  • Patent number: 7852822
Abstract: The embodiments utilize OFDM symbols to communicate network IDs. The IDs are encoded into symbols utilizing the network IDs as seeds to scramble respective pilots that are then transmitted by utilizing the symbols. The pilots can be structured into a single OFDM symbol and/or multiple OFDM symbols. The single symbol structure for transmitting the network IDs is independent of the number of network ID bits and minimizes frequency offset and Doppler effects. The multiple symbol structure allows a much coarser timing accuracy to be employed at the expense of transmitting additional symbols. Several embodiments employ a search function to find possible network ID candidates from a transmitted symbol and a selection function to find an optimum candidate from a network ID candidate list.

  • Patent number: 7813453
Abstract: Techniques for performing data detection for a hierarchical coded data transmission are described. In one data detection scheme, log-likelihood ratios (LLRs) for code bits of a first data stream are initially derived based on received symbols for the data transmission. The LLRs for the first data stream are decoded to obtain decoded data, which is re-encoded and remodulated to obtain remodulated symbols. Interference due to the first data stream is estimated based on the remodulated symbols. LLRs for code bits of a second data stream are derived based on the LLRs for the code bits of the first data stream and the estimated interference. The LLRs for the first data stream may be derived from the received symbols in real-time without buffering the received symbols. The LLRs for the second data stream may be derived after the first data stream has been decoded.

  • Patent number: 7590143
Abstract: A wireless telephone without IP capability nonetheless communicates with an infrastructure that uses IP. An infrastructure component assigns the wireless telephone a temporary EP address based on the location of the telephone, and then transforms over-the-air (OTA) voice protocol packets, such as IS-95 packets, from the wireless telephone to IP packets. The IP packets are sent through the infrastructure to another communication device. In turn, IP packets representing voice communication from the communication device are sent through the infrastructure, transformed to OTA packets, and transmitted to the wireless telephone.

  • Patent number: 7039001
Abstract: Techniques to estimate the frequency response of a wireless channel in an OFDM system. In one method, an initial estimate of the frequency response of the wireless channel is obtained for a first group of subbands based on a pilot transmission received via the subbands in the first group. An estimate of the impulse response of the wireless channel is then derived based on the initial frequency response estimate. An enhanced estimate of the frequency response of the wireless channel is then derived for a second group of subbands based on the impulse response estimate. The first and second groups may each include all or only a subset of the usable subbands. Subband multiplexing may be used to allow simultaneous pilot transmissions by multiple terminals on their associated groups of subbands.

  • Patent number: 6813264
Abstract: An SIP server in an IP-based infrastructure supporting wireless telephones determines whether, based on the destination address in a call request, the call is an intrasystem call or an intersystem call. For intrasystem calls the SIP server routes VOIP packets directly between the originating and destination devices. For intersystem calls, however, and in particular encrypted calls, instead of routing the VOIP packets through the public Internet, the SIP server instantiates a circuit-switched call using a local modem bank connected to the PSTN. In this way, quality of service assurance is obtained and latency reduced.

  • Patent number: 6801580
Abstract: Techniques to process a number of “received” symbol streams in a Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) system with multipath channels such that improved performance may be achieved when using successive interference cancellation (SIC) processing. In an aspect, metrics indicative of the quality or “goodness” of a “detected” symbol stream are provided. These metrics consider the frequency selective response of the multipath channels used to transmit the symbol stream. For example, the metrics may relate to (1) an overall channel capacity for all transmission channels used for the symbol stream, or (2) an equivalent signal-to-interference noise ratio (SNR) of an Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) channel modeling these transmission channels. In another aspect, techniques are provided to process the received symbol streams, using SIC processing, to recover a number of transmitted symbol streams.

  • Patent number: 6785823
Abstract: A method and apparatus for allowing a mobile station in a wireless network to perform network authentication in association with mobile packet data services. The packet data serving node (PDSN) does not authenticate the mobile station with an authentication server prior to sending a CHAP success message. Rather, a mobile station is authenticated via an authentication server after the PDSN receives an IPCP message indicating whether the mobile station desires to use Mobile IP in the current session. If the mobile station desires to use Mobile IP, the PDSN uses authentication techniques in accordance with Mobile IP protocols. In the preferred embodiment, if the mobile station does not desire to use Mobile IP, the PDSN authenticates the mobile station querying an authentication server with the buffered contents of a previously received CHAP challenge response.

  • Patent number: 6782280
Abstract: Rapid text entry using a wireless telephone is facilitated by correlating at least some of the letters represented by a number key to a two-key combination, namely, the number key and an indicator key such as the star key (which, when depressed along with a number key, can indicate the second letter on the number key) and the pound key (which, when depressed with a number key, can indicate the third letter on the key). Thus, at most two key strokes are required to positively indicate any letter on a numbers-only keypad.

  • Patent number: 6771776
Abstract: A method and apparatus for re-synchronizing a stream cipher during soft handoff. Transmitted quasi-secret keying information is used with a secret key to reinitialize a stream cipher generator located in a base station and a stream cipher generator located in a travelling mobile station. Since the quasi-secret keying information is uniquely determined according to each base station in the wireless telephone system, a base station's quasi-secret keying information and a shared secret key can also be used to create a new key. Thus, as the mobile station travels from one base station to another base station, a unique new key is generated for each base station.

  • Patent number: 6636568
Abstract: Techniques to determine data rates for a number of data streams transmitted via a number of transmission channels (or transmit antennas) in a multi-channel (e.g., MIMO) communication system. In one method, the “required” SNR for each data rate to be used is initially determined, with at least two data rates being unequal. The “effective” SNR for each data stream is also determined based on the received SNR and successive interference cancellation processing at the receiver to recover the data streams. The required SNR for each data stream is then compared against its effective SNR. The data rates are deemed to be supported if the required SNR for each data stream is less than or equal to its effective SNR. A number of sets of data rates may be evaluated, and the rate set associated with the minimum received SNR may be selected for use for the data streams.

  • Patent number: 6600836
Abstract: A system and method for quality-based compression utilizing adaptively sized blocks and sub-blocks of discrete cosine transform coefficient data and a quality based quantization scale factor is claimed. A block size assignment element in an encoder element selects the block or sub-block of an input block of pixel data to be processed. Blocks with variances larger than a threshold are subdivided, while blocks with variances smaller than threshold are not subdivided. A transform element transforms the pixel values of the selected blocks into the frequency domain. The frequency domain values are quantized either on a block by block basis or a frame by frame basis utilizing a scale factor that correlates with the quality of the image. The data is then serialized and coded in preparation for transmission.
