  • Patent number: 7483465
Abstract: A near field optical apparatus comprising a conductive sheet or plane having an aperture therein with the conductive plane including at least one protrusion which extends into the aperture. The location, structure and configuration of the protrusion or protrusions can be controlled to provide desired near field localization of optical power output associated with the aperture. Preferably, the location, structure and configuration of the protrusion are tailored to maximize near field localization at generally the center of the aperture. The aperture preferably has a perimeter dimension which is substantially resonant with the output wavelength of the light source, or is otherwise able to support a standing wave of significant amplitude. The apparatus may be embodied in a vertical cavity surface emitting layer or VCSEL having enhanced nearfield brightness by providing a conductive layer on the laser emission facet, with, a protrusion of the conductive layer extending into an aperture in the emission facet.

  • Patent number: 7394312
Abstract: The present invention is directed to an amplifier, which is able to re-configure its internal protection circuits based on an output signal level. This allows the amplifier to apply the best protection level to the present operational condition. The protection level or threshold for protecting the amplifier is dynamically adjusted to a lower threshold level, thereby making it more sensitive in certain operating scenarios. In one embodiment of the present invention, a first current protection threshold is used to operate an amplifier in a first state. If an event occurs, the amplifier protection circuit is re-configured and the amplifier continues to operate with a second protection threshold in a second state.

  • Patent number: 7342852
Abstract: The present invention obtains a more optimal focus in at least two dimensions (such as axial and radial dimensions) by setting or keeping a focus in at least a first dimension (such as both axial and radial dimensions) and detecting and adjusting the focus in a second dimension (such as radial dimension) so that it can be brought to the same focal plane as the focus for the at least first dimension (such as both axial and radial dimension). An actuator lens assembly is used to continually adjust the focus for either primarily the first dimension or primarily the second dimension, using a feedback loop. In one embodiment of the present invention, certain photocell(s), (such as photocells E and F that are normally used for tracking) are compared to certain photocell(s), (such as photocells A and B and C and D) in order to derive a Radial Focus Error (RFE) signal, by observing radial spot size.

  • Patent number: 7248556
Abstract: A master memory device that stores a plurality of pages of information. An unexposed memory device (190) is adjacent to the master memory device (180). The unexposed memory device and the master memory device are separated by a gap. An aperture unit (130) is disposed in the gap. The aperture has a plurality of aperture openings. Each opening corresponds, in size, to an individual page constitutes of a column with specific multiplexing angles of memory in the master memory device. The aperture unit is located across a face of the master memory device such that the openings correspond to selected ones of the pages of information. A light source (120) generates a beam that transfers memory data from the master memory device to the unexposed memory device.

  • Patent number: 7230986
Abstract: A pipeline video decoder and decompression system handles a plurality of separately encoded bit streams arranged as a single serial bit stream of digital bits and having separately encoded pairs of control codes and corresponding data carried in the serial bit stream. The pipeline system employs a plurality of interconnected stages to decode and decompress the single bit stream, including a start code detector. When in a search mode, the start code detector searches for a specific start code corresponding to one of multiple compression standards. The start code detector responding to the single serial bit stream generates control tokens and data tokens. A respective one of the tokens includes a plurality of data words. Each data word has an extension bit which indicates a presence of additional words therein. The data words are thereby unlimited in number.

  • Patent number: RE39809
Abstract: An apparatus for providing sector location pulses to a controller of a rotating disk data storage device having a counter clocked in proportion to the disk rotation rate and an accumulator for accumulating times to sectors on the disk. A comparator connected to the counter and the accumulator enables an accumulator clock for repetitive clocking of the accumulator at such times the contents of the accumulator do not exceed the contents of the counter. A sector location pulse generator connected to the comparator generates the controller pulses, when enabled, concurrently with the accumulator clock signals. A master reset generator resets the first counter and the accumulator each time an index location on the disk passes a transducer head used to read and write data to and from the disk and a partial reset generator resets the accumulator each time the transducer head is moved between tracks on the disk.
