  • Patent number: 6788930
Abstract: Method for reducing backlogged calls is disclosed. According to one embodiment, an initial parameter set providing an initial blocking probability and a timestamp is received. A current time index is determined based on the timestamp. Following, a current blocking probability is calculated based on the initial blocking probability and the current time index. The initial parameter set can also provide a delay period, a throughput rate, an expected new call rate and an initial backlog. The initial blocking probability can be determined, for example, from the throughput rate, expected new call rate and initial backlog. An elapsed time between the timestamp and the current system time is determined, and a current time index is determined by dividing the elapsed time by the delay period. A call request is blocked, for example, when a randomly generated number between 0 and 1 is less than the current blocking probability.

  • Patent number: 6788733
Abstract: A novel and improved method and apparatus in a communication system (100) provides for efficient processing of received signals. The method and apparatus includes converting an encoded and spectrum spread received signal to received samples, determining a first channel estimate based on a first set of pilot signal samples. The first set of pilot signal samples are included in the received samples. The received samples are passed through a correlation and decoding process in accordance with the first channel estimate to produce decoded received samples. The decoded received samples are re-encoded and re-spreaded to produce re-encoded and re-spread samples. The re-encoded and re-spread samples are modified based on the first channel estimate to produce channel modified re-encoded and re-spread samples. The received samples pass through an interference cancellation that uses the channel modified re-encoded and re-spread samples to produce a new set of received samples.

  • Patent number: 6788937
Abstract: A mobile station accesses a base station by randomly selecting a first reverse link common control channel from a set of random access channels. The mobile station transmits a request portion of an access probe over the first reverse link common control channel. The request portion is subject to collision with other signals. The request portion comprises a hash identification which is derived from a uniquely identifying number using a hash function. The hash identification quasi-uniquely identifies the mobile station. The mobile station receives a channel assignment message from the base station designating the hash identification and a reserved access channel. The reserved access channel provides communication with a low probability of contention. The mobile station transmits a message portion of the access probe over the reserved access channel.

  • Patent number: 6788748
Abstract: A method and apparatus for minimizing the amount of time that a mobile station is to be out of communication with an “origination” base station while searching for a suitable system to which to perform a mobile station assisted hard handoff. After being directed to search for pilot signals in an alternate frequency band, the mobile station tunes to that alternate frequency and samples the incoming data, storing those samples in memory. When a sufficient number of samples have been stored, the mobile station retunes to the origination frequency. The forward link data is again received by the mobile station, and reverse link data can be successfully transmitted to the origination base station. After retuning to the origination frequency, a searcher in the mobile station will subsequently be employed to search for pilot signal offsets utilizing the stored data collected from the alternate frequency.

  • Patent number: 6785341
Abstract: Techniques to “successively” process received signals at a receiver unit in a MIMO system to recover transmitted data, and to “adaptively” process data at a transmitter unit based on channel state information available for the MIMO channel. A successive cancellation receiver processing technique is used to process the received signals and performs a number of iterations to provide decoded data streams. For each iteration, input (e.g., received) signals for the iteration are processed to provide one or more symbol streams. One of the symbol streams is selected and processed to provide a decoded data stream. The interference due to the decoded data stream is approximately removed (i.e., canceled) from the input signals provided to the next iteration. The channel characteristics are estimated and reported back to the transmitter system and used to adjust (i.e., adapt) the processing (e.g., coding, modulation, and so on) of data prior to transmission.

  • Patent number: 6785250
Abstract: Techniques to time-share a common channelization code among multiple terminals for compressed mode transmissions. Each terminal is initially assigned a respective channelization code used to channelize data transmitted in non-compressed frames for the terminal. A common channelization code used to channelize data transmitted in compressed frames for the terminals is also selected. Each compressed frame includes one or more compressed transmissions and all or a portion of a transmission gap. The compressed frames for the terminals are scheduled such that the compressed transmissions for the compressed frames do not overlap. Thereafter, non-compressed frames for each terminal are channelized with the channelization code assigned to the terminal, and compressed frames for the terminals are channelized with the common channelization code.

  • Patent number: 6779147
Abstract: A method and accompanying apparatus provides for efficient use of communication resources in a CDMA communication system by controlling a transmitting source (300) for transmitting a packet of data over a data frame at a first data rate and at a power level and re-transmitting the packet of data at a second data rate over at least two frames of data at the power level when a receiving destination fails to decode the packet of data. A data rate and power level selector (303) selects the second data rate lower than the first data rate. The data rate and power level selector (303) determines energy per bit of the packet of data at a ratio of the first and second data rates, and selects the second data rate from the ratio such that the determined energy per bit is at a minimum level.

  • Patent number: 6775242
Abstract: Schemes to time-align transmissions from multiple base stations to a terminal. To achieve time-alignment, differences between the arrival times of transmissions from the base stations, as observed at the terminal, are determined and provided to the system and used to adjust the timing at the base stations such that terminal-specific radio frames arrive at the terminal within a particular time window. In one scheme, a time difference between two base stations is partitioned into a frame-level time difference and a chip-level time difference. Whenever requested to perform and report time difference measurements, the terminal measures the chip-level timing for each candidate base station relative to a reference base station. Additionally, the terminal also measures the frame-level timing and includes this information in the time difference measurement only if required. Otherwise, the terminal sets the frame-level part to a predetermined value (e.g., zero).
