    Abstract: An anesthesia system for use in MRI suites is provided. The anesthesia system is connected between an anesthesia machine positioned outside the MRI suite and a patient positioned within the MRI suite. The anesthesia machine provides anesthesia gas mixture for anesthetizing the patient. The apparatus has a delivery mechanism for transporting the anesthesia gas mixture from the anesthesia machine to the MRI suite and a mechanism for introducing fresh room air into the anesthesia gas mixture thereby creating a combined gas mixture. A reservoir mechanism receives and stores at least a portion of the anesthesia gas mixture delivered through the delivery mechanism. A mechanism introduces fresh room air into the anesthesia gas mixture thereby creating a combined gas mixture. A ventilation mechanism receives and stores the combined gas mixture.

    Abstract: An apparatus for enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation of pretreated lignocellulosic material, in the form of a tower bioreactor, having mixers to achieve intermittent mixing of the material. Precise mixing of the material is important for effective heat and mass transfer requirements without damaging or denaturing the enzymes or fermenting microorganisms. The pretreated material, generally in the form of a slurry, is pumped through the bioreactor, either upwards of downwards, and is mixed periodically as it passes through the mixing zones where the mixers are located. For a thin slurry, alternate mixing can be achieved by a pumping loop which also serves as a heat transfer device. Additional heat transfer takes place through the reactor heat transfer jackets.

    Abstract: A method for separating lignocellulosic material into (a) lignin, (b) cellulose, and (c) hemicellulose and dissolved sugars. Wood or herbaceous biomass is digested at elevated temperature in a single-phase mixture of alcohol, water and a water-immiscible organic solvent (e.g., a ketone). After digestion, the amount of water or organic solvent is adjusted so that there is phase separation. The lignin is present in the organic solvent, the cellulose is present in a solid pulp phase, and the aqueous phase includes hemicellulose and any dissolved sugars.

A new modified E1 endoglucanase enzyme comprising the catalytic domain of the full size E1 enzyme demonstrates enhanced thermostability and is produced by two methods. The first method of producing the new modified E1 is proteolytic cleavage to remove the cellulose binding domain and linker peptide of the full size E1. The second method of producing the new modified E1 is genetic truncation of the gene encoding the full size E1 so that the catalytic domain is expressed in the expression product.

The invention also teaches a method of texturing the surface of a wafer by forming a porous silicon layer on the surface of a silicon substrate and a method of gettering impurities.
