  • Patent number: 6775368
Abstract: A system and method for remote activation of customized telecommunication services are provided for data network telephony subscribers in a data network. In response to a call originator placing a call to a terminating telephony subscriber in the data network, a telephony server routes the call according to custom telecommunication service instructions provided in advance by the telephony subscriber and stored remotely from the telephony subscriber's point of presence on the data network. The call originator may be a data network telephony subscriber or a subscriber in the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). The telephony server preferably performs the call routing based custom telecommunication service instructions (along with the subscriber's network address) retrieved from a subscriber profile server that maintains a subscriber profile database.

  • Patent number: 6770209
Abstract: An isotropic deposition method for trench narrowing of thin film magnetic write head features to be created by reactive ion etching. According to the method, a photolithographically defined photoresist trench is formed over a hardmask and underlying polymer layer as part of tri-layer resist process. Instead of performing the usual hardmask and polymer etching steps using the photoresist mask pattern, a spacer layer is deposited isotropically or directionally at an angle to cover the vertical side walls of the trench. The spacer layer is etchable by the hardmask etch process but resistant to the polymer etch process. When the hardmask etch process is performed, the spacer layer material applied to the trench side walls remains intact, thereby defining a narrowed trench that is extended by the subsequent base layer etch process.

  • Patent number: 6694517
Abstract: A broadband telecommunication network (such as a cable television distribution system) includes a plurality of switching units (such as taps) controlling subscriber access to the network. The switching units are controlled from a central location (such as a head end) using minimal network transmission medium power. A repeating sequence of switching unit control messages is sent from the central location across the network. Each of the messages is addressed to an individual one of the switching units. Each switching unit is periodically powered up from a low power sleep state to a higher power operational wake state in synchronization with a corresponding one of the control messages being sent from the central location. After a switching unit's corresponding control message is processed, the switching unit is returned to the lower power sleep state.

  • Patent number: 6687495
Abstract: A method and a system are disclosed for obtaining the dynamic network state of mobile subscribers, such as subscriber location, presence or other state information. This information, which may be distributed within various core mobile network elements, is obtained via a differentiated network service gateway (DNSG) that interfaces with the mobile network elements in a manner that accommodates the network's operator enforced controls and limitations. The DNSG implements service level agreements (SLAs) that support differentiated quality-of-service (QoS) in terms of accessing the dynamic network state of the mobile subscribers. The consumers (DNSG clients) of the dynamic network state information may include applications that provide communication and transactional services to mobile subscribers based on their network state, and the mobile subscribers themselves.

  • Patent number: 6657825
Abstract: A magnetoresistive sensor for use in a data storage device has a recessed sensing element (magnetic tunnel junction, CPP spin valve, etc.) with an exchange biased sensing ferromagnetic (free) layer, and a flux guide that magnetically connects the sensing element to a sensing surface of the sensor. The free layer is selectively exchange biased by a layer of exchange bias material placed under non-active regions of the free layer that lie outside the sensing element and flux guide track widths. The flux guide is provided by extending the free layer from a forward edge of the sensing element to the sensor surface. Advantageously, the sensing element and the flux guide have equal track width so that magnetic flux directed from the flux guide into the sensing element is not diluted with consequent loss of sensitivity.
