Abstract: A zig zag sewing machine, wherein a needle bar having a basting position beyond its zig zagging range, is provided with a presser foot having therein an elongate opening which is defined to permit one needle of a twin needle device to pass therethrough without striking the foot upon descent of the needle bar of the machine from a basting position, and which has a beveled edge to interfere at one end of the opening with the other needle and deflect such other needle so that it can pass through the opening.
Abstract: A button attaching device is provided with a bifurcated needle holding member which can be utilized to adjust the spacing between a pair of needles, and with a needle cover which attaches to the bifurcated member to protect one from injury by the needles and form a unit that can be conveniently carried on the person of a user.
Abstract: A fabric repairing assembly is provided with an impact cutter which is operable by a plunger that is slidably mounted in an embracing housing. The assembly is further provided with a heater which includes a sleeve that slidably receives the said housing and wherein the housing can be moved to cause the plunger to press the heater against cloth undergoing repair.
Abstract: A thread handling system for a sewing machine is provided with elongate thread holding members formed for frictional contact of both members with thread during movement of the thread in the holder free of a takeup, and both formed and placed to cause thread in the thread holder to be pulled by the takeup away from one of the members and frictional drag on the thread holder reduced during movement of the takeup in the stitch setting direction.
Abstract: A sewing machine motor is provided with stamped out sheet metal end brackets including arms with disc like end portions which are mounted for pivotal movement in slots in a frame to permit the motor to be adjusted as required to alter tension in a belt driven by the motor.
Abstract: A sewing machine is provided with a thread handling device having a thread holding and a thread metering function. The device includes a pair of parallel elongate members, and a length of easily compressible resilient material which is carried by one of the members and compressed against the other member. Needle thread extending between the resilient material and said other member is subjected to frictional resistance by the resilient material during movement in the device.
Abstract: A bobbin resting on a bobbin case in the vertical axis looptaker of a sewing machine is provided with a slidable plunger which is biased into a position wherein the bobbin is disconnected from the looptaker and can rotate relative thereto. The plunger is depressable to a cam on the plate into a position wherein it is effective to cause the bobbin to be rotated with the looptaker for the winding of thread.
Abstract: A sewing machine is provided with a hinging system which supports information bearing plates and a cover therefor. The plates are confined and concealed in a recess in the machine when the cover is closed and can pivot between positions in the recess and positions opposite the rear side of the cover when the cover is open.
Abstract: A button attaching tool is provided with a base, a pair of needles which have collapsible and expandable thread receiving eyes and which project from the base for use in penetrating a layer of material and the holes of a button to be attached to the material, and a member for stripping the material and button from the needles.
Abstract: A skip stitch sewing machine is provided with adjustable means engageable with a camming surface on a needle bar for deflecting the needle bar when it is caused to descend while in an extreme lateral skip stitch position, and for thereby preventing a needle affixed to the lower end of the needle bar from striking a presser foot or throat plate.
Abstract: A sewing machine is provided with stitch length control mechanism including a gear rack which is slidably mounted in the base of the machine so that it can be linearly translated to selected positions by an operator, and including a helical gear sector which is operably associated with a feed regulator shaft and meshes with the gear rack at a low helix angle effective to prevent other than operator induced movements of the gear rack.
Abstract: A bobbin thread tensioning device on a bobbin case is provided with a pair of bobbin thread accepting members, one of which is biased toward the other by an adjustable spring. The thread accepting members are disposed relative to each other and with respect to a rotatable hook to assure seizure of the bobbin thread by the hook beak.
Abstract: The sides of a heat exchanger unit are joined with perimeter flanges which are folded one over the other and then crimped tightly in such fashion as to cause adjacent portions of the perimeter to extend at different angles in different planes resulting in a scissor action therebetween effective to securely clamp the heat exchanger sides together and form a leak-proof chamber.
Abstract: An input gear and a hook driving gear in mesh with the input gear in the gear train for the hook of a sewing machine are rendered self-adjusting by having the input gear drive the hook driving gear through a key which is movable in one direction on an input shaft and with respect to which the input gear is movable in a direction perpendicular to said one direction, and by having the hook driving gear drive the hook through shaft affixed collar permitting movement of the hook driving gear transversely relative to a bushing upon which such gear is rotatably mounted.
Abstract: A chainstitch thread guide is formed with a thread guiding trough which extends into a channel on one side of a partitioning wall in a sewing machine to receive needle thread extending upwardly from a tensioning device to a take-up lever and further receives such needle thread extending downwardly from the take-up lever on the way to a sewing needle.
Abstract: A button attaching hand tool is provided with a box-like structure which includes a fixed and adjustable needle, and which includes a button storage compartment. A slidable shroud on the box-like structure for extricating a button and material from the needles is movable between a position in which an operator is shielded from injury by the needles and another position in which the needles are exposed for button sewing use.
Abstract: A lockstitch sewing machine is provided with a rotatable loop and bobbin case assembly providing for limited contact between the loop taker and bobbin case, and including a bracket which is affixed to the bed of the machine and is connected with the bobbin case at substantially diametrically opposite locations thereon to constrain the bobbin case angularly and rotationally but permit needle thread to be moved by the loop taker between the bobbin case and bracket during the formation of lockstitches.
Abstract: A Hall effect sensor is disposed between two magnets having their fields in quadrature and in association with a movable specially formed ferromagnetic part which is used to control flux in the sensor in such a way as to cause the sensor to produce a linearly varying output voltage dependent upon the position of the part.
Abstract: Work trimmer mechanism is provided for a sewing machine in a module including a frame securable on the machine, a split eccentric securable on the arm shaft, a split bearing securable about the eccentric, a link reciprocable by the bearing during rotation of the arm shaft, linkage means mounted on the frame and actuable by the linkage means, and a trimmer knife carrier operable by the linkage means.
