Patent number: 6150086Abstract: Multiple micro-encapsulations of a high concentration oleophilic substance using heat to set the primary particle renders the composition suitable for the production of free-flowing powders or beadlets. Microencapsulation involves forming an emulsion out of the oleophilic substance and a polymer, and then use heat setting and/or cross-linking the polymer encapsulates the oleophilic composition. This process is then repeated with a second polymer or third polymer, and with or without cross-linked via the same or different mechanism to further protect the oleophilic substance.Type: GrantFiled: November 12, 1999Date of Patent: November 21, 2000Assignee: Roche Vitamins Inc.Inventors: Stasia Boyle, Kuei-Tu Chang

Patent number: 6150561Abstract: A widely applicable process for the manufacture of carotenoids by a Wittig reaction comprises carrying out the Wittig reaction in a polar reaction medium in a manner such that neither the reactants nor the thus-manufactured carotenoid are significantly dissolved in the reaction medium. An especially suitable reaction medium is a polar, toxicologically harmless solvent which remains monophasic on the addition of water in an amount up to about 30 vol. % and which permits the triarylphosphine oxide which is formed to dissolve well. Lower alcohols and acetone, as sole solvents or as mixtures with one another and/or with water, are especially suitable as the polar reaction medium. This process permits the use of much more concentrated reaction mixtures, simplifies the regeneration of the solvent and generally the reaction procedure, and avoids toxicologically objectionable solvents such as halogenated hydrocarbons.Type: GrantFiled: September 4, 1998Date of Patent: November 21, 2000Assignee: Roche Vitamins Inc.Inventors: Paul Kreienbuhl, Peter Rudin, Werner Rudolph

Patent number: 6146860Abstract: A process for producing L-ascorbic acid (vitamin C) from 2-keto-L-gulonic acid or D-erythorbic acid from 2-keto-D-gluconic acid by contacting 2-keto-L-gulonic acid or 2-keto-D-gluconic acid, respectively, in solution with a lactonase, particularly one belonging to the enzyme class EC 3.1.1.x, according to the classification of Enzyme Nomenclature. The solvent for this reaction can be water, an aqueous alcohol, a non-alcoholic organic solvent or a mixture of an aqueous alcohol and a non-alcoholic organic solvent. The contacting is generally performed in a temperature range of 0.degree. C. to 120.degree. C. and a pH range of 1.5 to 12. In each case the starting material can be in the form of the free acid, the sodium salt, or the calcium salt. The so-produced vitamin C has very well known uses, and the alternatively produced D-erythorbic acid is useful as an antioxidant for food additives.Type: GrantFiled: January 18, 2000Date of Patent: November 14, 2000Assignee: Roche Vitamins Inc.Inventors: Akira Asakura, Tatsuo Hoshino, Tatsuya Kiyasu, Masako Shinjoh
