  • Patent number: 7344101
Abstract: A data storage tape cartridge used in a tape transport apparatus that incorporates air bearing technology is provided. The tape cartridge includes a housing for storing the data storage tape and a compressible filter. The filter is located proximate to an opening, or air inlet, that is in communication with the housing interior. The housing may also have a second opening, or air outlet, in communication with the housing interior such that the filter is interposed between the inlet and the outlet. Further, the housing may include a storage region to retain the filter in the compressed state. The filter and the storage region may have congruent geometries. A method of supplying filtered air to a tape transport apparatus is also provided. The method contemplates drawing ambient air through the filter and passing it directly through the outlet opening for use by the tape transport apparatus.

  • Patent number: 7282142
Abstract: A fluid strainer device is disclosed. The device includes a housing which defines an open chamber, the chamber having both at least one fluid input port and at least one fluid outlet port. A plurality of spaced strainer baskets are disposed within the chamber. Each basket has a pair of spaced perforated side panels, a perforated rear panel, a perforated top panel and an open front portion in fluid communication with the chamber fluid input port. Finally, each strainer basket is aligned within the chamber for fluid flow from the chamber input port into the basket's open front portion and out through the perforations thereof to filter debris from the fluid while preventing substantial fluid pressure drop between the input and outlet ports substantially independent of debris buildup within the baskets.

  • Patent number: 7222719
Abstract: An apparatus and method for transporting containers to be processed in a manufacturing operation includes a transfer assembly that transfers containers from a load area on an upstream conveyor assembly to a discharge on downstream conveyor assembly for further processing. The upstream conveyor assembly may include longitudinally extending first and second conveyors oriented at an angle to one another. The transfer assembly may include a rotating wheel that picks containers from a chute and moves them, one at a time, to the downstream conveyor assembly. The downstream conveyor assembly may be in the form of an elevator that has bays that are sized to receive individual containers. The bays are formed by vanes on a moving belt. The method includes steps inherent in the structure, including receiving a bulk supply of containers, moving them horizontally, columnizing them into a single file, elevating them and thereafter discharging them.

  • Patent number: 7216385
Abstract: An inflatable cushion for use in a system and method in supporting the knees and legs of a person during surgery included an inflatable bladder that can move from a collapsed state to an expanded state. A bladder port communicates with a source of inflating gas. The system includes the source of pressurized gas and a valve assembly to switchably control the inflation and deflation of the bladder. The bladder may have a removable cover extending around the bladder, and the bladder may have side pleats to assist in expanding with the cover having corresponding accordion folds. The method involves placing a patient on a surgical table, decompressing the patient's spine to a flat back/drop knee position, interposing the bladder between the table and the patient's knees and advancing the knees to a full prone position by inflating the bladder.

  • Patent number: 7196216
Abstract: A process for producing gabapentin, (1-(aminomethyl)-1-cyclohexaneacetic acid) from gabapentin hydrochloride salt. In the disclosed process, the gabapentin hydrochloride is converted to gabapentin using an inorganic base, such as barium hydroxide. Gabapentin hydrochloride is converted to gabapentin sulfate which in turn is converted to free base using barium hydroxide. The process is directed to improvement in the manufacture of gabapentin which would be industrially feasible and effective. Gabapentin obtained following the process of the invention is suitable as a drug especially in the treatment of cerebral diseases such as epilepsy.

  • Patent number: 7171812
Abstract: An electric generation station employs a solar array to heat a thermal transfer fluid that is supplied to a heat exchanger to produce steam. The heated steam drives a steam engine that operates either an electric generator to produce electricity or a pump assembly. The pump assembly can pump water to an elevated location for use during peak times by flowing water downwardly past an electric generator. The electric generators can be pelton turbines. One or more thermal fluid storage facilities can be used to store heated fluid, and heat may also be stored in a heat retaining material. Additional optional features and combinations of optional assemblies are disclosed. A method of generating electricity with these systems is also described.

  • Patent number: 7165426
Abstract: A method utilizes a locking device that includes a shackle member having a shank with a latch portion and a stop at opposite ends. A locking head mounts in a locked state on the latch portion but is removable when unlocked. A sleeve is carried on the shank but is removable. The sleeve and the shank together define a size conversion structure for the shackle. When the sleeve is on the shank, the shackle has one operative thickness to closely fit one size aperture, but when the sleeve is removed, the shackle has another, smaller operative thickness to fit a smaller aperture. A retaining member may be employed to resist removal of the sleeve. Two or more sleeves may be used to fit more than two apertures. These can be separately mountable onto the shank or may be nested on the shank, one inside of the other.

  • Patent number: 7152365
Abstract: A method of capturing insects comprises, in one embodiment, provision of an elongated housing which permits airflow between upstream and downstream ends while impeding passage of insects therebetween, a movable closure which is biased into a closed position to hinder access to the interior through the upstream end, and a movable purge valve. In operation, air is evacuated through the purge opening establishing vacuum source within the housing interior, the movable closure is placed proximate to a target insect, and an air pressure differential is created whereby ambient air is drawn into the housing interior at a sufficient flow to cause the movable closure to open, thus creating an entryway into the upstream region drawing the insect into the upstream region to be trapped when the movable closure returns to the closed position.

  • Patent number: 7140113
Abstract: A blade of ceramic material is treated to enhance the strength and sharpness of the cutting edge. In one embodiment, ceramic particles along at least one margin of an edge-forming face are fused, such as by a laser treatment. The edge mardin can have a hard ceramic coating of a different ceramic material such as a nitride of chromium, zirconium, titanium, titanium carbon or boron. The hard ceramic coating can be used alone or in conjunction with the laser treatment. The invention includes the methods of treating the edge, both to form the hard ceramic coating and to fuse the particles by scanning with laser, such as an ultraviolet laser.
