Patent number: 4694717Abstract: A machine for cutting coarse sod into relatively small plugs for ready packaging and subsequent transplanting, comprising an endless conveyor belt upon which comparatively large rectangular sections of sod can be deposited, so that the sections of sod can be moved intermittently toward a sod cutting device. The sod cutting device preferably is of the single pass cutter type, utilizing a plurality of elongate, closely grouped blades designed to periodically move in unison downwardly into contact with sod to be cut, with such downward cutting movements being immediately followed by an upward movement, thus to permit an advance of the section of sod without interference. I coordinate the movements of the sod cutting device with the belt advance, such that forward movement of a section of sod is in each instance prevented until the cutting blades are clear of the section of sod being cut.Type: GrantFiled: August 5, 1985Date of Patent: September 22, 1987Assignee: A. Duda & Sons, Inc.Inventor: Gordon C. Boots

Patent number: 4503079Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the production of ethyl alcohol from citrus molasses fermentation in which improved yields of ethyl alcohol are obtained by preliminarily removing fermentation inhibiting agents, specifically oils, from the fermenter charge. The process may be carried out in batch or by continuous operation. The alcohol formed in the fermentation step is distilled off at about 190.degree. proof and the latter may then be dehydrated in a molecular sieve column to produce a product substantially free of water. Also a novel oil stripper is presented in order that the oils may be effectively and economically removed prior to fermentation.Type: GrantFiled: December 27, 1982Date of Patent: March 5, 1985Assignee: A. Duda and Sons, Inc.Inventors: Donald W. King, Terrance M. Placzek

Patent number: 4460610Abstract: A plantain impregnated with fruit juice, particularly orange juice, having a unique taste and texture. Plantains are selected with ripeness such that the sugar content is derived from at least 70% conversion of the starch to sugar, peeling the plantains and then apply a high vacuum to the plantains. The plantains are then immersed in a solution of fruit juice. After holding the vacuum for a time, the plantains are held immersed in the fruit juice under superatmospheric pressure for a sufficient dwell time to substantially completely impregnate the plantains which are then removed and frozen. The plantains prior to impregnation are desirably preserved from fungus attack by ripening the plantains in a low humidity of about a maximum of 40% relative humidity and/or contacting the plantains with a fungicide, such as that containing chlorine.Type: GrantFiled: May 25, 1982Date of Patent: July 17, 1984Assignee: A. Duda & Sons, Inc.Inventor: George B. Macfie, Jr.
