Abstract: Solid gas-drying forms are made by heating drying salts with a polar solvent to form a saturated solution, then cooling, freezing and forming. Preferred salts are combinations of calcium and lithium bromides and chlorides in particularly effective molar ratios.
Abstract: A fire hose manipulator comprises an elongated lever rod, a hose contacting element, and an adjustable pivot for connecting the hose contacting element to the lever rod.
Abstract: A starter bar is designed for beam blank production by continuous casters. The starter bar has a unique transition section including H-profiled segment members which are fixed to an elongated flexible steel band forming the core of the unit. The transition section is readily connected and disconnected to a universal tail section, also having an elongated flexible steel band as its core.

Abstract: Apparatus for drying flowing gas includes a generally cylindrical vessel having a gas inlet and a gas outlet, two perforated plates of different metals in contact with each other transverse the interior of the vessel, and a third perforated plate downstream from the two mutually contacting plates.

Abstract: This invention relates to improved hydrocarbon gels which find use in the fracturing of petroleum producing formations. In particular it relates to the use of a defined class of gelling agents for hydrocarbons which provide excellent results in such fracturing. The gelling agents comprise combinations of selected orthophosphate esters and ferric ammonium citrate or lower alkyl amine derivative thereof. The lower alkyl amine derivatives are referred to as ferric alkylamine citrates.
Abstract: New N-substituted piperidines useful as light stabilizers in synthetic resins are disclosed. They are 1-(2,7-octadienyl)-2,2,6,6-tetraalkylpiperidines wherein the alkyl groups are independently selected lower alkyl groups such as methyl or ethyl and the 3 and 5 positions may be substituted by methyls. The ring may be monounsaturated; a new compound 1-(2,7-octadienyl)-2, 2,6,6-tetramethyl-3-pyridine is described.
Abstract: A child-protected thermoplastic container having a generally square shape including a closure having horizontal sealing surfaces complimentary to sealing surfaces on the top of parallel container sides, and including tapered guide surfaces on the parallel sides to guide the closure from back to front for closing while forcing a tight seal on the sealing surfaces. A flared wedge on a flexible projecting nub protrudes from the closure through an aperture in a rib of the container body, preventing backward movement of the closure unless the wedge is depressed. The front of the closure is provided with a lock bar having a handle which snaps closed to effectuate a tight seal on the front, which must be opened before the closure will slide back to open the container.
Abstract: A method for preparing iron bearing green pellets that can be processed in a rotary hearth furnace without degradation and become self-fluxing sponge iron pellets when charged to a submerged arc furnace operating at a lower temperature than the rotary hearth furnace, to produce hot metal having a carbon content from 1% to about 5%.
Abstract: Ingress of gas such as air through the joint of a pour tube and tube holder of a continuous caster is prevented or inhibited by passing an inert gas into a circumferential channel around the orifice and at the interface of the joint; the gas is evenly distributed within the channel over the entire configuration of a porous refractory insert in the circumferential channel; the porous refractory insert assures even distribution of the gas to the desired location in the joint.
Abstract: In the continuous casting of steel, gas is prevented or inhibited from contacting molten steel through the valve slide plate by feeding inert gas through channels in the slide plate and adjacent parts; the channels contain porous refractory inserts and can be connected to outside sources through juxtaposed side channels.
Abstract: In "laminated object manufacturing" in which a prototype of an object is constructed by layering pieces of paper which are individually cut by a laser beam controlled by a 3-D computer design, method and apparatus are disclosed for severing the completed "build" from its base by a wire which is constricted to cut through a low-density layer between the base and the build.
Abstract: This invention relates to improved hydrocarbon gels which find use in the fracturing of petroleum producing formations. In particular it relates to the use of a define class of gelling agents for hydrocarbons which provide excellent results in such fracturing. The gelling agents comprise combinations of (1) selected orthophosphate esters and (2) a composition comprising a source of ferric ions, an amine, and a polycarboxylic acid or salt thereof.
Abstract: This invention relates to improved hydrocarbon gels finding use in the fracturing of formations which produce petroleum and other hydrocarbons. The gelling agents comprise combinations of ferric salts, selected orthophosphate esters, a low molecular weight amine such as triethonolamine or triethylamine, and a surfactant.
Abstract: Swelling and migration of subterranean clay is inhibited during drilling for and stimulation of the production of hydrocarbon fluids, and preparation therefor, by treating said formations with a copolymer of about 5% to about 50% of an anionic monomer such as acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, or 2-acrylamido-2-methyl propane sulfonic acid and the balance a cationic monomer selected from dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride, or acryloxy or methacryloxy ethyl, propyl or 3-methyl butyl trimethyl ammonium chlorides or methosulfates. Permeability damage to the formation is reduced in the presence of the copolymer; it is particularly effective in spite of the presence of a foaming agent.
Abstract: In the removal of particulates from a wellbore, such as in air drilling for hydrocarbon recovery, a mixture of an amphoteric foaming agent and, typically, an anionic surfactant is employed. An aqueous solution thereof having a pH of at least 9.5 is used to generate a foam for removing the particulates; then the foam is collapsed by the introduction of acid to reduce the pH below about 4, the particles are removed mechanically, the pH is restored to greater than 9.5, and the foaming solution is returned to the wellbore. The solution may be used several times; partial losses of foaming agent in the process may be easily replenished with each cycle. Cationic surfactants may be used instead of anionic, with foaming and foam collapse being controlled at opposite pH's. Savings are realized in water, drilling chemicals, and settling pits and the like for removing particulates from the foam.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a new method of making the dimethacrylate ester of alkoxylated bisphenol-A via transesterification with methyl methacrylate. This transesterification reaction proceeds at low temperatures and is driven by the removal of methanol as a methanol/saturated hydrocarbon azeotrope. The lower temperature reaction advantageously inhibits polyerization of the feed ester. The reaction is catalyzed by potassium based catalysts.
