The objective may be achieved by directing a line of low volume, high pressure jets of filtrate or wash liquor against the belt underside. Alternatively, sonicly vibrated foils extended transversely of and adjacent to the belt are effective to disrupt the filler mat pursuant to the invention objective.

    Abstract: The present printing process provides a unique color tone print of muted contrast in two, sequentially operated, flexographic print stations. A suitable paper substrate base for the process is uncoated white paper of stationery or envelope grade. As the paper supply web is drawn through the first print station, the desired image or design is printed on the paper with a colorless solution of a polyol, such as glycerine, in a glycol ether solvent. The second print station simply lays a uniform color coating of compatible pigment or solvent dye based ink over the entire web surface. Shade or tone differences resulting from differences in ink absorption with respect to the glycerine solution image areas provide a distinctive printed product.

Two ultrasonic wave sensors are mounted in alignment with the instrument frame at respective distances from an ultrasonic generator. A motor driven turntable beneath the sensors and generator supports a paper test specimen for automatic progression of the specimen fiber orientation relative to the sonic wave propogational direction. Electronic data processing equipment resolve ultrasonic emission and reception signals for quantitative determination of the sonic velocity through four directional transmission modes of a specimen. Such sonic velocity data enables determination of four in-plane elastic parameters.

    Abstract: Gaseous chlorine is blended with a paper pulp slurry flow stream for pulp bleaching by mixing the chlorine with a larger quantity of steam prior to blending the chlorine/steam gas mixture with bleach washer filtrate which serves as carrier water for a multiplied number of gas bubbles entrained in the filtrate. As the cooler filtrate water extracts heat from the mixed gas bubble, the steam constituent condenses to collapse each bubble to a fraction of the original volume thereby providing a larger number of smaller chlorine bubbles than otherwise available from conventional phase mixing injectors.The mixed phase flow stream of chlorine and filtrate is thereafter blended with the pulp slurry flow stream by shear induced turbulence resulting from a greater injection velocity of the mixed phase stream into the center of the slower moving slurry stream.

    Abstract: Wood veneer strips are butt joined end-to-end for assembly of an indefinite length strip or sheet suitable for reeling. The splicing apparatus clamps the veneer strip ends to be joined in longitudinal planar alignment for trimming by two spaced shear knives having parallel cutting planes. Following the shear cut, a reciprocating carriage for one bed knife to which one veneer strip is clamped is withdrawn from the corresponding cutting plane to permit movement of all shear knife structure from between the carriage and the other, fixed position bed knife without retracting the shear knife edges back past the bed knife edges. The reciprocating carriage is then moved along with its corresponding bed knife and clamped veneer strip into abutment with the fixed position bed knife and respective strip edge where lap splice material is laid across the joint and cured in place under heat and pressure.

Rotational power to drive gravure, transfer and smoothing rolls is extracted from the converting machine supply web by an S-wrap through the loaded nip between a pair of drive rolls. A low-powered auxiliary drive motor is automatically engaged to keep the gravure and transfer rolls conditioned with coating during brief intervals of web feed cessation. The entire unit is constructed on a space frame that is supported by caster wheels to facilitate movement to and from an appropriate converting machine position which may be between the reeled web supply unwind stand and a web preheating drum station leading into a double-backing machine.

    Abstract: A rotary envelope machine blank cutter is provided with laterally adjustable, independent frame units for each meshing set of knife rolls for changing the depth of a side cut into a blank for envelope size and style production changes. The rotational and axial meshing of hard and soft knives respective to a single knife roll set is adjusted without disturbing the roll mount of either knife. Changes in envelope length or style are accommodated by the mechanical capacity to adjust the rotation cut timing between the knife roll sets of a two-set unit and also between respective cutting units of two or more two-set units. As in the case of lateral cut adjustments, knife roll mounts are undisturbed by rotational timing adjustments. Consequently, the machine may be quickly and accurately changed for production runs of any of several envelope style and several sizes respective to each style: all adjustments being made without disturbing the knife profile mesh of any knife set.
