  • Patent number: 6012640
Abstract: A method and apparatus employs a production system-like rule based routine to process signals, such as reflectance signals produced from machine-readable symbols (e.g., bar code symbols). Relevant features data is extracted from each peak or valley in the signal, such as width, height, and relative size. The routine then uses the extracted data for each peak and valley with a set of rules to refine the reflectance signals. Under one or more iterations, the routine selects and resolves conflicting rules and applies resulting rules to process the signal. The processed signal can then be more readily decoded. The routine preferably processes a reflectance signal in portions, such as on a codeword-by-codeword basis. Under an alternative embodiment, a fuzzy inference engine provides sets of values for height, width and relative size. Therefrom rules are applied to determine a size of each peak and valley in the signal.

  • Patent number: 6014304
Abstract: The invention relates to a method of and an apparatus for controlling a plurality of mutually communicating actuators, each of the actuators having at least one signal sensor for determining the state of the actuator, with at least one control apparatus generating, in accordance with the state of at least one of the actuators, control signals used for driving controllers of the actuators. In order to avoid overheating of the individual actuators or the control apparatus in case of a large number of actuations by a user, it is provided to determine the temperature of the actuators and the control apparatus cooperating with the actuators and, in case a predetermined temperature threshold value is exceeded in an actuator or the control apparatus, to generate a control signal for non-driving the controllers of the actuators until the excessive temperature detected drops below the temperature threshold value by a defined temperature value.

  • Patent number: 6011742
Abstract: A single pull-up circuit is shared between a redundant row antifuse cell, and a redundant column antifuse cell. Additionally, a single selection circuit is shared between the two antifuse cells. A row selection signal supplied thereto selects the antifuse cell for the redundant row, while a column selection signal selects the antifuse cell for the redundant column. A small channel length transistor is employed within the latch circuit. As a result, the latch can quickly pull up a value when the antifuse cell is not blown, and quickly latch that value within the latch since an RC time constant of the latch is decreased. A pulsed pull-up signal having a very short duration is employed to enable the latch. Since the pulsed pull-up signal has a short duration, a high voltage supply V.sub.CC is provided through the latch and a blown antifuse cell to ground for only a short duration, thereby minimizing the possibility of such a low resistance current path from damaging the circuitry.

  • Patent number: 6011951
Abstract: A technique for sharing radio frequency spectrum between multiple satellite communication systems. A first and a second satellite communication system each contain a plurality of satellites in a plurality of non-geostationary (non-GSO) Earth orbits. Each of the plurality of non-GSOs has a predefined orbital plane. Within each orbital plane, satellites of the first and second satellite communication systems are alternating, such that each orbital plane contains satellites from each of the satellite systems. In this manner, it is possible to achieve satisfactory discrimination between satellites and Earth-based stations. The Earth-based station of each communication system will communicate with the closest satellite of its respective communication system.

  • Patent number: 6010051
Abstract: An apparatus for releasably retaining a recreational board, such as a skateboard, snowboard or skis, is shown and described. In one embodiment, the apparatus has a main body with a front portion to which one or more straps is attached, and a rear portion to which a pair of opposing flaps is attached. The flaps extend from the main body such that the second flap overlaps the first flap when the two are wrapped in opposite directions around the recreational board. The overlapping surfaces of the two flaps are secured together to releasably retain the board. A connector is fixed to the second flap and extends from the rear portion of the carrier to the front portion of the carrier where it terminates in a grip. A force exerted on the grip subjects the connector to tension, causes the second flap to be separated from the first flap, and releases the board. In another embodiment, the connector extends through apertures in the front and rear portions of the main body.

  • Patent number: 6007368
Abstract: A telecommunications connector includes a body having a first end to mate with a mating connector and a second end having an aperture. A plurality of connector elements have a connection portion to make electrical contact with individual wires from wire cables. In an exemplary embodiment, the individual wires are in the form of twisted pair cables. The connector elements also include a terminating portion to make electrical contact with the mating connector, and an elongated intermediate portion coupling the corresponding connection and terminating portions. The elongated intermediate portion minimizes the overall surface area of the electrical contacts thereby reducing the capacitance between individual ones of the connector elements. In addition, the connector elements are mounted in a low dielectric constant material to further reduce capacitance between individual ones of the connector elements.
