    Abstract: An optical waveguide device includes an active optical waveguide device and a passive optical waveguide device. The active optical waveguide device is formed at least in part on a semiconductor layer and includes an electrode portion. A region of altered effective mode index is created by the active optical waveguide device and controlled by application of an electric voltage to the electrode portion in a manner that alters a free carrier density of the region of altered effective mode index. Changing the electric voltage to the electrode portion changes the effective mode index in the region of altered effective mode index. The passive optical waveguide device is formed at least in part from a polysilicon layer deposited on the semiconductor layer. An effective mode index of a region of static effective mode index within the optical waveguide is created by the polysilicon layer of the passive optical waveguide device.

    Abstract: The present invention encompasses a method and apparatus for detecting and characterizing one or more ingress events in the return band and creating a time/frequency map based on the detection of the ingress events. The time/frequency map is further characterized by marking frequency bands with ingress level above a predetermined threshold with a “1”. The time/frequency time map may be used to determine when and which return frequency band has exceeded a predetermined threshold, and to distinguish between a narrowband ingress event and a wideband ingress event. When such characterization has been made, the return path may be attenuated or disconnected at a communications gateway device located at or substantially near the subscriber location. By disconnecting the return path or attenuating the return path signal at or near the subscriber location, the ingress may be reduced and locations which are the cause of severe ingress may be effectively isolated.

    Abstract: An interruptible power supply module, located at a customer's premise, functions to reduce the demand on a power utility company. As a power utility senses a critical power supply demand situation, it sends an “interrupt power” control signal through an alternative communications network (a telecommunications network, for example), to each subscribing customer. Upon receipt of the “interrupt” control signal, a switch is activated in the customer's interruptible power supply module to remove a pre-defined “interruptible” load for a predetermined period of time (perhaps not to exceed 15 minutes in any hour). The module may also be used to “gracefully” add interruptible loads back onto the system after a complete power outage.

The conductive element and the valve body are then used as the plates of a parallel plate capacitor, where the measured capacitance will vary as a function of the position of the diaphragm mambrane, having a first value when the diaphragm is in the “open” position and a second value when the diaphragm is in the “closed” position. Position values between the “open” and “closed” positions can also be determined, as well as the presence of different fluids within the valve body when the valve is in the “open” position.

    Abstract: A semiconductor optical device structure includes passivated facets formed by first removing the native oxide contaminant with a “non-reactive” molecular gas etchant, such as XeF2. As the oxide is removed, a passivation flux is introduced into the vacuum chamber so as to begin the process of forming a passivation layer to cover the exposed facet surface. The gas etchant is slowly turned off and the flux is increased so as to form a passivation layer of the desired thickness on the “cleaned” facet surface. A protective film is then be evaporated to cover the passivation layer.

The thickness of the reference oxide (t) is measured using any conventional technique (such as an ellipsometer). An ultra-thin oxide is then simultaneously formed on both the reference sample and semiconductor device. The total oxide thickness (T) of the dual-layer structure on the reference sample is then measured (again, using any conventional technique), and the difference between the two measured values (T−t=&dgr;) is defined as the thickness of the ultra-thin oxide layer.

    Abstract: A transmission fiber for use in a Raman amplified optical communication system is formed to exhibit certain characteristics that limit modulation instability and four-wave mixing in the amplification region, thus reducing the noise component present in the transmission system. In particular, the group-velocity dispersion (denoted as D and measured in terms of ps/nm-km) is restricted to be either non-positive or greater than +1.5 ps/nm-km in the pump wavelength range of interest (a typical pump wavelength range being 1430-1465 nm). Preferably, the magnitude of the dispersion is kept below a value of 10 ps/nm-km in the signal wavelength range of interest (e.g., the “C” band or “L” band). Four-wave mixing is reduced by ensuring that the zero-dispersion frequency of the transmission fiber is not centered between the pump frequency and a frequency experiencing Raman gain.

Evidence of mode-locking is obtained from the measured optical spectra and corresponding interferograms, as well as from the rf spectra of the photocurrent detected with a fast quantum-well infrared photodetector. An estimate for the pulse width of approximately 3 psec is inferred from these data.
