Abstract: A method for the solventless synthesis of a phthalimide or phthalimide mixture is provided comprising contacting at least one amine reactant and at least one anhydride reactant in a solventless environment at a first temperature sufficient to allow the reactants to at least partially condense; and increasing the temperature to a second temperature sufficient to melt the reaction mixture, thereby allowing the reaction to go essentially to completion and form the reaction product.

Abstract: Carboxy-functionalized polyphenylene ethers containing structural units with a carboxyalkyl group in the 2-position are prepared by redistribution of a polyphenylene ether with a 2-carboxyalkylphenol such as 2-(3-carboxypropyl)phenol (melilotic acid), or by oxidative coupling of a suitable phenol with such a 2-carboxyalkylphenol. The products form compatibilizing copolymers with polymers containing carboxylic acid-reactive functional groups, such as polyesters, polyamides and epoxy resins.
Abstract: Copolyetherimides are prepared by conventional means from hindered diamines such as the isomeric methyl-4,6-diethyl-1,3-phenylenediamines and bis(2-chloro-4-amino-3,5-diethylphenyl)methane. They have unusually high glass transition temperatures.
