Patent number: 3963857Abstract: A terminal for connecting a fine magnet wire to a larger wire with relatively thick insulation. The terminal has a barrel at one end section thereof with serrations extending substantially circumferentially around the inner surface thereof. At the other end of said terminal there is a second barrel with tangs extending inwardly therein. The fine magnet wire is laid within the end of the barrel containing the serrations. The large wire with the heavy insulation is laid within both sections of said barrel including the portion containing the tangs and the portion containing the serrations. Crimping of both barrels in the terminal causes the heavy insulation on the large wire to force the magnet wire into the barrel serrations, thereby elongating the magnet wire and breaking the shellac or fine plastic insulation thereon so that the magnet wire makes electrical contact with the barrel.Type: GrantFiled: September 12, 1974Date of Patent: June 15, 1976Assignee: AMP IncorporatedInventors: Charles Edward Reynolds, Charles Harry Weidler

Patent number: 3955877Abstract: A low profile contact, stamped or cut from a section of flat stock material, for receiving a male pin for connection to a lead of a printed circuit board, includes a cylindrically shaped pin receiving portion for insertion into a hole in the printed circuit board conterminous with the lead. A plurality of tabs extend upwardly from the top of the cylinder, and a pair of opposite tabs are bent intermediate their ends to partially extend into the cylinder to engage the inserted pin. The tabs are flared outwardly from the top of the cylinder to provide a guide to assist insertion of the pin into the cylinder and to provide a seat upon which the contact seats upon the surface of the circuit board. The cylinder is formed with a gap or space parallel to its axis to enable it to be radially compressed upon insertion into the hole of the printed circuit board to urge or bear outwardly upon the walls of the hole to establish firm physical and electrical contact therewith.Type: GrantFiled: June 23, 1975Date of Patent: May 11, 1976Assignee: AMP IncorporatedInventors: Robert Franklin Cobaugh, James Ray Coller

Patent number: 3953096Abstract: A free standing all metal contact, which, when mounted on a first board with other similar contacts, all in a straight line, will mechanically receive and hold, and make electrical contact with a second circuit board. Each contact has U-shaped configuration with the two legs of the U having a width which is normal to the plane of the U. The edges of each of the two legs are bent back in a direction away from the other leg to form an I beam type cross-sectional configuration to provide structural strength. Two of the bent back edges which are diagonally positioned are extended beyond the closed end of the U to form a pair of posts which fit into mating holes in the first circuit board to securely mount the contact thereon. The free end of one of the legs is bent downwardly into the U and towards the other leg to provide a spring-like gripping effect upon the edge of the second board when it is inserted into said U.Type: GrantFiled: August 6, 1975Date of Patent: April 27, 1976Assignee: AMP IncorporatedInventor: Benjamin Charles Williams

Patent number: 3943487Abstract: A logic detect circuit chip is mounted on a substrate having a plurality of first conductors on one surface connected to first inputs of respective bit-gates of the logic circuit, and a plurality of further conductors on the same surface connected to the other inputs of respective bit-gates. The further conductors are traversed by at least one bus conductor on the other surface of the substrate. The further conductors are selectively connectible to each bus conductor by conductive slugs at the crossing points. The bus conductor and the first conductors are connectible respectively to a 0 volt reference line and a parallel binary transmission line. By appropriate selection of the slug connections between further conductors and the bus line the detect circuit may be associated with a particular binary number on the transmission line. Two bus lines may be used, connected respectively to 0 volts and a different voltage reference.Type: GrantFiled: March 27, 1974Date of Patent: March 9, 1976Assignee: AMP IncorporatedInventor: Arthur Richard Pottle

Patent number: 3939552Abstract: A method and apparatus for feeding a pair of wires in which the length of the fed wires may be varied relative to each other and also in which accurate positioning of the wires at the receiving station is accomplished. At the start of a cycle of operation the leading end portions of a pair of supply wires are engaged by wire clamp means immediately adjacent a wire support. The wire clamp means is then moved to an extended position to feed the leading end portions away from the wire support, and as the wire clamp means is being moved to its extended position a bight is formed in one of the wires to vary its length relative to the other wire. A trailing portion of the pair of wires is now cut and the insulation is stripped from the trailing end portions of the cut wires as well as the new leading end portions of the pair of supply wires.Type: GrantFiled: November 26, 1974Date of Patent: February 24, 1976Assignee: AMP IncorporatedInventors: Granville Spencer Hart, Joseph Edward Brandewie

Patent number: 3937403Abstract: A terminal capable of being secured to a flat wire to make electrical contact with the conductor in the wire. The terminal is secured to the wire by pressing the wire between adjacent parts of the terminal so that electrically conductive barbs on the terminal pierce the insulation on the wire to contact the conductor.A pair of terminals capable of being secured to a flat wire having two spaced conductors so that each terminal in the pair makes electrical contact with one of the conductors in the wire. The terminals are coupled to each other by a weakened portion. While coupled, the terminals define a generally U-shaped member so that the wire can be confined between the legs of the U while it is being secured to each of the terminals. The terminals are secured to the wire by pressing it between adjacent parts of each terminal so that electrically conductive barbs on each terminal pierce the insulation on the wire to contact their respective conductors.Type: GrantFiled: June 3, 1974Date of Patent: February 10, 1976Assignee: AMP IncorporatedInventor: Gustaf Rudolph Lawson

Patent number: 3934959Abstract: A matrix connector comprises an elastomer body presenting a pair of opposite contact surfaces at each of which is disposed a multiplicity of spaced contacts, the contacts of the opposite faces being interconnected by conductors extending through the body, the contacts are defined by folds of the conductors extending through the elastomeric mass, convex portions of the folds being exposed at the opposite faces. Suitably such a connector is made forming the conductive strips on opposite faces of a flexible printed circuit, and interconnected at overlapping portions through holes in the flexible lamina. The lamina is folded in concertina form with adjacent limbs spaced by strips of partially cured elastomer. The assembly is then compressed and cured.Type: GrantFiled: July 22, 1974Date of Patent: January 27, 1976Assignee: AMP IncorporatedInventor: Hermanus Petrus Johannes Gilissen
