  • Patent number: 4375760
Abstract: An anvil for a blind riveting tool comprises an annular disc 23 of resilient nylon-6 material received in a counterbore in the front of a rigid backing or mount 25. When the tool is used to place a blind rivet, the nylon disc contacts the rivet shell head to support it against the pull of the mandrel. The disc is flexible enough to conform to the shape of the rivet head, thus maximizing the contact area and minimizing the contact thrust, and is soft enough not to damage or mark the rivet head surface, which may, for example, be painted.

  • Patent number: 4368838
Abstract: In a blind riveting machine, in which a mandrel having a head is pulled downwardly by reciprocable and openable pulling jaws to draw the mandrel head through the bore of a tubular rivet supported at a setting station by normally closed, openable nose jaws, the nose jaws have yieldable detent means for resisting upward movement of the mandrel, and a reciprocable tube concentric with the mandrel for lifting further rivets along the mandrel, past the opened pulling jaws and nose jaws, to the setting station, has a spring detent which becomes frictionally engaged with the mandrel whereby the mandrel after being lifted with the rivets can be pulled downwardly again so that its head abuts the rivet at the setting station, thereby accurately adjusting the position of the mandrel relative to the pulling jaws, before the pulling jaws again grip the mandrel, in dependence upon the actual size of the rivet next to be set.

  • Patent number: 4367994
Abstract: A blind bolt is of the type comprising a tubular shell 14 through which extends a stem 13 with an enlarged head 12 at one end which, in installation of the bolt, is pulled into the shell 14 to expand it and form a blind head. The stem 11 is provided with two opposed deformations 19 to prevent the shell falling off the stem before installation. Each deformation has a relatively shallow sloping profile with its higher end towards the shell, and the width of the deformation is a maximum at the bottom end of the slope and a minimum at its higher end. The deformations are formed by pinching up portions of the stem between two opposed dies, the shape of the bite between the dies being tapered in the direction along the stem.

  • Patent number: 4365495
Abstract: A mandrel for a blind rivet is made by first forming a mandrel blank from wire stock in a series of cold heading operations which include forming an enlarged head at one end of an elongate stem, and then scraping material from the peripheral surface of part of the head adjacent to the stem and moving the material in a direction away from the stem so as to leave a core and to form a circumferential flange-like boss from the scraped material. The mandrel blank thus produced is then subjected to a rolling operation in which the mandrel blank is rolled between contoured mandrel-rolling dies and thereby formed into a finished mandrel.

  • Patent number: 4355934
Abstract: A self-plugging blind rivet (10) embodies lockingly interengageable members in the form of a headed tubular rivet body (12) with a bore (20) which reduces in diameter towards the head (18), and a mandrel (14) for setting the rivet. The mandrel (14) has a break-off stem (60) and a plug portion (62) which is left in the bore (20) of the rivet body (12) after setting the rivet. The plug portion (62) engages the end of the body (12) remote from the head (18) and has radially projecting longitudinal splines (102) which form grooves in the body (12) when pulled into the reduced diameter region (26) of its bore, and has a cylindrical swaging portion (84) which swages material of the body into parts of the grooves along which the splines (102) have passed so as to lock the plug (62) in the bore (20) and prevent its retraction from the set rivet.

  • Patent number: 4233878
Abstract: A barb for engagement with a body 13 of deformable material such as nylon has a sharp edge 28 at the top of a relatively steep face 29 forming one side of a trough 32. A ledge or rim 38 projects from the face 29, about halfway up the face 29, and provides an abutment which restricts the extent to which the deformable material can enter the trough. This improves the resistance of the barb against being pulled out of the trough. This form of barb is particularly applicable to fasteners of the type in which a threadless bolt having barbs is embedded in a shell carrying a nylon sleeve. The barb is manufactured by a rolling process in which two dies are successively applied to a cylindrical blank, the first die to form the trough 32, and the second die to form the ledge 38.

  • Patent number: 4046053
Abstract: A blind rivet for fastening apertured sheets comprises a tubular shell having a head at one end, and a mandrel having an enlarged head which when pulled into the bore of the shell deforms the shell to produce a blind head. The mandrel has a breaker groove at which it breaks when the rivet is fully placed, leaving the mandrel head plugging the shell. The mandrel head has an integral peripheral skirt which can be deformed outwardly by a tool used for placing the rivet, so that the skirt engages the shell and prevents the mandrel head from being pushed out of the bore of the shell. The mandrel head is adapted to wiredraw after the blind head has been formed so that the mandrel will break substantially flush with the head of the shell when fastening either thick or thin sheets.
