Patent number: 3971290Abstract: An explosive linear cutter for cutting materials comprising an explosive rge sheathed in a metal covering, a support for said charge surrounding the covering except for a slot facing the target material to be cut. Separation of the target material is effected by propelling a fragment of metal sheath at high velocity through the slot and into the target upon detonation of said explosive charge to thereby achieve a clean highly directional cut along a desired separation line. This abstract is for the purpose of providing a non-legal brief statement to serve as a searching tool and is not intended to limit the scope of the invention as disclosed herein nor limit the scope or fair meaning of the appended claims.Type: GrantFiled: September 13, 1974Date of Patent: July 27, 1976Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventor: Jim W. Blain

Patent number: 3956748Abstract: A rear looking radar antenna system with a look angle of .+-. 120.degree. installed on a missile launching aircraft which has a conventional front looking antenna with a look-angle of .+-. 60.degree.. This permits a full 360.degree. to be covered. The search and track circuitry of the existing weapon control system is shared between the back and front antennas. As a target passes beyond the look-angle of one of the antennas, the other antenna picks it up. The weapon control circuitry is switched from the one to the other antenna at this time.Type: GrantFiled: December 29, 1972Date of Patent: May 11, 1976Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventor: William H. Rymes

Patent number: 3955201Abstract: Control of the directivity, reflectivity, transparency and tuning of R.F. antenna array is accomplished by building antenna with short dipole segments with a switch between each two segments. The elements are properly connected to exhibit these electrical characteristics by remotely controlling the closing and opening of selected switches. The means for controlling the switches is isolated from the R.F. working frequencies of the antenna.Type: GrantFiled: July 29, 1974Date of Patent: May 4, 1976Inventor: Lloyd R. Crump

Patent number: 3955199Abstract: A doppler/range simulator for use in testing aircraft systems based on the rinciple that an ionized gas absorbs microwave radiation and thus becomes raised to higher energy levels, and when falling back to the original energy state the ionized gas re-radiates the absorbed microwave energy. A frequency control simulates a doppler or velocity signal. A voltage or current control simulates the time delay or altitude range signal. The test set is in the form of a light-weight anechoic chamber lined on the inside with energy absorbant material except for the top. Within the enclosure there are positioned near the open top a plurality of parallel - arranged flurescent tubes adapted to be energized with pulsating d.c. to produce a flow of ions in the tubes which flow from one end of the tube to the other. The tubes are excited in parallel so that the ion flow is always in the same direction.Type: GrantFiled: August 21, 1974Date of Patent: May 4, 1976Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventors: Robert W. Hutzelman, Everitt E. Fairbanks

Patent number: 3955146Abstract: A circuit coupling an antenna to a load uses an integrated circuit differial amplifier with emitter feedback, a buffer amplifier and various adjusting networks to achieve constant output impedance independent of input loading over a wide range of frequencies. The adjusting networks also allow precision gain matching and phase matching between units.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 1972Date of Patent: May 4, 1976Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventor: Richard L. Brennan

Patent number: 3952970Abstract: This invention comprises wrap-around fins for a rocket missile, the fins ng mounted on rods which are borne by a spool-like runner which encircles the nozzle body of a rocket missile. The nozzle body is exteriorly coated with teflon. The spool-like member has a ring-shaped extension on each end, each of which fits into a ring-shaped teflon bearing which, in turn, fits into a slot in a flange on the nozzle body whereby the spool-like member and the fins which are mounted on it are free to rotate relative to the nozzle (and therefore the rocket) body. The interior of the nozzle of the rocket is formed with flutes, the action of the exiting gases on the flutes causing the missile body to rotate in flight.Type: GrantFiled: August 28, 1974Date of Patent: April 27, 1976Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventors: Casimir T. Orzechowski, Nat Seiden

Patent number: 3952662Abstract: A flexible, non-lethal projectile adapted to be fired from a conventional shotgun comprising a pliant body having a plurality of flexible arms. The projectile may be loaded in a shotgun shell casing and fixed therefrom. Upon exit from the gun muzzle the projectile arms extend and provide a large impact area to prevent penetration of the projectile into a target.Type: GrantFiled: May 29, 1974Date of Patent: April 27, 1976Inventor: William D. Greenlees

Patent number: 3952216Abstract: A transducer comprising an array of prestressed, mass-loaded, piezoelectr low-frequency, transducer elements set within a housing, a thin alignment plate bonded to the planar radiating faces of the low-frequency transducer array, a pressure-release sheet bonded to the thin alignment plate, and a high frequency, planar, transducer array bonded to this pressure-release sheet. The high frequency transducer array in combination with its two backing layers forms an integral part of the low frequency transducer array during low frequency operation in addition to providing high frequency transmission and reception during high frequency operation. This transducer construction permits high transmitting and receiving sensitivities at widely separated frequencies.Type: GrantFiled: April 4, 1975Date of Patent: April 20, 1976Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventors: Theodore C. Madison, Harlan G. Frey

Patent number: 3951086Abstract: A floating support structure includes a deck having a plurality of columns igidly affixed thereto. Each column is composed of a fabric covered by a flexible sealant material. Each column has an upper, central, and lower portion. The upper and lower portions are hollow. The upper portion is inflated with air, and the lower portion is filled with a material equivalent to or greater than the weight of the surrounding water. The central portion has a reduced cross-section and connects the upper and lower portion of the column in a manner that allows a degree of universal relative motion between the upper and lower portion of the column. A single column of the type described could be used to attenuate the motion of a spar buoy.Type: GrantFiled: May 31, 1973Date of Patent: April 20, 1976Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventors: Eldon C.
