Abstract: According to one embodiment, a bow includes a handle portion and a bowstring. Compression members including primary compression elements and secondary compression elements are positioned on the ends of the handle portion. The compression elements are arcuate in shape and joined at the ends. As the bowstring is drawn, the compression members are compressed and energy is stored therein. The bow can include limbs that do not significantly deform or store energy as the bow is drawn. Upon release of the bowstring, the stored energy is rapidly returned to the bowstring.

Abstract: A method is disclosed for increasing a parametric output of a parametric loudspeaker system. The method can include the operation of providing multiple ultrasonic frequency emission zones that output signals in a frequency band. The phase relationships of the ultrasonic frequency emission zones can be correlated and controlled to increase phase coherence between each ultrasonic frequency emission zone to maximize parametric output. Correlating and controlling the phase relationships can include offsetting a frequency of a carrier signal applied to each emission zone from a resonant frequency of each emission zone in view of a rate of change of phase of each emission zone in a vicinity of each resonant frequency. Ultrasonic energy from the ultrasonic frequency emission zones can be generated, using the correlated phase relationship to increase the parametric output.

Abstract: An acoustic and heat control device is disclosed and described. The device can include a central chamber oriented along a central axis within an outer shell, said central chamber having an inlet configured to receive a high energy material from a high energy outlet. Additionally, the device can include a damper disposed proximate to the central chamber and comprising an energy absorbent material. In one aspect, the device can be used with a firearm.
Abstract: A conductive gasket includes a deformable contact region configured to provide compressive contact between the mounting surface of a connector (e.g., a right-angle micro-D connector) and a grounded surface of the substrate (e.g., PCB). A fastener region extends from the deformable contact region and is configured to align with a mounting region of the connector. A keep-out zone is provided adjacent to the deformable contact region and the fastener region and is configured to allow the pins of the connector to pass therethrough.
Abstract: A radiation detector with an integrated collimator. The collimator may be deposited on an anode or cathode face of the radiation detector. An insulating material may be deposited between the collimator and the radiation detector if the collimator is deposited on the anode side. The collimator may be comprised of a single layer or of multiple layers. Patterning and etching may be used to create an aperture in the collimator to allow x-rays to impinge on a full charge collection region of the radiation detector intrinsic region.
Abstract: A system and method for varying the directionality of an acoustic output of a loud hailing and warning device is disclosed. The method includes the operation of placing a sliding high-pass filter in a signal path of a transducer array having a frequency-dependant dispersion characteristic. A control is provided that varies a lower cutoff frequency of the sliding high-pass filter. The lower cutoff frequency of an electronic audio signal is variably controlled and sent to the transducer array to variably control the directionality of the acoustic output of the loud hailing and warning device.
Abstract: Methods and devices for a miniature, ultra-low power impact recorder for detecting, quantifying and recording the energy of an explosive blast or ballistic projectile impact. In one embodiment, the impact recorder can included a sensor comprised of an array of electromechanical resonators that is sensitive to the vibrations produced in selected, discrete frequency ranges that approximate the spectral signature characteristics of the shockwave resulting from the ballistic impact event, even after traveling through impacted material or body tissues.

Abstract: The subject invention features an entrance module for a height adjustable enclosure with a top portion movable with the respect to a bottom portion. The preferred entrance module comprises a hingedly attached platform movable between a stowed folded position and a deployed unfolded position. A locking assembly releasably locks the platform in the folded position independent of the position of the top movable part of the shelter. The preferred locking assembly includes a rail attached to the top movable portion of the shelter, one of a female and a male portion of a lock attached to and slideable along the rail, and the other of the female and the male portion of the lock attached to the platform.

Abstract: A switching system includes two or more rotary switching mechanisms for selectively moving items. The switching system may be used for switching optical elements, such as filters, into and out of an optical path, for example selectively placing one of a group of available filters into the optical path. Each of the rotary switching mechanisms has a passive torque device, including a mechanical flexure and a magnetic latch, that provides most of the torque for moving an item between a retracted position and an extended position, and vice versa. The passive torque device has a pair of null positions or detents at the retracted and extended positions. A brushless DC motor is used to provide a force to get the passive torque device out of these null positions. Thereafter the passive torque device is able on its own to provide most of the torque for movement.
Abstract: A system and method for elevating a portion of a laptop relative to a support surface to improve underbody ventilation by obtaining one or more removable blocks having a tacky surface on one face of the block, removably adhering the tacky surface to either the laptop support surface or the underside of the laptop, and positioning the laptop on the support surface such that the removable block elevates a portion of the laptop above the support surface.
Abstract: The invention relates to the field of covalently attaching proteins to a substrate, particularly to methods of immobilizing proteins by posttranslationally modifying a cysteine residue of said protein through the addition of functional groups. The invention also relates to biological molecules used in such techniques, including proteins, and detection methods and kits that utilize such immobilized proteins, such as a microdevice or “protein chip”, a high-throughput screening device, and for the microscopy of proteins on a surface.
Abstract: In one or more embodiments, a multi-axis articulated solar light shade that protects elements of a space-based sensor from direct solar illumination includes a base; a partial conical baffle tube having a first end portion, a second end portion, an elongated curved portion defining a shade between the first and second end portions, and an opening defined in an interior of the elongated curved portion, the first end portion rotatably attached to the base; and a visor pivotably attached to the second end portion. The partial conical baffle tube may be selectively rotated about a sensor line-of-sight in response to the sun's position relative to the sensor line-of-sight; and the visor may be selectively pivoted relative to the partial conical baffle tube in response to the sun's position relative to the sensor line-of-sight so as to protect the sensor from the direct solar illumination at any given time or any given orbital position.

Abstract: A modular exhaust tube system for directing exhaust gases from an internal combustion engine. The exhaust tube system includes first and second elongate half-shells, with each half-shell comprising an elongate thin-wall body having a substantially U-shaped cross-sectional profile with a constant sideways opening along the length of the body. The exhaust tube system also includes a center brace having dimensions which span the length and height of the sideways openings. The sideways openings of the first and second half-shells are coupled together around the center brace to form a flattened elongate exhaust tube having an inlet end and an outlet end for directing exhaust gases from the internal combustion engine. In one aspect the first and second half-shells are selected from a group of interchangeable and modular half-shells having different substantially U-shaped cross-sectional profiles that are reversible top-to-bottom and end-to-end.
