    Abstract: Rapid plasma nitriding is achieved by harnessing the power and increased density of plasma discharges created by hollow cathodes. When opposing surfaces are maintained at the proper voltage, sub atmospheric pressure, and spacing, a phenomenon known as the hollow cathode effect creates additional hot oscillating electrons capable of multiple ionization events thereby increasing the number of ions and electrons per unit volume (plasma density). The present invention describes the harnessing of this phenomenon to rapidly plasma nitride metal surfaces and optionally rapidly deposit functional coatings in a continuous operation for duplex coatings.

    Abstract: Breather valves featuring magnets that allow very rapid flow. Such flow is accomplished by a valve housing enclosing a hollow interior portion containing a stationary member including a magnet and a pressure-movable poppet disposed in sealing arrangement with the housing and including a magnet. Additionally, and a return force member, such as a magnet or spring, between and coupled to the cover of the housing and the pressure movable poppet may be incorporated into the breather valve. The magnets are substantially centrally disposed in relation to the stationary member and pressure-moveable poppet and are configured such that the breather valve stays closed until an air pressure overcomes an attraction force between the magnets, thereby opening the valve.

The skirt deformation sensors include a spring or other elongated deformable member that extends generally parallel and proximate to the portion of the skirt being sensed. A sensor detects that the elongated member has been laterally displaced from its usual longitudinal axis and generates an electrical signal. In response to such electrical signal, the lift device stops further movement of the lift car.

    Abstract: A height control mechanism for a lift device includes an elongated rail and an actuator slidingly mounted thereto. The actuator is biased toward a first end of the rail, and a proximity sensor is mounted proximate the second end of the rail. A cable pulls the actuator toward the second end of the rail as the lift device is elevated. When the proximity sensor detects the presence of the actuator, a signal is generated to halt further elevation. The position of the proximity sensor along the rail can be adjusted to set the maximum height of the lift device. A second proximity sensor, responsive to the presence of the actuator, can also be secured to the rail to generate a signal indicating that the lift device has been elevated off of the ground by a short distance.

    Abstract: A system for supporting loads includes a track having uniformly spaced apertures separated by necks. A bracket is mounted on the track and has two groups of studs which are positioned in the necks and prevent the bracket from pulling away from the track. Neighboring studs in both groups have identical center-to-center spacings. Two plugs pass through holes in the bracket and into respective ones of the apertures. The plugs fix the bracket against movement relative to the track longitudinally and transversely of the latter. The distance between a plug hole and any stud equals one-half the center-to-center spacing of neighboring studs of a group or an integral multiple of one-half such spacing. A locking member passes through an additional hole in the bracket and frictionally engages the track to prevent the plugs from pulling out of the respective apertures during an impact.

    Abstract: A mobile lifting device includes a car having a gate and a docking plate mechanically interconnected at one end of the car. A low voltage DC control system includes an “up” circuit, a “down” circuit connected in parallel with the up circuit, and a sensor circuit in series with the up circuit and down circuit. The sensor circuit includes a plurality of series connected switches for automatically preventing operation of the lifting device if predetermined conditions are not met. The “up” circuit includes a switch positioned on a stage and connected to the control circuit by a coiled cable. A wand on the switch engages a knob on the side of the car when the car reaches the level of the stage, actuating the switch to stop the car. In the event of a power failure, a battery supplies power for opening a solenoid valve to lower the car. Three control panels are provided, one at each end of the car and one in the middle of the car.

    Abstract: An article for securing a load on a pallet includes two reusable straps. A hook is mounted at one end of each strap and is designed to be hooked around the runner of a pallet. The article further includes a quick-release mechanism for connecting the straps to one another. The mechanism comprises a buckle, and a yoke pivotally mounted at one end of the buckle. One of the straps is anchored to the yoke at the end of the strap remote from the respective hook. This strap may be anchored to the yoke permanently or by way of a quick-disconnect device. The buckle and the yoke have a relative position in which the second strap can be threaded into the buckle and then pulled to tighten the straps around a load. Relative pivotal movement of the buckle and the yoke to a second relative position locks the second strap to maintain tension in the straps.
