  • Patent number: 6052194
Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling the color of an article such as a paper web includes performing a comparison between target and measured reflectance values in numerous wavelength bands spanning the visible spectrum. The comparison quantifies correspondingly numerous errors that are modified by a non-linear operation, such as squaring, and then added together. The resulting sum is minimized by individually adjusting the application of a number of colorants to the article. The number of wavelength bands is greater than the number of colorants. This avoids metameric effects which are common in conventional systems that rely on three color space coordinates such as Hunter Laboratories L, a, b; C.I.E. L*, a*, b*; chromaticity x, y, z; and tristimulus X, Y, Z. Colorant response simulators enable the effects of changes in application of colorants to be tested while the actual application of colorants to the article is unchanged.

  • Patent number: 6016734
Abstract: A food slicing machine including a housing and a disc-shaped knife which is mounted for rotation on the housing. An adjusting device moves a stop plate relative to the cutting plane of the knife to set the slice thickness. A food carriage reciprocates adjacent the knife and is pivotable between a slice cutting position and a fully retracted position. A locking disc is connected to the adjusting device and includes a slot of uniform width extending from the periphery in a generally radial direction. A locking element which is slightly smaller than the slot is arranged to enter the slot responsive to pivoting of the carriage out of the slice cutting position. Upon setting the adjusting device to a slice thickness of zero, the slot is aligned with the locking element. A relatively small amount of pivoting of the carriage from the slice cutting position toward the fully retracted position causes the locking element to enter the slot and prevent substantial rotation of the adjusting device in either direction.

  • Patent number: 5976780
Abstract: A macroencapsulation device for somatic cells using ultrapurified Na alginate and polysulfone hollow fibers of 30 kDa molecular weight cutoff. Ultrapurified Na alginate material is used which has a high `G` content, low endotoxin content, low divalent metal toxins and low protein impurities. Islet cells prior to being encapsulated, are irrigated with Hank's modified solution (without Ca and Mg) containing gentamycin, vancomycin and amphotericin B and then passed through a leukoabsorb filter to reduce the donor antigen load of passenger leukocytes and to reduce the bioburden of microorganisms including viruses. Encapsulation is done in RPMI 1640 tissue culture fluid containing necessary nutritional supplements and ATP source of energy. The open ends of the fiber are covered with a porous membrane. To further improve biocompatibility, the outer wall of the polysulfone is lightly gelled with alginate gel.

  • Patent number: 5943966
Abstract: A furniture system having a countertop midsection, two tower units with gliding base, a rigid screen, and flexible partitions. Using the tower unit shaft's neck, a pivoting connection is used to provide the flexibility of arrangement. The arrangement allows for any angle to be formed between each and every component part of the furniture system without disassembling furniture. A layering design of the tower units allows for multiple configurations. It also allows each component to operate independently of each other. Flexible partitions close the openings between rigid screens and change the configuration along with the system. Furthermore, any component can be upgraded to provide different functions or assume different shapes or forms. An example is the replacement of the shaft by a cage. This allows for a file cabinet inserts or another bulky item to be inserted without eliminating the function of the shaft's neck required to provide the pivoting point for all components.

  • Patent number: 5837444
Abstract: An apparatus for collecting a subpopulation of cells larger than a predetermined size from a collagenase distended organ by circulating fluid through a closed loop system. The closed loop system includes a digesting chamber to liberate cells from the organ, a cell collection chamber, and a filter adjacent the cell collection chamber for retaining cells larger than the predetermined size. The circulating fluid transports liberated cells through the cell collection chamber to the filter. Subsequently, the cells on the filter are flushed back into the cell collection chamber by a density medium. A tube then withdraws the desired subpopulation of cells from the cell collection chamber.

  • Patent number: 5779073
Abstract: A cap for the neck of a corked glass bottle constructed as a single piece by stamping a thin sheet of material having one or more layers. The sheet has at least one gas-impervious layer. The cap includes a planar portion, the lower surface of which contacts and remains unadhered to the upper surface of the neck. Depending from the periphery of the planar portion is an annular skirt. A heat-sensitive adhesive adheres the inner surface of the skirt to the annular outer surface of the neck upon heating. In a second embodiment, the adhesive layer covers the entire inner and lower surfaces of the cap. A disk is adhered to the inner surface to prevent the upper surface of the neck from contacting the adhesive.

  • Patent number: 5747744
Abstract: In a weighing device for the point-of-sale of a retail outlet with a reading device installed therein, the following measures are taken: Only a single weighing cell in the form of a bending bar is provided and as far as possible is disposed laterally offset in a stationary manner on the scales stand. The support for a load plate of the weighing device is designed to be intrinsically rigid and in the vicinity of its one edge is rigidly connected to the bending bar such that a window provided in the load plate and in the support is held cantilevered over the scales stand. On the scales stand the reading device lies on the one side and an electronic evaluation circuit lies on the other side of the bending bar. The electronic evaluation circuit with microcomputer and analog-to-digital converter carries out an automatic weight determination and price calculation of the weighed article.

  • Patent number: 5665925
Abstract: A device for performing a weight measurement in centrifuges which serve to process chemical substances of different weights and in which fluctuating gas pressures cause different interfering forces which have an interfering effect on the weight measurement. The centrifuge is mounted so as to swivel in a vertical plane, a force measuring element senses the weight-dependent swivel movements of the machine, and a compensation means equalizes the interfering forces caused by the fluctuating gas pressures such that the weight measurement remains unaffected hereby. The compensation means comprises a sensor sensing the gas pressure in the centrifuge, this sensor correspondingly correcting a weight display as a function of changes sensed in the gas pressure.
