  • Patent number: 4010277
Abstract: The present invention relates to certain processes and compositions useful for inhibiting the growth of slime in water and, in particular, water used for industrial purposes; for example, in the manufacture of wood pulp, in the manufacture of paper, in cooling water systems, and in effluent water treatment. The novel processes and compositions of the present invention are processes of mixtures which show unexpected synergistic activity against microorganisms, including bacteria, (in particular Aerobacter aerogenes) fungi, and algae, which produce slime in aqueous systems which are objectionable from either an operational or aesthetic point of view. Specifically, the invention is directed to the use of compositions comprising a combination 1,3-dichloroacetone oxime acetate and polyoxyethylene sorbitol hexaoleate having an average of 40 oxyethylene groups.

  • Patent number: 3989169
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a self-leveling fluid container or dispenser. The invention can be specifically illustrated as it applies to an automatic self-leveling zero burette. A hole is drilled in a wall of the burette approximately on top of the zero graduation line. A piece of plastic tubing with a saddle base serves as a sleeve. The saddle base of the sleeve is connected to the hole in the burette. A length of plastic tubing has a first end thereof connected to the other end of the sleeve. A second end of the length of plastic tubing is inserted through a tight fitting hole in the cap of a squeeze bottle and is extended to near the bottom of the bottle. The squeeze bottle serves as fluid reservoir for fluid to be fed to the burette. When the squeeze bottle containing the fluid to be fed to the burette is depressed the fluid travels up the length of tubing and into the burette.

  • Patent number: 3965002
Abstract: A continuous, steady-state process for precipitating dissolved orthophosphate from an aqueous system, wherein a slurry of seed crystals of calcium phosphate, formed under critical conditions, is introduced into a reactor region, the phosphate-containing water is fed into the region under certain conditions of pH and calcium content, and the dissolved phosphates are precipitated at a rate equal to the feed rate, such that the residual dissolved phosphorus level of the treated water is below 50 parts per billion.

  • Patent number: 3960496
Abstract: Apparatus for determining corrosion or deposition rate of corrosive constituents in the flue gases of a boiler system. A probe loop has a coolant circulating therethrough wherein the loop includes a removable specimen that can be tested for deposition or corrosion rate. The coolant recirculates through the loop to maintain the surface temperature of the specimen substantially constant approximating the maximum corrosion temperature. Coolant is fed to the probe loop by a coolant tank which includes a liquid coolant reservoir in a lower portion thereof and a gas chamber for gaseous coolant in an upper portion thereof. The gas pressure within the gas chamber can be varied so as to vary the boiling point temperature of the liquid coolant. The gas chamber is connected to the lower end of a condenser coil which has a variable heat transfer area. Between the gas chamber and the condenser coil is located a contact bed to enhance the contact of condensed coolant and gaseous coolant.

  • Patent number: 3953330
Abstract: The present disclosure is directed to novel water-soluble cationic polymers and their use either alone or in conjunction with coagulant aids to flocculate or coagulate matter suspended in aqueous systems. The novel polymer is prepared by reacting an alkylene polyamine with an epihalohydrin under specific conditions which include the incremental reaction of the epihalohydrin to fully react with the epihalohydrin and attain a polymer of uniform viscosity.

  • Patent number: 3935121
Abstract: A foam control composition, and methods for its production and use, is disclosed, which comprises a liquid hydrocarbon carrier, an organic emulsifier, an amide of a fatty acid, and, optionally, a silicone oil. Composition is useful in controlling foam encountered in preparation of paper pulp, resinous materials, and in the treatment of waste systems and cooling towers. The foam control composition is prepared by (a.) combining the amide, emulsifier and from about 1/5 to about 1/2 of the liquid hydrocarbon carrier, (b.) heating until a clear melt is obtained, (c.) rapidly adding to said melt the remainder of said liquid hydrocarbon carrier to cool the melt to a temperature of from ca. 150.degree.F. to ca. 200.degree.F., and (d.) allowing the cooled mixture to further cool to a temperature of from about ambient to about 135.degree.F.
