Abstract: A process for purifying anhydrous aluminum chloride containing organochlorine impurities, comprising contacting said impure aluminum chloride with a bath containing at least one chloroaluminate for a time sufficient to remove said impurities therefrom and recovering the purified aluminum chloride in the vapor phase of the chloroaluminate bath.

Abstract: A test card incorporates a colorimetric indicator test to determine the presence of a minute amount of a specific substance in a liquid medium. The test card includes top and bottom sheets adhesively secured to an intermediate frame member which, together with the top and bottom sheets, defines a filter chamber having a flat filter therein which incorporates a test portion. The test portion of the filter has a binding substrate to which antibodies of the specific substance have been bound. This binding substrate is in communication with a test port. In the method of the invention a substance to be tested is administered through the test port and contains an unknown amount of antigen. After the sample is administered an aqueous solution of enzyme labelled antigen is administered and, subsequently, a liquid substrate is added to cause a color change in the filter below the test portion inversely proportional to the amount of antigen contained in the sample administered at the test port.

Abstract: The process for the manufacture of cathodes suitable for use in electrolysis comprising depositing onto an electrically conductive substrate at least one layer of said Group VIII metal salts, one of which is a platinum group metal and then subjecting the whole to a heat treatment to oxidize said salts to the oxide form.

Abstract: A lining for use in an aluminum reverberatory furnace or the like for heating molten aluminum in a cavity which cavity is formed by a roof, sidewalls and a bottom which are to be lined with refractory materials. The lining comprises a band of hot face refractory material around the interior periphery of the cavity sidewalls for contacting molten aluminum in the furnace at the normal operating levels of the upper surface of the molten aluminum. A layer of backup refractory material is interposed between the furnace shell and the band of hot face refractory material.

Abstract: A transparent polyamide containing terephthalic acid radicals or radicals of the mixture of terephthalic and isophthalic acids and a cycloaliphatic diamine radical and having the chain formations: ##STR1## in which: y.sub.1 +y.sub.2 is between 10 and 200 with y.sub.1 /(y.sub.1 +y.sub.2)>0.5;m, p, m' and p' are whole numbers equal to or greater than zero, such that: ##EQU1## is between 0.5 and 10, taken statistically over the marcomolecule; Z and Z' are the same or different and are either a polymethylene segment --(CH.sub.2)--.sub.

Abstract: A polyfluoroalkylthiomethyl compound of the formula:R.sub.f (CH.sub.2).sub.m --S--CH.sub.2 --Ain which R.sub.f is a straight-chain or branched perfluoroalkyl radical containing from 2 to 16 carbon atoms, m is an integer from 1 to 4, and A is a hydroxyl group, a chlorine or bromine atom, an ammonium group derived from a secondary or tertiary amine, a phosphonium group, or an ionic or nonionic group --Q--(CH.sub.2).sub.n --Z, in which Q is an oxygen or sulphur atom, n the number 0, 1 or 2, and Z an unsubstituted or substituted alkyl, aryl or alkylaryl radical. The invention also comprises the method of making such compound and the use thereof as a surface-active agent.

Abstract: A sizing agent for paper consisting essentially of a latex consisting essentially of at least one diurethane dispersed in an aqueous medium, said diurethane being of the formula: ##STR1## in which: (a) R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.5 and R.sub.6 are each alkyl radicals and at least one of them possesses a minimum of 7 carbon atoms;(b) R.sub.7 and x represent, respectively, the cationic and anionic portions of the quaternizing agent R.sub.7 x;(c) R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are selected from C.sub.2 -C.sub.4 alkylene radicals or polyalkoxylated radicals of a degree of polycondensation of between 1 and 4; and(d) Y is ##STR2## The process of making the sizing agent and using it to size paper are also disclosed.

Abstract: A sealing apparatus for use in a compressor suction or pressure plate valve having a seat member with a plurality of fluid passage ports therethrough. The sealing apparatus comprises a movable plastic plate member having a like plurality of sealing members for juxtaposed sealing engagement with the plurality of fluid passage ports and at least one projection integrally formed on at least one of the sealing members and extending outwardly from the plate member in a direction away from the seat member for receiving a resilient flat spring member urging the plate member against and sealing the fluid passage ports.

Abstract: A polymeric decontamination composition comprising a polymeric reaction product resulting from the reaction of a polyvinylbenzyl halide and a monomeric amine admixed with an alkali metal hydroxide solution capable of swelling said polymeric reaction product and the method of making the composition.

Abstract: In the process of producing hydroxylated polybutadiene from a diene monomer in the presence of hydrogen peroxide and a solvent, wherein the solvent is recovered by distillation for reuse; after separation of the hydroxylated polybutadiene from mixture containing such solvent and reaction impurities, the improvement comprising subjecting said mixture to the action of an alkali metal hydroxide or a hydrazine prior to distillation.

Abstract: A polymeric chemical warfare agent decontamination composition comprising a polymeric quaternary pyridinium salt resulting from the reaction of a polyvinylbenzyl salt and a di(C.sub.l -C.sub.n alkyl) aminopyridine wherein n is 20 or higher, and the method of making such pyridinium salt is disclosed wherein the reaction product is a polymer of the formula: ##STR1## wherein R is a C.sub.1 to C.sub.20 or higher alkyl group.

Abstract: Encapsulated corn kernels consisting essentially of a kernels of corn suitable for popping coated over at least a portion of the outer surface thereof with an edible oleaginous substance or edible wax and thereover with an outer shell of an edible polymer. The process of making such encapsulated kernel; and microwaveable corn products consisting essentially of the encapsulated corn kernels in a microwaveable package.

Abstract: A self-contained liquid composition for use in making fingerprints comprising the reaction product of at least one leuco or non-leuco chromogenic compound and at least one color-developing substance in a liquid vehicle that is a solvent for said chromogenic compound and reaction product and a solvent or dispersant for said color-developing substance. The method of fingerprinting and a fingerprinting system utilizing the liquid composition are also disclosed.

Abstract: An improved slurry plow which includes provisions for both vertical and horizontal adjustment, characterized in that the plow includes a housing, a telescoping lower member which is spring loaded to retain the lower surface of the plow in slidable contact with an associated moving belt, and further including provisions to permit adjustment of the pressure exerted by the sliding contact and to provide vertical adjustment of the telescoping member.

Abstract: The invention relates to amine salts of phosphorous acid having a structure of the s-triazine, 1,2,4-triazole, benzimidazole, heptazine, pyrimidine, or piperazine type which may be combined with a polyhydroxylated compound as fireproofing agents for plastics, particularly polyamides and polyolefins, the process of fireproofing said plastics, and the resultant fireproofed plastics.

Abstract: An refractory plastic comprising a refractory aggregate and a bonding and plasticizing agent consisting essentially of a powdered novolak resin and a solvent; said agent being present in an amount sufficient to plasticize said refractory.

Abstract: An electrosurgical knife includes a stainless steel blade whose surface is abraded or etched, a first coat of primer material applied over the blade, where the surface of the primer material is also abraded or etched, and a second coat of non-stick fluorinated hydrocarbon material applied over the coat of primer material to cover the primer material, for a total thickness of about three mils. The stainless steel blade is completely covered by the coatings but the thickness of the coatings is not so great as to prevent conduction of radio-frequency electrical energy from the blade through the coatings to tissue being cut.

Abstract: A refractory composition comprising a fused silica composition comprising a silica compound and a binder and for each 100 parts by weight of said fused silica composition from about 3 to 15 parts by weight of alumina-silica based hollow microspheres.

Abstract: A process for manufacturing thermoplastic polymer films by coextrusion comprising coextruding by blow extrusion at least two thermoplastic polymers, one of the polymers being a semi-crystalline fluid polymer, the other a thermoplastic polymer incompatible with and with no adhesive affinity for the semi-crystalline fluid polymer and possessing sufficient extrudate strength to support the semi-crystalline polymer, cooling the coextrudate, separation of the resulting films, and recovering at least the semi-crystalline thermoplastic polymer film thus formed in the form of a film of substantially uniform thickness.
