Abstract: A method for extraction of zinc values from an aqueous alkaline solution of zinc, especially a solution obtained by the stripping of a galvanized coating from a ferrous metal product e.g. steel, or from electric arc furnace dust. The method comprises subjecting the aqueous alkaline solution to solvent extraction using an organic solution of an oxine i.e. an organic extractant containing an 8-hydroxyquinoline group, and separating the organic solution from aqueous alkaline solution. Zinc values are recovered from the organic solution e.g. by stripping with acid and subjecting the resultant aqueous solution containing zinc values for recovery of zinc e.g. to electrowinning or to precipitation of zinc carbonate. The method may be used in the preparation of galvanized steel for recycle to a steel manufacturing plant, with recovery of zinc and for recovery of zinc values from electric arc furnace dust.

Abstract: Strains of Leishmania and other macrophage-infecting parasites are provided which express the GM-CSF gene which are useful in treating hosts infected by the parasite and in protecting hosts against disease caused by infection of hosts by parasites. The parasites are reduced in their ability to infect or survive in macrophages and hence are attenuated. At least one gene of the parasite contributing to the virulence thereto may be functionally disabled. The attenuated strains may be used for administration to a host (a) to treat a host infected by Leishmania or (b) to confer protection against disease caused by a virulent Leishmania strain, or as a diagnostic reagent.

Abstract: Protective high molecular weight (HMW) proteins are produced recombinantly by expression from E. coli by using a promoter effective in E. coli and a nucleic acid molecule which contains a modified operon of a non-typeable strain of Haemophilus. The modified operon contains the portion only of the A region which encodes the mature HMW protein and the complete B and C regions of the operon. Enhanced levels of expression of the HMW proteins can be achieved by including the E. coli cer gene, a further copy of the portion of the A region of the operon encoding the mature protein or both in the expression vector. Nucleotide and deduced amino acid sequences of the hmw1 and hmw2 genes and HMW1 and HMW2 proteins, respectively of several non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae strain have been identified.

Abstract: Method and apparatus are described for determining respiratory system resistance (R) in a patient receiving gas from a ventilator. A negative pulse in the pressure and/or flow output of the ventilator during selected inflation cycles is generated and Paw, {dot over (V)} and V are measured at a point (To) near the beginning of the pulse, at a point (T1) near the trough of the negative pulse and at a point (T?1) preceding To. The value of R is calculated from the difference between Paw, {dot over (V)} and V at To and at T1 and where the change in patient generated pressure (Pmus) in the interval To?T1 is estimated by extrapolation from the different between Paw, {dot over (V)} and V and To and at T?1, in accordance with Equation 8.
Abstract: Nucleic acid, including DNA, for immunization to generate a protective immune response in a host, including humans, to a major outer membrane protein of a strain of Chlamydia, preferably contains a nucleotide sequence encoding a MOMP or a MOMP fragment that generates antibodies that specifically react with MOMP and a promoter sequence operatively coupled to the first nucleotide sequence for expression of the MOMP in the host. The non-replicating vector may be formulated with a pharmaceutically-acceptable carrier for in vivo administration to the host.

Abstract: A endotracheal tube for patient ventilation is modified to permit measurement of pressure at the patient trachea by providing a chamber in the end of the ET tube to be located in the patient, airway. This chamber has a highly pliant external wall with a degree of redundancy and is connected to a pressure measuring device exterior of the patient by a lumen in the wall of the ET tube. In addition, apparatus for controlling airway pressure during exhalation comprises valve means connected via a first inlet to an exhalation tube from a patient airway, connected to a source of negative pressure through an outlet and having a second inlet with a variable flow control means for controlling the flow of gas therethrough. Gas pressure is controlled within the valve by varying the pressure gradient between the upstream and downstream sides of the second inlet so that it equals the pressure gradient between the patient airway and the downstream side of the second inlet.
