Publication number: 20140223372Abstract: A method of executing an action related to data input by a user via a personal computing device is disclosed. The method involves receiving first input data via a keyboard, and associating the first input data with a secondary application available to the user via the personal computing device by causing an icon to be displayed on a display device for selection, the icon associated with the secondary application. The method also involves monitoring for user selection of the icon, and, in response to detecting user selection of the icon, activating the secondary application to generate second data contextually associated with the secondary application for display on the display device. Apparatuses and systems are also disclosed.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 30, 2014Publication date: August 7, 2014Applicant: 602531 British Columbia Ltd.Inventors: Mark Dostie, Justin Robert Desjardins

Patent number: 8552984Abstract: In one aspect of the present invention a computer-implemented method is provided of processing input key events associated with user input received from a keyboard-type device, wherein the keyboard-type device selected from at least one of a keyboard and a keypad. In this aspect, input key events associated with a first process active within an operating system are received and monitored for a first predefined input key event associated with user selection of a first key of the keyboard-type device for at least a predetermined time period. In response to identifying the first predefined input key event, the input key events are redirected from the first process to a second process. The input key events are monitored for a second predefined input key event associated with further redirection of the input key events. In response to identifying the second predefined input key event, the input key events are redirected to the first process.Type: GrantFiled: January 13, 2005Date of Patent: October 8, 2013Assignee: 602531 British Columbia Ltd.Inventor: Peter Knaven

Patent number: 7921361Abstract: In one aspect, a method, apparatus, computer-readable medium and system is provided for facilitating user text generation and entry. In some illustrative embodiments, user input received from a digital keyboard and search list is used to retrieve completion candidates likely intended by the user or containing at least a portion of the user's intended text. Completion candidates may be selected using a pointing device (for example, a touch-sensitive screen) with a pointing operation that includes a gesture. A completion candidate may be used to search for more relevant completion candidates.Type: GrantFiled: October 12, 2007Date of Patent: April 5, 2011Assignee: 602531 British Columbia Ltd.Inventors: Harold David Gunn, John Chapman

Publication number: 20110010655Abstract: In one aspect of the present invention a user can rapidly enter and search for data, such as text, using a data entry system by entering one or more characters on a digital keyboard with a pointing device. With the digital keyboard the user can create words, phrases and other character sequences. As the user enters a character sequence, a mechanism for character prediction visually informs the user of which set of characters on the digital keyboard are most likely to have the character that the user wishes to next enter as part of the text. In another aspect of the present invention, as the user forms a character sequence (partial text entry), the character sequence is used to search a dictionary for a set of completion candidates that begin with the character sequence. The data entry system retrieves completion candidates from the dictionary by determining which completion candidates in the dictionary are more likely to be the ones that the user is attempting to type.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 29, 2010Publication date: January 13, 2011Applicant: 602531 British Columbia Ltd.Inventors: Mark Dostie, Harold David Gunn, Jiang Hong, Peter Knaven, William Trueman Davis

Patent number: 7716579Abstract: A method, system and computer-readable media for supporting text entry on a personal computing device by activating automated searching to search for completion candidates which are based on a partial text entry received from a user. The completion candidates are displayed in a search list. The user may select a completion candidate from among the completion candidates in the search list to correspondingly modify the partial text entry, or the user may decline all of the completion candidates displayed in the search list and terminate the automated searching. The system may further provide a digital keyboard for use in entering text.Type: GrantFiled: May 19, 2005Date of Patent: May 11, 2010Assignee: 602531 British Columbia Ltd.Inventors: Harold David Gunn, John Chapman

Patent number: 7681124Abstract: In one aspect, the user can rapidly enter and search for text using a data entry system through a combination of entering one or more characters on a digitally displayed keyboard with a pointing device and using a search list to obtain a list of completion candidates. The user can activate the search list to obtain a list of completion candidates at any time while entering a partial text entry with the data entry system. When the search list is active, a list of completion candidates is displayed on a graphical user interface for the user to select from and the user can perform one of several actions. When the user deactivates the search list, the user can continue adding to or modifying the current partial text entry being entered, and may re-invoke the search list to further search for completion candidates based on the modified partial text entry.Type: GrantFiled: May 19, 2005Date of Patent: March 16, 2010Assignee: 602531 British Columbia Ltd.Inventors: Harold David Gunn, John Chapman
