Patent number: 9347399Abstract: A laser beam is utilized to ignite the fuel and oxidizer injected into a combustion chamber. An injector has a plurality of injector elements each injecting fuel and oxidizer into a flame holding zone adjacent the injector face plate where fuel and oxidizer are mixing at a rate to sustain flammability. The laser beam is introduced parallel to the injector face plate passing through the fuel and oxidizer mixing zones igniting the propellants. The propellants are ignited by having a laser beam tuned to a frequency to excite the oxidizer such that it will chemically combine with the fuel to form an ignition kernel in the flame holding zone. When a plurality of injector elements are ignited in this manner a controlled ignition process in the combustion chamber is achieved.Type: GrantFiled: December 10, 1997Date of Patent: May 24, 2016Assignee: AEROJET ROCKETDYNE OF DE, INC.Inventors: William S. Patent number: 9194335Abstract: An exit manifold is disclosed which includes a manifold body that includes a plurality of inlets. The manifold body provides communication between the inlets and a discharge port. At least one of the inlets directs flow in a first direction and at least one of the inlets directs flow in a second direction. The first and second directions are opposite and the material flowing in these opposite directions collides in front of the discharge outlet. The collision of these two oppositely-directed flows creates a high pressure stagnation region that may block or impede flow from one or more inlets that may be in alignment with the discharge port.Type: GrantFiled: March 9, 2012Date of Patent: November 24, 2015Assignee: AEROJET ROCKETDYNE OF DE, INC.Inventors: James A. Patent number: 9149870Abstract: A disclosed additive manufacturing machine includes a fixed platform defining a work surface for supporting fabrication of a part and a housing defining a chamber over the work surface. A material applicator is supported on the housing for depositing material onto the work surface. An energy directing device is also supported on the housing and directs energy within the chamber to form a part. The housing is movable relative to the work surface therefore moves the energy producing device relative to the work surface to maintain a distance between the energy directing device and a surface of the part during fabrication.Type: GrantFiled: September 14, 2012Date of Patent: October 6, 2015Assignee: AEROJET ROCKETDYNE OF DE, INC.Inventor: Alan B. Patent number: 8992149Abstract: Anti-rotation keys are typically used in applications where an end of a threaded stud is received in a housing, and where the opposite end of the stud projects from the housing to allow attachment of another component to the housing. Once partially received in the housing, further rotation of the stud is prevented by an anti-rotation key. The disclosed anti-rotation key is self-retaining, in that it prevents itself from “backing out” of the channel due to vibration or thermal expansion of the housing, etc., while also being removable from the channel if desired.Type: GrantFiled: September 1, 2011Date of Patent: March 31, 2015Assignee: Aerojet Rocketdyne of DE, Inc.Inventor: Alan Benjamin Christopher Dixon
