Patent number: 3967754Abstract: An improved easy open end closure, characterized by the provision of improved pull tab positioning means for maintaining the pull tab in a desired orientation relative to the flap-defining score line, regardless of doming of the end panel. The finger ring portion of the tab is nested within a recess formed in the end panel. A protrusion, formed interior to this recess, abuts the interior periphery of the finger ring, serving as an anti-rotation abutment. The tab rivet panel is formed at an angle to the plane of the tab, inclining 4.degree.-6.degree. away from the end panel center, whereby a panelward bias is imparted to the finger ring portion of the tab by the tab attachment rivet. This bias serves to retain the finger ring within the recess.Type: GrantFiled: May 12, 1975Date of Patent: July 6, 1976Assignee: Continental Can Company, Inc.Inventor: Obert M. Ostrem

Patent number: 3941276Abstract: An improved pull tab mounting arrangement for an easy open end closure member, characterized by the provision of improved pull tab positioning means for maintaining the pull tab in a desired orientation relative to the flap-defining score line. Two protrusions formed in the closure end panel prevent rotational displacement of the tab about the attachment rivet resulting from contact with the knock out pad during the filling and seaming operations or from improper handling subsequent to filling. The protrusions, which are symetrically disposed with relation to an end panel chord drawn along the axis of the flap, serve as anti-rotation abutments and may further serve as spacing means to prevent contact between the tab and the knockout pad. The protrusions may be disposed abutting the tab legs, interior and tangent to the circle of the interior of the tab ring or beneath the ring itself.Type: GrantFiled: November 20, 1974Date of Patent: March 2, 1976Assignee: Continental Can Company, Inc.Inventor: Anilkumar U. Patent number: 3938696Abstract: An improved easy-open end closure which maintains close contact between a tab and container end panel prior to opening, regardless of doming of the end panel. An integral rivet is formed on the end panel inclined off-center 10.degree.-20.degree. toward the end panel center, the rivet securing the pull tab thereto whereby the tab converges with the end panel toward the periphery thereof.SUMMARY OF THE INVENTIONWhen easy-open containers employing integral off-center rivets are subjected to excessive internal pressure the end closure bulges outwardly and exerts an upward force on the tab. Occassionally the tab is rotated upwardly about the rivet and retains this displacement after the internal pressure has been reduced and the end panel bulging has subsided. Tab displacement of this sort detracts from the appearance of the container.Type: GrantFiled: September 18, 1974Date of Patent: February 17, 1976Assignee: Continental Can Company, Inc.Inventor: Edward J. Herbst

Patent number: 3938693Abstract: A container end panel having a non-detachable flap portion partially severable from the panel to provide an opening. The flap portion is recessed below the remainder of the panel and is broken away by a fitment which fits into the recess. The fitment is adapted to be pushed inwardly and after rupturing the score between the panel and the flap functions to swing the flap inwardly about a hinge formed by the unscored metal connecting the flap to the panel. The fitment is pressed into the opening and snaps within the opening and provides a guard shielding the users finger from the raw edges at the tear edge about the opening. The invention is also directed to a formation of the inner edge of the ring to facilitate rupturing the score and thereafter swinging the panel inwardly.Type: GrantFiled: February 10, 1975Date of Patent: February 17, 1976Assignee: Continental Can Company, Inc.Inventors: Anil U. Patent number: 3937383Abstract: An improved pressure welding technique permits high speed room temperature seam bonding of metal sheets. A metal interlay is placed between the faying surfaces to be bonded and the assembly is compressed until the interlay is properly spread over the faying surfaces. The interlay has a cross-section designed to produce a highly differential flow when subjected to external compressive loads. This differential flow causes shear movement between the interlay and the faying surfaces which effects the weld. Joining speeds in excess of 10 feet per second are possible, with a reduction in sheet thickness of about 5 percent.Type: GrantFiled: March 24, 1975Date of Patent: February 10, 1976Assignee: Continental Can Company, Inc.Inventor: Walter Sawert
