Abstract: An information provider and a searcher provide messages appropriate to a particular user of a terminal regardless of the sites of the World Wide Web the user accesses. The information provider establishes a physical communication line to the terminal. A first logical link is established on the physical communication line for forwarding a first image from the World Wide Web to the terminal. User identification is received from the terminal, and forwarded to a searcher storing user information and the transmittal conditions of a second message, through a second communication line. An second image appropriate for the particular user is searched for by a searcher from a message database based on the user information and the transmittal conditions, and transmitted to the terminal through a second logical link also established on the first communication line.

Abstract: A work group fax device and method of utilizing such a device are disclosed wherein a user may control when faxes are printed. A user of the fax machine, after leaving work for the night, might not want incoming faxes to be printed until he returns to work in the morning. The user may set all incoming faxes to be saved (accumulated) in memory in the fax machine. The user may later command the fax machine to print the accumulated faxes. Also described are password protection and the ability to set times when accumulation should begin and end. A user may engage and disengage fax holding from any permitted LAN workstation or from the fax machine's front panel.

The electronic case manager include a relational database having a number of tables, and a database management program.

Abstract: A networked system having a plurality of workstations and a peripheral device, the peripheral device having a printing function, memory for storing a plurality of private print-ready jobs and input means for manually inputting information into the peripheral device. The peripheral device is also capable of accepting a private print job together with a PIN from a given workstation, placing the private print job into a queue of print jobs, converting the private print job into a private print-ready job, storing the private print-ready job in memory, and notifying the given workstation when the private job is print-ready.

Abstract: A multifunction peripheral which can perform copying, printing, faxing and scanning. The MFP is made up of a hard output unit, essentially a copier, and a control unit, essentially a print server. User interface definitions for copying are embedded in the hard output unit. User interface definitions for printing, faxing and scanning are stored in the control unit. When the hard output unit resets, it loads the UI definitions from the control unit. The UI definitions in the control unit are stored as a file and are easily updated from a LAN.

Abstract: A data processing system comprising a single Host coupled by a communications channel to a single multifunction peripheral is disclosed. The multifunction peripheral comprises a paper tray, a display, a user input device, a processor, a first memory for long term storage and a second rewritable memory for short term storage, a communications interface, the multifunction peripheral for providing document scanning and hard output functions. The Host comprises a processor, a first rewritable memory for long term storage and a second rewritable memory for short term storage, a communications interface, and a network adapter for communicating with a computer network. The communications channel coupling the communications interface of the multifunction peripheral and the communications interface of the Host.
