  • Patent number: 8237305
Abstract: Method and apparatus for improving the fuel economy of a vehicle of the type having a vehicle electrical system that includes a generator senses a vehicle voltage of the vehicle electrical system during determined intervals, and supplies an offset current from an external source of electrical energy to the vehicle electrical system in response to the sensing of a vehicle voltage of the vehicle electrical system. In this manner, the electrical power output of the generator, and its effect on fuel consumption, are reduced in response to supplying of the offset current. A source of electrical energy external to the electrical system of the motor vehicle is controlled by an electronic control unit coupled to the source of electrical energy. A power converter receives on and off commands from the electronic control unit in response to vehicle voltage measurements by the electronic control unit.

  • Patent number: 8032422
Abstract: A method of transacting sales over a computerized network correlates in a first database record a first product and a plurality of first purchasers to form a pool; further correlates a plurality of second purchasers; issues an offer to a vendor of the first product; and consummates a transaction between the vendor and the first and second purchasers. The offer is issued to the vendor responsive to a time rate of accumulation of buyers in the pool. A first commitment price for buyers is responsive to historical sales performance of the first product; a price trend of an article similar to the first article; or a price trend of the first article itself over time. A second product desired to be purchased by a first purchaser is defined, and an offer is made to a vendor for the purchase of the second product.

  • Patent number: 7887588
Abstract: A pair of flat support plates in a spinal fusion implant device contact and rest against the softer, central cancellous bone portion of respective endplates of adjacent vertebrae. Each support plate has a front template that is orthogonal to the plate and is bent to communicate with the anterior surface of the hard cortical endplate the vertebrae. A wedge-shaped support strut in a central channel between the two plates is configured to vary the distance between the support plates such that the height of the device proximate the anterior end is greater than the height of the device at the posterior end to maintain the natural lordosis of the spine. Channels formed on either side of the support strut are filled with bone graft material and contact the endplates of the vertebrae through large openings in the flat support plates to facilitate fusion.

  • Patent number: 7827039
Abstract: A system generates one or more of a plurality of wellness programs for a user. Personal data items are entered into a computing system corresponding to a personal profile of the user. A selected one or more of the plurality of wellness programs desired by the user is identified. Selected ones of the plurality of personal data items are then extracted in response to the selected one of the plurality of wellness programs. Then a corresponding plurality of wellness program data elements in response to the selected ones of the plurality of personal data items is determined. The selected plurality of wellness program data elements are then assembled to form a customized wellness program responsive to the step of identifying a selected one of the plurality of wellness programs and the selected ones of the plurality of personal data items. • Patent number: 7779728
Abstract: An arrangement for orienting a device angularly is provided with a back element on which the device to be oriented is installed. A ball and a spherical gear are arranged concentrically. A base portion has a socket that engages with the ball. Also, a motor having a rotatory shaft is installed on the base portion, and a worm drive element is coupled to the rotatory shaft and arranged to engage the spherical gear when the ball and socket are engaged, whereby the spherical gear is urged along the longitudinal axis of the tapered worm drive element and the tapered worm drive element slides along the gear teeth of the spherical gear. The motor enhances the rigidity of the base portion. The worm drive element and the spherical gear disengage in response to the application of a force through the first spherical gear.

  • Patent number: 7648120
Abstract: An iris arrangement has first and second annular carrier elements annular elements coaxially arranged and circumferentially interlocked with one another so as to be independently rotatable. A plurality of iris elements each have a first compliant beam element coupled at a first end thereof to the iris element and at a second end thereof to the first annular carrier element, and a second compliant beam element coupled at a first end thereof to the associated iris element and at a second end thereof to the second annular carrier element. Rotatory motion of the carrier elements relative to each other results in substantially radial displacement of each of the iris elements. The plurality of iris elements communicate with one another when disposed in a radially innermost position. A web covers a region between the plurality of iris elements and the circumference of the first and second annular elements.

  • Patent number: 7547305
Abstract: An arrangement and method of use for supporting a plurality of vertebrae in a cervical column in predetermined spatial relation and for facilitating a spinal fusion procedure. A plurality of templates (12, 14) couple to respectively associated vertebrae at anterior lateral surfaces thereof. Such coupling is effected with fasterners, such as bone screws (19). The templates are slidingly coupled to each other by a coupler assembly (22) whereby they are displaceable along a path over a limited distance that is substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the cervical column. The sliding displacement between the templates is limited by a pair of protruding tongues (27) that extend through elongated apertures (29). The elongated dimension of the apertures determines the extent of sliding travel, which extent is established to accommodate subsidence of the bone fusion and to prevent separation of the sliding elements of the coupler assembly.

  • Patent number: 7431140
Abstract: A combiner conveyor arrangement for conveying articles of product has a first longitudinal conveyor for urging a plurality of the articles of product in parallel in a predetermined direction of travel. First and second bilateral guide ways urge the articles translongitudinally. A switching arrangement selects articles of product from between the first and second bilateral guide ways. A plurality of actuatable fingers block or open the first and second bilateral guide ways synchronously. A switching arrangement directs a product being conveyed to a selectable conveyance pathway, and has a gate that is pivotally displaceable between first and second positions in response to the conveyance of the product. A first spring applies a position restoration force and locking arrangement locks the gate. In a dual gate arrangement, a further pivotable gate has applied thereto a spring that is stronger than the first spring.

  • Patent number: 7417536
Abstract: A system for distinguishing between a first condition corresponding to a living subject being directly in contact with an object of interest, and a second condition corresponding to the absence of contact between the living subject and the object of interest. A transducer, which may be a MEMs sensor, is disposed in predetermined relationship to the object of interest and produces a transducer signal responsive to a pressure wave resulting from the living subject being directly in contact the object of interest. A database stores data corresponding to the first condition and may contain additional data corresponding to the second condition. • Patent number: 7275295
Abstract: A system for assembling a vehicle drive shaft is provided with the steps of installing yokes on respective ends of a drive shaft tube, each yoke having first and second bores therethrough for receiving respective distal ends of respective spider arrangements, and rolling the outer edges of the bores using carbide rollers to urge a portion of the material of the yoke to overlie radially the respectively associated distal end of the spider arrangement. Datums are defined on the yokes and the shaft tube for determining a spatial relationship between the yokes and shaft tube. The rolling of the bore of the yoke is performed while the spider, the bearing caps, and the retention elements are maintained in preload to achieve zero tolerance. Prior to roller forming the outer edge of the bore, the spider arrangement is supported on the true rotating center of the drive shaft tube.
