  • Patent number: 7818979
Abstract: An ethane recovery process utilizing multiple reflux streams is provided. Feed gas is cooled, partially condensed, and separated into a first liquid stream and a first vapor stream. First liquid stream is expanded and sent to a demethanizer. First vapor stream is split into a first and a second separator vapor streams. First separator vapor stream is expanded and sent to demethanizer. Second separator vapor stream is partially condensed and is separated into a reflux separator liquid stream, which is sent to demethanizer, and a reflux separator vapor stream, which is condensed and sent to demethanizer. Demethanizer produces a tower bottom stream containing a substantial amount of ethane and heavier components, and a tower overhead stream containing a substantial amount of remaining lighter components and forms a residue gas stream. A portion of residue gas stream is cooled, condensed, and sent to the demethanizer tower as top reflux stream.

  • Patent number: 7682501
Abstract: An apparatus and method for processing different feeds in a fluid catalytic cracking unit are disclosed which result in improved yields of C3, C4 and gasoline range hydrocarbons as compared to conventional systems. The process comprises injecting a main hydrocarbon feed into a catalyst-containing riser reactor through a plurality of main feed injectors, and injecting a light hydrocarbon feed into the riser reactor at a location upstream from the main feed injectors and downstream from a control valve such as a regenerated catalyst slide valve, the light feed being injected in a region having a high density of catalyst particles. The light feed is injected in a dispersed way such the amount of feed injected corresponds to the density of catalyst particles at that particular point, with greater amounts of feed being injected at locations having a large number of catalyst particles.

  • Patent number: 7576251
Abstract: A process is disclosed for the preferential conversion to 2-butene of a stream containing C4 compounds including 1-butene and 2-butene. The process involves mixing the C4 stream with a first hydrogen stream to form a feed stream, hydroisomerizing the feed stream in the presence of a first hydroisomerization catalyst in order to convert at least a portion of the 1-butene to 2-butene, thereby producing a hydroisomerization effluent, passing the hydroisomerization effluent through a fractionation column to form a top stream comprising isobutane and isobutylene and a bottoms stream comprising 2-butene, withdrawing a recycle stream from said fractionation column at a location above the feed point at which the weight ratio of 1-butene to 2-butene is high, and combining the recycle stream with at least one of the C4 stream and the feed stream upstream from the hydroisomerization catalyst. A corresponding apparatus also is disclosed.

  • Patent number: 7525007
Abstract: An ethane or other hydrocarbon feedstock is steam cracked to produce an ethylene stream which is processed in an ethylene plant recovery section to separate an ethane recycle and a polymer grade or chemical grade ethylene product stream. A portion of the ethylene product stream may then be reacted by dimerization to produce a butene stream. These formed butenes and/or butenes recovered from other sources and another portion of the ethylene product stream are reacted by metathesis to produce a propylene stream which is deethanized and separated from heavier hydrocarbons to produce the propylene product. The butene product stream may also be deethanized and is separated from heavier hydrocarbons. The overhead from the metathesis section deethanizer may be recycled to the ethylene plant recovery section. The reflux for the metathesis section deethanizer may be generated from the overhead or may be a portion of the ethylene product stream.

  • Publication number: 20080027263
Abstract: A method of operation wherein catalytic reactors which cycle between reaction mode and catalyst regeneration mode have their contents exchanged with each other at the beginning of each cycle in order to increase the yield of the desired product. This exchange increases said yield by minimizing the contact of reactant in reaction mode with regenerant utilized in regeneration mode, thereby reducing/preventing the undesirable alternate reaction between the two, which consumes said reactant making it unavailable for the production of the desired product.

  • Patent number: 7316127
Abstract: A process for the recovery of ethane and heavier hydrocarbon components from a hydrocarbon feed gas stream. Feed gas stream is cooled into a first and second cooled streams. First and second cooled streams are sent to a cold absorber and separated into a first gas stream and a first liquid stream. First gas stream is expanded and sent to a fractionation tower. At least a part of the first liquid stream is sent to a pre-demethanizer stripper tower. Stripper tower produces a stripper overhead stream and a stripper bottoms stream. Stripper overhead vapor stream is cooled and sent to the fractionation tower as second reflux stream. Stripper bottoms stream is supplied to the fractionation tower. Temperatures and pressures of the streams and columns are maintained to recover a major portion of ethane and heavier hydrocarbon components as a bottoms product stream, and produce a residue gas stream at the fractionation tower overhead.

  • Patent number: 7214841
Abstract: In order to maximize the production of propylene when the external supply of ethylene is limited, the C4 cut from a hydrocarbon cracking process is first subjected to autometathesis prior to any isobutylene removal and without any ethylene addition. This favors the reactions which produce propylene and pentenes. The ethylene and propylene produced are then removed leaving a stream of the C4's and heavier components. The C5 and heavier components are then removed leaving a mixture of 1-butene, 2-butene, isobutylene, and iso- and normal butanes. The isobutylene is next removed preferably by a catalytic distillation hydroisomerization de-isobutyleneizer. The isobutylene-free C4 stream is then mixed with the product ethylene removed from the autometathesis product together with any fresh external ethylene needed and subjected to conventional metathesis producing additional propylene.

  • Patent number: 7179427
Abstract: An apparatus for the countercurrent contacting of a gas and downflowing solid particles includes a housing and a plurality of baffles positioned within the housing. The baffles are arranged in at least first and second vertically spaced levels in successively lower position, each of the first and second levels including a row of at least two baffles oriented parallel to one another and inclined from horizontal so as to facilitate movement of the solid particles and provide the maximum area for flow. Baffles are oriented so as to laterally shift the direction of downflowing particles transversely as the particles move from one level to the next lower level and avoid channeling of the phases. The number of baffles, length and spacing is optimized to provide maximum interfacial area for interaction between the phases.
