    Abstract: Gas journal bearing systems are provided. An exemplary gas journal bearing system comprises a vortex generator, a housing and a journal. The vortex generator is operative to receive a flow of gas and to impart an angular acceleration to the gas. The housing is in fluid communication with the vortex generator, with housing having a first exhaust through which the gas is exhausted. The journal is supported within the housing by a vortex of the gas as the gas swirls along at least a portion of a length of the journal. Methods and other systems also are provided.

A preferred embodiment device comprises a non-conductive polymer deposited on the electrode to form a matrix material having a plurality of pores; a capture biomolecule immobilized on the electrode such that the binding of the target analyte to the capture biomolecule effectively blocks a sufficient number of pores in the matrix material to produce a measurable decrease in the rate of a redox reaction occurring at the electrode; a current source for driving a redox reaction at the electrode; a redox species in contact with the electrode; and a detector element operatively connected to the electrode to detect the measureable decrease of a change in the rate of a redox reaction occurring due to the blockage of pores in the matrix material by the target analyte.

    Abstract: A composition is provided as a salt having the formula MBF3X where M is an alkali metal cation and X is the halide fluoride, bromide or iodide. A lithium salt has several characteristics making the composition well suited for inclusion within a lithium-ion battery. A process for forming an alkali metal trifluorohaloborate salt includes the preparation of a boron trifluoride etherate in an organic solvent. An alkali metal halide salt where the halide is chloride, bromide or iodide is suspended in the solution and reacted with boron trifluoride etherate to form an alkali metal trifluorohaloborate. The alkali metal trifluorohaloborate so produced is collected as a solid from the solution. The process is simple and yields alkali metal trifluorohaloborate of sufficient purity to be used directly in battery applications.

A transmitter receives a processing signal from the processing device according to the first controller signal.     Abstract: An elastomer composition includes a polymer system made up of a majority of HNBR polymer and an optional polymer additive such as carboxylated nitrile, ethylene-propylene-diene rubber, isoprene rubber, chloroprene rubber, acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber, butyl rubber, isoprene rubber, natural rubber and hydrogenated carboxylated butadiene acrylonitrile terpolymer, and combinations thereof. The polymer system totals 100 parts by weight. A cure system for the elastomer composition includes 1.5 to 30 parts by weight of zinc, magnesium or calcium oxide, 15 to 50 parts by weight of an ?,?-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid and an organoperoxide. Under vulcanization conditions, the elastomer composition cures through the in situ formation of a metal carboxylate. A degradation inhibitor for an elastomer composition that includes an amine and an imidazole along with an optional polymerized quinoline is noted to be particularly effective.

    Abstract: An article and a process are provided for reducing the shear stress on an interface of a structural member in intimate contact with a compressive load. The article is in the form of a wedge that is forcibly placed against the sidewall of one end or both ends of the structural member. The wedge may take the form of a ring that can be placed on the inside or outside surface of a hollow cylindrical structural member. The process of forcibly placing a wedge against the sidewall at one or both ends of the structural member produces a transverse compressive stress upon the sidewall. The transverse compressive stress upon the sidewall attenuates the tendency of said sidewall to deflect when the structural member is subjected to a compressive load. A reduction in the deflection of the sidewall reduces the shear stress generated proximal to the interface of the structural member in intimate contact with a compressive load and increases the structural member load bearing capacity.

The surface is tailored with a plurality of functional groups that self-assemble and are deliverable to the surface of the solution, including interfaces thereof, thereby permitting a high-density assembly of functional groups to operate in concert with one another in order to generate a modified surface thereof. The polymeric material produced thereof can be reversibly adaptable to environmental conditions through a blooming of varying surface functional group to the surface of the solution.

A representative method comprises receiving infrared information corresponding to a degree of polarization of dew in a particular environment, and using the degree of polarization to determine dew presence in the environment. Changes in the degree of polarization can be attributed to changes in the density, size or shadowing of the dew drops. Infrared emissions information can be detected and accumulated over a range of emission angles and over a period of time. The system compares the accumulated data for the particular environment to detect the presence of dew, the rate of growth of the dew and the change in characteristics of dew over a period of time starting from a first time interval. The system also compares the accumulated data with other previous accumulated data from the environment to detect if changes should be made to the environment.
