquely counted by digital counters, stored in registers, and converted to a pair of proportional analog voltage signals by digital-to-analog converters.

    Abstract: A device for visually imaging invisible radiation, having a detector and ht emitting diode circuit interposed between two identical coded rotating discs, wherein the LED provides an output in response to the invisible radiation passed by the first disc and detected by the detector. That portion of LED output passed by the second disc is the output of the system, which output will visually appear as a gray field with a bright spot corresponding in position to the position of the radiation source in the field of view of the system. The appearance of the output results from the patterns of the disc which permits 50% transmissivity at any moment in time when an infrared source is present. The visual appearance resulting from at least one complete rotation of the disc is a field of 25% illumination with bright spots of 50% illumination therein corresponding to bright spots in the field of view.

    Abstract: A signal sampler based on electron ionization principles, and having a cade ray tube including an electron gun and deflection plates, and several semiconductor targets positioned near the face of the CRT. The input signal is applied to the grid of the tube and modulates the intensity of the electron beam emitted by the electron gun. The targets are illuminated by the beam and the current produced is proportional to the electron density. By this method, wherein the beam is swept across the targets, and the input pulse is used to control the intensity of the beam, only one sweep is required to fully investigate the pulse. Investigation is accomplished by detecting and processing the current produced at each target.

    Abstract: A modulated communication system having radio frequency bandwidth reduction in which level sensing circuits at the transmitter control the modulations such that information signals up to a predetermined and selected percent of the modulation level commonly used are transmitted as before, and information signals above that percentage are reduced so that they also begin at the zero amplitude level. That is, once the preselected threshold percentage is reached the signal level is reduced by that threshold amount so that, although all the information in the signal is retained, the signal level is prevented from being greater than the predetermined and selected threshold percentage. At the receiver, the rapid transistions of the transmitted signal between maximum and zero are responded to by a circuit which switches between its low level and high level to reverse the reduction of the high level signals at the transmitter. The present invention is applicable to both amplitude and frequency modulation systems.
