  • Patent number: 4644717
Abstract: A curtain wall drainage system for horizontal mullions comprising a flexible, conforming flap member disposed in flush engagement against a weep hole formed in the mullion. The flap permits egress of water infiltrated therein while preventing infusion of water or air turbulence within the mullion from wind loading against the curtain wall. An upper portion of the flap member secured to the outer weep hole surface for permitting pivotal movement therefrom and the passage of water through the weep hole and beneath the flap member. The flap member is constructed of sufficiently resilient and conforming material to permit the presence of a stream of water beneath the flap member from the weep hole to the lower end portion thereof and the creation of a capillary action therein for urging water contained within the mullion downwardly beneath the flap member for discharge from the curtain wall structure.

  • Patent number: 4621475
Abstract: A structural strut having at least one surface of generally U-shaped cross section and being formed with a pair of upstanding side walls having opposed tapers. The side wall tapers of the strut shift or skew the neutral axis of the member in proportion to the relative side wall dimensions. In this manner, the strut may be used to comprise a load bearing member having a neutral axis selectively slanted to a position maximizing structural loading efficiency and interconnection. The ends of the strut are further formed of substantially planar construction for flat abutment and welded attachment to cross members of a truss thereby eliminating conventional gusset plates. The structural strut may also be constructed from a pair of such U-shaped channel sections secured back-to-back with the tapering flanges complementally positioned opposite one another for selectively shifting the neutral axis of the resulting I-beam.

  • Patent number: 4610139
Abstract: A winch apparatus, such as draw works used for raising and lowering drill pipe into a borehole, in which motive power is provided by a hydraulic motor. A multi-stage rotary disk valve is interposed between the fluid supply pump and the hydraulic motor to provide a variable fluid flow rate and thereby to provide means for variably controlling the speed and direction of rotation of the draw works. A directional control disk is provided in the valve to provide reverse flow to prevent cavitation when the drill pipe is in free fall into the borehole, which drives the hydraulic motor in reverse. The directional control disk also controls the entry into the reverse flow of additional fluid provided by a high volume, low pressure auxiliary pump.

  • Patent number: 4604247
Abstract: Metal vapor-liquid contact plates disposed in face-to-face contact with respective corrugations inclined to the horizontal across an open notional plane. The metal packing is disposed within a vapor-liquid contact column for the purpose of bringing about mass and heat transfer between liquid and vapor passing in opposite directions therethrough. The body portion of each metal plate comprises metal that has been slitted to provide both surfaces thereof with a very large number of apertures with little wasted material. The metal lands defining the apertures are, moreover, twisted and angulated. The apertures in the plates also trap liquid and expose it to the vapor stream on both sides of the metal affording self-spreading of the liquid and turbulent vapor flow therethrough. In this manner, the assembly affords optimal pressure drop characteristics, surface to vapor passage area ratio, and vapor-liquid distribution characteristics.

  • Patent number: 4603606
Abstract: A unidirectional drive tool cartridge for use as a torque transmitting device which includes a housing within which is mounted a unidirectional continuous clutch and drive shaft assembly. The drive shaft is carried within a bearing member located within a clutch. The bearing member has a central opening configured to receive a shoulder portion of the drive shaft so that the drive shaft may be slidably moved along an axis of its rotation within the bearing element and may be rotatably drive by the bearing element around the axis of rotation. Front and back faces of the housing are provided to constrain the longitudinal movement of the drive shaft therein. By virtue of the operation of the unidirectional clutch, the drive shaft may be driven in one direction on rotation of the head and is not driven in an opposite rotation of the head. The drive shaft is selectively movable within the housing to extend from either rotational direction, depending upon the direction of extension of the drive shaft therefrom.

  • Patent number: 4597916
Abstract: Process tower vapor-liquid contact method and apparatus comprising stacks of corrugated contact plates having perforated lamella disposed therebetween. The corrugated plates are disposed in face-to-face contact with respective corrugations inclined to the horizontal and separated one from the other by a perforated sheet. The assembly affords optimal pressure drop characteristics, surficial area, vapor passage area, and vapor-liquid distribution characteristics with maximum efficiency. The sandwiched plate separating adjacent corrugated contact plates greatly increases the mass and heat transfer between the liquid and vapor phases passing thereacross by effectively segregating opposed corrugated channels and establishing a plurality of vapor-liquid contact areas positioned for engaging both vapor and liquid flow in opposed directions through the oppositely inclined corrugations of adjacent plates.

  • Patent number: 4568260
Abstract: A texturing system for brick fabrication comprising a plurality of slapping members mounted to at least one transmission belt for engaging individual edges of bricks within an array of bricks. The bricks are positioned beneath the slapping members while in a deformable state. An array of staggered lifting plates are positioned beneath the bricks for exposing opposite edge portions thereof to the slapping elements. The transmission belt is driven transversely to the movement of the bricks array for imparting the texturing force of the slapping elements to the underlying bricks along upstanding edge portions thereof. A series of three transmission belts are preferably used above a staggered pattern of two plate rows for treating the longitudinal sides of all bricks within an array. In this manner, an improved rough, used brick appearance may be imparted to individual brick elements while disposed in a common fabrication array.

  • Patent number: 4547049
Abstract: A method and apparatus for a multi-element lens system which combines pre-selected radial differences of separate ophthalmic lenses with non-mating curvatures into a single, flexibly conforming laminated unit. The system comprises a primary lens element of structural rigidity and at least one additive lens having an initially non-mating curvature formed of a thin, pliable plastic for providing a complemental ophthalmic correction or addition when flexibly conformed and bonded thereto. The assembled lens is therein capable of providing virtually any optical correction or addition by the determination and application of the appropriate additive lens having the requisite radial difference. In this manner, the ophthalmic inventory of practitioners can be reduced by providing a series of additive lenses in graduated radial differences which may be bonded to any of a stock of ophthalmic lens configuration with different initial curvatures.

  • Patent number: 4527435
Abstract: An improved proportional gas flow sampler having a combined arrangement of channeled plugs in a main flow line and a sample flow line for obtaining proportionally constant flow samples. The channels in the main line plug have relatively equivalent hydraulic diameters and a substantially greater average cross-sectional area than the channels in the sample line plug. The hydraulic diameter of the sample line plug channels are, however, within an order of magnitude of the hydraulic diameter of the main line plug channels and in certain configurations, relatively equivalent. The pressure drop across the main line and sample line plugs is held constant to impose an equivalent flow impedance, even with proportionally greater flow through the main line plug. In this manner, the arrangement extracts a fixed fraction of the flow into the sample line regardless of overall flow rate.
